Sunday21 Posted April 30, 2018 Report Posted April 30, 2018 https://youtu.be/BX_0-SoMDcg Why are we unacceptable? This like the time when we were discussing dress standards at work and a senior executive said, ‘We don’t want to look like Mormons’. What! Why not? NeuroTypical and lostinwater 1 1 Quote
Vort Posted April 30, 2018 Report Posted April 30, 2018 It's supposed to be funny. I carefully watched the entire thing, and I didn't even crack a smile. Not once. Despite MormonGator's protestations, I'm not humorless. I just expect something to be funny before I laugh at it. There was not one moment of funniness in that strangely unfunny clip. Maybe I just lack the New York-informed background to find their "jokes" hilarious. Sunday21 1 Quote
Guest MormonGator Posted April 30, 2018 Report Posted April 30, 2018 (edited) Ah, @Vort. From the day of his birth, he never knew mirth. I didn't find it funny, but I didn't find it offensive either. Just smile and move on. At least they tried. Edited April 30, 2018 by MormonGator Quote
NeuroTypical Posted April 30, 2018 Report Posted April 30, 2018 (edited) I enjoy the heck out of this guy's videos. Mormons aren't really his audience, and maybe only 20% or so of his stuff we really 'get'. Everything else we have sort of a foundational disconnect around. Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." If you think that's the definition of "church", this guy is talking to you, and you'll be a better Christian for watching his videos and bettering yourself accordingly. JohnsonJones Posted April 30, 2018 Report Posted April 30, 2018 (edited) I got most of it. It's funny enough to be entertaining. Not enough to laugh at, but most humor these days is not enough to laugh at. This video exemplifies how millenials who are Non-denominational Christians find a church. It does not apply to the Southern Baptists...they'd either find a Southern Baptist church (though there are a lot of choices in the South for that, not so much elsewhere), or a Baptist church that was agreeable instead of looking at the vast number of other churches. It does not apply to the Presbyterian...normally they'd go to the congregation that was part of their specific church in the area. It does not really apply to those who are dedicated Methodists (though probably to the less dedicated Methodists) as they would go to the Methodist congregation that was part of their church in the area (so a UMC would go to a UMC congregation). It mostly applies to the Non-Denominational type of Christians who go looking for a church that "fits" when they seek a church out. Edited April 30, 2018 by JohnsonJones Quote
NeuroTypical Posted April 30, 2018 Report Posted April 30, 2018 So, if that one didn't do it for you, try this one. This was actually filmed at the New Life Church in Colo Springs, where my wife did homeschool co-op with our daughters for several years. I think I know the people mentioned at 0:50. Sunday21 1 Quote
Vort Posted April 30, 2018 Report Posted April 30, 2018 This guy simply doesn't do it for me. Not funny. But at least now I understand why non-Mormons talk about us doing "mission trips". Sunday21 1 Quote
NeuroTypical Posted April 30, 2018 Report Posted April 30, 2018 (edited) I've been spoiled in examples of Christians doing 'mission trips'. My old boss many years ago was one of these zealous Christians, we had many wonderful discussions over lunch across years. He and his wife decided one year to just stop doing the whole US-work-for-salary thing, they sold most of their worldly possessions, took their 2 yr old, and moved to Thailand. Where apparently the greatest population of un-Bibled people on earth lived (or something). I got to watch this idea grow to fruition during our lunches. I read dude's newsletters for a few years as they progressed. He ended up putting his business organization skills to good use, and founded a company that specialized in "Gathering, Guiding, Unifying" mission organizations in Thailand. Looks like he's still there: www.teamunity.net I bet he'd find these videos hilarious, and could probably talk for two hours straight about how these people really exist, and how he helps them along. Dude worked really, really hard at not being rude at me because I was one of those Mormons. He obviously had much to say on the topic, but never let me hear it. I took it as a sign of respect. Sunday21 Posted May 9, 2018 Author Report Posted May 9, 2018 (edited) Very Cross!!!! Reading a report at work today on attitudes of different societal groups. It lists groups:Christians, Jews, Buddishists...(at the end of the list) Other (includes New Age, Mormon, Rastifarians). Very annoyed! 😡 Edited May 10, 2018 by Sunday21 Quote
NeuroTypical Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 Heh. Sometimes folks get us confused with Scientologists. It's always nice to hear when they spend an extra two seconds looking, they usually get pleasantly surprised about us. Sunday21 1 Quote

After all, asking someone to do something you wouldn't do makes you a bit of a hypocrite. If you ask someone to go to your church, you better be willing to do the same. Quote

The Jericho comment was by far the cleverest, funniest part of the video. It didn't even rate a smile. Guess my standards are just too darn high. Quote

I might offer a friend of my child, one from a horrible, abusive home, to allow a sleepover, though I would have no intention of allowing my own child to reciprocate such an invitation. Quote

Oh by all means, there are exceptions my friend. The one you described was certainly one of them. For the most part though, don't expect people to take your invitations seriously (and this goes for everyone, not just @Vort of course) if you can't be bothered to do the same thing for them. Quote
