The wife is due in May and we haven't found a name yet. This will be number nine. We are doing our best to repopulate the republican party and provide bodies for LDS spirits.

Number eight was a beautiful baby boy that we named Porter Rockwell. When his name was announced in our local sacrament meeting we heard by report that there was an audible gasp from the congregation.

We are looking for a name this new baby that will rival the last.

We stopped getting ultrasounds for the baby's sex long ago because there are just too few surprises in life. So we need names for both female and male.

If it is a boy: Reverend Biggey Ju Ju.

If it is a girl: Despereaux El.

I am curious to know why you named your other son after a notorious murderer. Do you not like your son? Was "The Boston Strangler" already taken?

I know parents like to think their child's name makes them unique, but tis not like George Forman's boys are all clones. I have a common first name and I've never felt it has somehow made me not unique. Also, it almost sounds like you want to pick your new child's name for the shock value it would bring the congregation, and I can't help but think that's a poor idea.

Personally I'm a fan of biblical names or picking names from the family. Though once you have enough kids the pickings can be a bit slim. But I'm named after my father (middle name) and my grandfather (his name is my first) and they're both biblical. So that may very well be where my bias is coming from. ;) Also I think studies have shown that stereotypical white names provide an advantage in the work force (in the US), so it's something to consider.

Or push come to shove since you've already used Porter Rockwell, I suggest J. Golden and teach him to use mild profanity. :D

But I was only laughing at part of it. I didn't want anyone to take offense and think I was laughing at all of it. Geez louise..I know what I'm doing. :)

Couple quotes:

It is said that Porter once told a crowd listening to United States Vice President Schuyler Colfax in 1869, "I never killed anyone who didn't need killing."

Rockwell was accused of attempting the assassination of Lilburn Boggs, the former governor of Missouri, who signed executive order on October 27, 1838 known as the "Extermination Order 44" evicting Mormons from Missouri. The order was governor's response to the 1838 Mormon War and to what Boggs termed "open and avowed defiance of the laws, and of having made war upon the people of this State... the Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State if necessary for the public peace—their outrages are beyond all description." The order was not formally rescinded until 1976.

A grand jury was unable to find sufficient evidence to indict him, convinced in part by his reputation as a deadly gunman and his statement that he "never shot at anybody, if I shoot they get shot!... He's still alive, ain't he?"

JOSEPH SMITH

There is a numerous host of faithful souls, whose names I could wish to record in the Book of the Law of the Lord; but time and chance would fail. I will mention, therefore, only a few of them as emblematical of those who are too numerous to be written. But there is one man I would mention, namely Orrin Porter Rockwell, who is now a fellow-wanderer with myself, an exile from his home, because of the murderous deeds, and infernal, fiendish dispositions of the indefatigable and unrelenting hand of the Missourians. He is an innocent and a noble boy. May God Almighty deliver him from the hands of his pursuers. He was an innocent and a noble child and my soul loves him. Let this be recorded for ever and ever. Let the blessings of salvation and honor be his portion. [History of the Church, Vol.5, ch.6, p.125]

I want him to always remember to be an ardent defender of the faith and truth. And to be found innocent before the Lord's anointed. To be someone that you could trust with your life.

I'd call that high praise.

Congratulations! I really like Porter. What are the other 7 named? ;) The names have to "go together" for me.

For another boy, how about...Anderson, Bennett, Sawyer? Girls, hmm...Adelaide, Caroline, Charlotte?

Colin

Jacob

Hannah

Daniel

Seth

Nikolas

Brooke

Porter Rockwell

The wife likes Caroline, thanks

I beg you - nothing like Jayleigh, Mykynzy, Kailey, Addisyn, etc. I keep seeing those horrible names around Utah and they just make me cringe.

Same here.

Mahonri Moriancumer is my favorite prophet but I can't do that to a child.

The other boys in the family want to name the new one Jared, so they can all refer to themselves as the brother of Jared. But that doesn't seem right either...

That doesn't really speak to the issue. How do you justify naming your child after a murderer?

I know it's fashionable to name your kid something "cool" like Moon Unit (Zappa) or name them after some nefarious reprobate like Che Guevara but it doesn't do the kid any favors and is more a measure of the parents immaturity and selfishness.

Adrian seems like a good name for a girl or a detective. Hiram works for both Mormons and Amish.

How about a good Utah place name like Santaquin or Blanding? Golden is another Utah boys name, but how about Silvren? It could also be an Elvish name.

My niece has a pretty different name: Eiley (pronounced i-lee)

Personally it is not one of favorite but a lot of people like. Since I live in the Carolinas there are a ton of Carolines so I am kinda jaded on that name. I think it would be cool to let the other children pick the new babies name.

Landon, Logan, Evan, Joshua, Jared, Ryan, Thomas, Hannah, Henry, Sarah, Allison just a few more common names

What does that have to do with naming someone after a murderer?

It's a legitimate question. I'd like to hear your reasoning.

Do you think that murder is acceptable?

Do you think that Joseph Smith's appreciation for him made his murdering desirable?

Do you think that murderers are role models?

Is there a reason I can't fathom that you want to link your child with immorality?

Something else?
