TIL gangster has a different meaning than gangsta.   Although I fail to see the difference.  Gangsta is not criminal while gangster is?  Is that it?

It's a cultural dialect thing.  White guys with mortgages and jobs, who do things like type on keyboards or appear on Jeopardy, say "gangster".  Folks who say "gangsta" aren't really here to represent their group.
