There wouldn't be a ward. To be declared a ward instead of a branch there has to be a certain number of people. I highly doubt that a ward would be established if there were 0 men in it. Besides you can't have a ward without Priesthood leadership.2 points -

Funny! You know I wanted to rant about why the heck people in this country celebrate Cinco de Mayo and you took the wind right out of my sails. That's hard to do, so I have to give you props.1 point -
Sin...just how bad is it?
Seminarysnoozer reacted to Traveler for a topic
In this matter I will speak only for my self. It seems to me that our experience with sin is a good news bad news kind of thing. I will use the example of soiled clothing as the example of sin. The bad news is that sin soils the clothing that is our life - not just our mortal life but our eternal forever life. Sin does not just look bad on our clothing but it stinks really badly and never goes away. The good news is that there is a way to wash our clothing. It is called baptism and is only provided by Jesus Christ who was ordained a High Priest after the Order of Melchizedek. I believe the only way to get your garments clean is by the single means of baptism provided by Jesus Christ or someone properly acting as the proxy of Christ (example - the apostles ordained to that same order by Jesus). More bad news - There are a lot of counterfeits claiming to be able to get our clothing clean but despite claims (some very exotic or emotional claims) - just will not work. The good news is that temples have been build so that everyone, regardless of time and place can get their clothing washed with the one baptism that works.1 point -
Sin...just how bad is it?

We believe that was the test that took place before coming here, what is called the "first estate". That is where we had all the facts, all the truth before us. Everyone here chose correctly and therefore will merit a Kingdom of Heaven through the saving grace of Christ. The test of mortality was meant to take place with minimal information as to reflect our true, primitive nature and drives, "the desire of our heart". Now we face the test of true character, whether we will actually do the thing we said we would or not. It is a test of integrity, or 'how far would you go?' We all believe in Christ, we sometimes call this the "light of Christ" and it is ours to ignore as we chose to ignore our spiritual side in this life. Sin, then is a reflection of character, not a mistake that someone can say, "oops, my bad." This probationary period we call mortality is the only chance we have to change character, a "change of heart," or being born again. After this, our trajectory is set. I explain it to my children this way; A soldier in boot camp will vow to never leave a fallen soldier behind, they all agree to that standard (like what we agree to in pre-mortal life). But, in the heat of the battle only some will actually follow through with that standard (integrity - the test of mortality). Just like in this life, only some will actually follow through with their professed belief in the God's plan, to require a Savior, and have enough faith to follow His gospel despite being in the "heat of the battle". So, sin is really bad in terms of it reflecting our true nature, our difficult to change character. It is a deep hole that is difficult to get out of but it can be done through repentence.1 point -
The Church pays attention to available (aka active) priesthood holders when creating branches or wards (there are minimum numbers involved), or when upgrading/downgrading from one to the other. If there were 0 men in the unit then the unit would be disbanded. As far as a ward where there was some temporary situation in which there were very few men they'd either: 1) Cancel Church that Sunday. 2) While the usual passing route (for a moderately sized ward) has two or three priesthood holders blessing the sacrament and a half-dozen or more passing, nothing prevents say three priesthood holders blessing and then passing the sacrament. The Bishop himself could help pass (or bless). This might mean passing it takes longer, but it could be done. If we're talking about a ward where there were temporarily no priesthood holders able to make it you go to #1 of the above.1 point

So, just for information's sake, I just read three other translations of this story - The New International Version, The Living Bible and The Revised Standard Version. All three say that "they" in the King James Version is the brothers who pulled Joseph out of the well, not the Midianites. And Reuben was inexplicably away at the time that Joseph was sold. I've never delved into the Bible stories before like I have this year, teaching Primary. Wow, the things you learn as a teacher!1 point

Talk to a bishop. Take optimal care of yourself and seek the guidance of the Holy Ghost as much as it is available to you. I would say taking advice on what to do with the child should be between you and the Lord with council from a bishop. I am sorry you are going through this and please remember the atonement is their to help you through this. Also, I am sorry that some people feel the need the hog pile you because you used the word abortion in your post.1 point

