pam Posted October 27, 2012 Report Posted October 27, 2012 Nahhh I don't play video games. It just surely seemed to fit following your comment. (Realizing your name isn't Shirley). Quote

NightSG Posted October 28, 2012 Report Posted October 28, 2012 Surely I'm not the only one.Between Khan, Open Yale Courses and UMKC, I have kept myself up a lot of times that I shouldn't have. There are a lot of classes I'd like to take, but don't need credit for. Quote
slamjet Posted October 28, 2012 Report Posted October 28, 2012 I'm afraid. I'll never get any work done. Thus, I don't do any video games. I'll get way to obsessive. Quote
pam Posted October 28, 2012 Report Posted October 28, 2012 I spend enough time playing Song Pop on facebook to play anything else. Quote
Guest Posted October 28, 2012 Report Posted October 28, 2012 Hubby and I have been excited about Khan Academy since we heard about it, but neither of us has time or energy (at least not at the same time) to take advantage right now. Quote

Windseeker Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 So I looked up Khan Academy and it's not a video game. It appears to be a website that has educational tutorials. What's addicting about it? Quote

Vort Posted October 30, 2012 Author Report Posted October 30, 2012 So I looked up Khan Academy and it's not a video game. It appears to be a website that has educational tutorials. What's addicting about it?I dunno. It's just...addicting. You start doing the exercises, complete a unit, then every so often the site retests you on what you've done. When you finish the whole thing (I'm talking about the math), it's a continuing challenge to remember how to pull the vertices out of equations for parabolas or apply l'Hôpital's rule correctly -- or more likely, figure out again how to do those things. And if you don't know something, Sal has a video explaining it. His videos are off-the-cuff, tend to be poorly organized, and are repetitive, redundant, and say the same thing over and over again. But they are effective. I learned more about solving ordinary differential equations by watching his videos than I ever learned taking a Diff Eq class. Quote
Connie Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 "Repetitive, redundant, and say the same thing over and over again." Haha, i love you, Vort! I agree with your assessment of Sal's videos. They are very poorly organized and repetitive, but they are effective. I think it's the repetition that makes them so. Saying the same thing in 10 different ways in one video does tend to get the point across. Love Khan Academy. Learning can be very addictive. Quote
Windseeker Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 I saw the SAT Math section. I'll have to have my son look over those review videos. They look pretty good. Quote

I wish I could claim ownership of that line, but I got it from the mouth of Frasier on an old episode of Cheers. Quote
BadWolf Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 I haven't been able to get into Khan, yet... (Which, as an exHS'er is almost sacrilegious, I know!)But am thoroughly addicted to TED TED | Talks | ListAs well as ; Oxford/Cambridge/Yale/UCLA's complete coursework online (from syllabi, reading notes, power points, lecture notes, assignments, etc) Quote
