NeuroTypical Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 Breaking news of a shooting in Sandy Hook Elementary School of Newton, Connecticut. Possibly two gunmen? My first thought was one bad guy, and one lawbreaking good guy who had a gun in a gun free zone. I guess we'll have to see. Quote

Backroads Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 A kindergarten, for goodness' sakes. My heart breaks. This is just evil. Quote
Jenamarie Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 I am in tears. The information just keeps getting worse. SO many innocent children. Quote
Guest Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 My heart goes out to the victims. Seems like the Principal and the Guidance Counselor (? - they called her school psychologist) are dead. The shooter is one of the dads of the kids. The school is K-4. That's just crazy. Something that just went whooz through my schizophrenic brain - I never understood why when one school gets a shooting the entire county school system shuts down. It's highly unlikely that the shooter - who is dead on scene - would instigate another shooting somewhere else. I mean, when that Aurora theater thing happened, I don't remember all the theaters shutting down. Or maybe it did? (Sorry. It's my brain's way of dealing with tragedy. Find a non-tragic angle to chew on while the rest of the brain slowly assimilates the tragedy). Quote

Even though I know we could still be the victims of a home invasion or whatever, I think there's a visceral "circle the wagons" reaction that comes with news like this. I imagine the schools are/will close because so many parents will be wanting to keep their children close until the feelings associated with the tragedy aren't so raw any more. Quote

The tragedy of this not to be dismissed, but this hardly means sudden danger for all other schools. Quote

Depending on what the motivation for the attack, if a second attacker was on the run, and not knowing what his motivation was, it would be prudent to protect other helpless children rather than shrug and hope that there was no chance a second gun man might want to keep going on what ever mission is in their mind. Also there is some fear of copy cat actions. While they might not pop up on the same day there is a chance and being people feel like they've already failed one set of kids they don't want to risk that again. I imagine the schools are/will close because so many parents will be wanting to keep their children close until the feelings associated with the tragedy aren't so raw any more.My parents live in CT. The first thing I did when I heard the news was call her and tell her I love her.On 9-11-01, my parents had lived in CT for less that two weeks, while I was still in OR. I spent all day trying to reach them on their cell phones (they weren't even living in their house yet). When I finally did, it was shortly before my mom had to go pick my brother and sister up from school, and I remember vividly her saying to me, "I have the sudden need to hug my children right now."Earlier this week, when there was a shooting at Clackamas Town Center, outside Portland (a mall I used to work in, at four different places), the mall closed for an entire day afterward. During the Christmas season. That may have been partly procedural, as it was a crime scene, but I imagine not entirely. People needed to process and begin to recover slightly.Jena, I think you've hit the nail on the head with this post. Quote
Jenamarie Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 The Clackamas shooting got me too. I've eaten in that food court with my kids many, many times. I've walked through that Macy's, on the second floor. I know where that staircase is the shooter ran down before offing himself. This weeks' shootings are just hitting way too close to home for me. OldPort Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 The reality is that good and evil exists. I hope people value life enough to have the tools and training to fight it. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, families, and emergency personnel who are in CT right now. Quote
Backroads Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 I'm almost thinking "I don't want to bring a baby into this world"! But the outpowering of love I'm seeing even just online makes me realize there is still plenty of good in this world. Quote

My town doesn't have any decent shopping, so whenever we need/want to do some shopping at decent stores we head down to Portland. It's also close to the DI, so we usually hit that up too while we're there. Quote

Traveler Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 I agree this is most sad. I believe and am concerned that death is not the worse threat to our children. Nor do I believe that the evil crazed mind that murders children is likely to be the predator most likely to harm the most of our children. Sadly I will not be surprised to learn that the shooter had previous and known mental problems has been treated by mood altering drugs that are so popular in our culture for fix such things.