Life, Liberty, and Property - pick any two
mordorbund reacted to yjacket for a topic
I'll pick just one, property. All other rights can be extrapolated from property rights. Before one can truly understand rights, a clear distinction must be made between legality and morality. Legality means that a bunch of other people of the ability to forcibly deprive one of their rights. Morality is a higher law than legality and is what one should do regardless of the legality of something. A key distinction between morality and legality is should and must, morality is what one should do based upon either an internal conscience, religion, etc.. Legality is what a bunch of other people say one must do. The most basic property right is the question of who owns me? Who owns my body? And the follow-up question is what does it mean to own something. To own something, means to do with it how one pleases. If I own my body, and consequently everyone owns their body, then a legal framework should be set up to protect that right. This means that anytime I do anything to another human being that they do not approve of (i.e. use of force), I should have my own property rights violated. From the fact that I own myself, other property rights are defined, i.e. by extension anything that I make is an extension of me as I have mixed my body, my labor with things in the natural world that have no ownership. Therefore, anytime that in a basic natural state (i.e. a garden of eden type scenario) anything that I form I have ownership over. So I modify the land and create a farm, I own it. The extrapolation of property rights can be used to form natural rights of life and liberty and freedom of conscience. In a complex world, the interleaving of property rights can be very complex but IMO almost all problems in the world can be broken down to a violation of property rights.1 point -
Is Utah really the nerdiest state???
Blackmarch reacted to SpiritDragon for a topic
This whole thing got me thinking about the criteria for being a nerd. I have always equated it with a certain lack of social skills rather than particular interests, although admittedly certain activities seem to draw in the socially awkward. Anyway I found this description fun and somewhat useful: Geek One of four titles used to classify someone based on their technical and social skills. The other three titles are nerd, dork, and normie. The difference between the four titles can be easily shown in table form: ................ Technical ...... Social Title ............ Skills ......... Skills ---------- ---------------- ------------ Normie ......... No ............. Yes Geek ........... Yes ............. Yes Nerd ........... Yes ............. No Dork ............ No .............. No Normie: A normal person. Blah. Geek: An outwardly normal person who has taken the time to learn technical skills. Geeks have as normal a social life as anyone, and usually the only way to tell if someone is a geek is if they inform you of their skills. Nerd: A socially awkward person who has learned technical skills due to the spare time they enjoy from being generally neglected. Their technical knowledge then leads normies to neglect them even further, leading to more development of their technical skills, more neglection, etc. This vicious cycle drives them even more into social oblivion. Dork: A person who, although also socially awkward, doesn't have the intelligence to fill the void with technical pursuits, like a nerd, and is forced to do mindless activities. Almost always alone. Usually with an XBox. Like playing Halo. All day. Every day. Not even understanding how the Xbox is making the pretty pictures on the screen. Very sad. If you met me at a party, you would have no idea that I enjoy finite element analysis-based inviscid flow modelling using computational fluid dynamics. That's because I'm a geek. I must admit I've never heard of a normie, and never been referred to as any of the other titles. However by this classification system I too would be a geek because I seem to interact with other humans just fine, while having a very technical side (although biology is not the usual geek science). I certainly have many "nerd" interests if that means I enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and role-playing. Perhaps this study is a better indication of the people in a population who are open to include many interests as opposed to socially awkward rejects.1 point -
Favourite Princess Bride line?

Inigo Montoya: Fezzik, jog his memory. Fezzik: Sorry Inigo, I did not mean to jog him so hard. Count Rugen: I've just sucked one year of your life away. I might one day go as high as five, but I really don't know what that would do to you. So, let's just start with what we have. What did this do to you? Tell me. And remember, this is for posterity so be honest. How do you feel? Inigo Montoya: You seem a decent fellow. I hate to kill you.The Man in Black: You seem a decent fellow. I hate to die. Prince Humperdinck: Tyrone, you know how much I love watching you work, but I’ve got my country’s 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder and Guilder to frame for it; I’m swamped. Fezzik: Inigo, I saw the Prince's stables, and there they were, four white horses. And I thought, there are four of us, if we ever find the lady. [buttercup appears at the window] Hello, lady! So I took them with me, in case we ever bumped into each other. I guess we just did.Inigo Montoya: Fezzik, you did something right.Fezzik: Don't worry. I won't let it go to my head. (NOTE: I say "Hello Lady" as a greeting to women way too often) Man in Black: I asked him what was so important for him. "True love," he replied. And then he spoke of a girl of surpassing beauty and faithfulness. I can only assume he meant you. Inigo Montoya: He's right on top of us. I wonder if he is using the same wind we are using. Westley: Who are you? Are we enemies? Why am I on this wall? Where is Buttercup? Westley: I'll explain and I'll use small words so that you'll be sure to understand, you warthog faced buffoon.1 point
