alexamasan Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 I'm a new member here and I am looking for a good source where I can learn about what LDS beliefs and why. Sometimes people refer me to certain web pages and other times they refer to youtube videos of people explaining just that. Google searches have given me some basics of what, though I do hope some of you can send me to some place that also goes a little more in depth. Thanks Quote
skippy740 Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 We can go just as "in depth" as you want right here. Ask away. Quote
pam Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 As always we also recommend mormon.org Quote
NeuroTypical Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 A good book on our basic beliefs would be the Gospel Principles manual. We teach a Sunday School class out of this manual to any investigators or new members who wish to attend.Chapter 1 Our Heavenly FatherChapter 2 Our Heavenly FamilyChapter 3 Jesus Christ, Our Chosen Leader and SaviorChapter 4 Freedom to ChooseChapter 5 The CreationChapter 6 The Fall of Adam and EveChapter 7 The Holy GhostChapter 8 Praying to Our Heavenly FatherChapter 9 Prophets of GodChapter 10 ScripturesChapter 11 The Life of ChristChapter 12 The AtonementChapter 13 The PriesthoodChapter 14 Priesthood OrganizationChapter 15 The Lord’s Covenant PeopleChapter 16 The Church of Jesus Christ in Former TimesChapter 17 The Church of Jesus Christ TodayChapter 18 Faith in Jesus ChristChapter 19 RepentanceChapter 20 BaptismChapter 21 The Gift of the Holy GhostChapter 22 The Gifts of the SpiritChapter 23 The SacramentChapter 24 The Sabbath DayChapter 25 FastingChapter 26 SacrificeChapter 27 Work and Personal ResponsibilityChapter 28 ServiceChapter 29 The Lord’s Law of HealthChapter 30 CharityChapter 31 HonestyChapter 32 Tithes and OfferingsChapter 33 Missionary WorkChapter 34 Developing Our TalentsChapter 35 ObedienceChapter 36 The Family Can Be EternalChapter 37 Family ResponsibilitiesChapter 38 Eternal MarriageChapter 39 The Law of ChastityChapter 40 Temple Work and Family HistoryChapter 41 The Postmortal Spirit WorldChapter 42 The Gathering of the House of IsraelChapter 43 Signs of the Second ComingChapter 44 The Second Coming of Jesus ChristChapter 45 The MillenniumChapter 46 The Final JudgmentChapter 47 Exaltation Quote
applepansy Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 alex, LM suggestions for the Gospel Principle manual is a good one. The book should be available in your ward library. Or ask your Bishop. You can also get a cope from the Church Distribution Center online. And of course the Scriptures are always the best reference. Quote
NightSG Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 IIRC, the Gospel Principles audiobook is also available on iTunes for free. Quote
ozl89 Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 You always have the mormon channel at youtubeMormon Channel - YouTube Quote
RMGuy Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 I think a lot of it depends upon what you want to learn. If you want to hear about all the good things that the church teaches/is/does, then I highly recommend lds.org, gospel principles, etc. If you want to learn about how individual members apply doctrinal teachings in real world applications then sights such as this as a wonderful resource. If you are looking to explore areas of doctrine that are controversial/problematic then there are others. My experience is that multiple sources and multiple perspectives usually provide the clearest and most accurate view of reality. As a classic example, I will offer this. If you want to learn how wonderful a car that Ford makes then go visit your local Ford dealer. If you want to hear all the reasons you shouldn't buy a Ford, talk to your local Chevy dealer. If you want to know about Ford's customer satisfaction ask a variety of individuals that drive a Ford - not just one, and not just those that are happy or miserable with their choices. You have to talk to those that believe they have gotten both good and bad service. Finally, if you want to know if a Ford is the right car for you, then I would do all of the above, plus some additional research as well. In part, where and how you search for answers will determine in large measure what you find....both pro and con. Quote
Traveler Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 The best source of LDS doctrine is the Standard Works - Scripture. Read them yourself. Second best source of LDS doctrine are the conference talks. These constitute what I would call the meat and potatoes or the main course. However, I have posted this before - the goal of life is not to know and understand doctrine - that is secondary to our purpose. The main purpose is to strengthen families. No individual can be strengthened unless their families and their position in their various families is strengthened. What we do is not an act of service unless we help others become better husbands and wives, mothers and fathers as well as sons and daughters. We cannot help others unless we are examples ourselves. The boy scouts have a motto "Do a good turn daily". Every day we need to do something specific to strengthen families - in our homes - our neighborhoods, our cities and towns, our extended communities, our countries and in the world. olytitan Posted August 14, 2012 Report Posted August 14, 2012 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the official church website. It's where we can look up scriptures, see all of the manuals for classes for adults, teens, and children, as well as the church magazines for children (The Friend), teens (New Era), and adults (Ensign). It has links for the temples, church history, etc.Mormon.org | Beliefs and People of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was created to help people who wanted to know about doctrines, what we believe.youtube??? Not sure, but there are some good things on there. There are some really good videos on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well that were specifically made by the Church, but some of them may also be on youtube. I really haven't looked a lot.If you have a very specific question, just ask here if you don't want to keep searching the websites. Maybe there are certain things that you wonder how we are different from you? I'm sure we would have the same questions of you. I really don't know what the main beliefs are of a Seventh Day Adventist and how they are different from us.A thing with our religion, is that we believe that God didn't speak only to the Jews who gave us the Bible. That is why we have the Book of Mormon. We believe there are other scriptures out there somewhere, that some day we will be able to read from other cultures as well. If you want to look into the difference of us having a Book of Mormon and Doctrine and covenants, you might want to read them. You can find them online at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Select Book of Mormon. Read the intro to it as well. It explains a lot. Quote
alexamasan Posted August 17, 2012 Author Report Posted August 17, 2012 thanks everyone, it seems the gospel principles are a good place to start. Quote
bytebear Posted August 17, 2012 Report Posted August 17, 2012 You can always attend church services. Quote
bcguy Posted August 18, 2012 Report Posted August 18, 2012 Never except what you hear from a member of the church be it a bishop or of any authority unless you look it up in the book of mormon as a actual fact. Any questions, referance the book of mormon and the king james version of the bible. BTW, its a real shame that mankind even today, do not read the Bible as it shows that mankind has made the same mistakes today, as it did 2000 year ago. The great depression and the finacial crisis of 2008 have three things in common. 1. Greed 2. Corruption 3. Fraud. I am sure if you look far enough in history in the bible you will see simular stories such as these that happened. So if a prophet of God such as President Monson were to reveal to us something that was revealed to him, we shouldn't listen to him unless we can find it in the Bible or Book of Mormon? Isn't that what modern revelation is all about? Quote
bcguy Posted August 18, 2012 Report Posted August 18, 2012 Modern revelation is fine if its relevant to what may happen and is not based on text in the bible or the bom. Quote
