  1. I am happy that Kevin is here. However, I have a problem with the above poster with their first post. I don't think that anyone should use the name "moderator" in vain - particularly usurping some kind of "authority" that isn't recognized. It is my opinion that "moderator" should be told to change their name on this site and behave appropriately. I bring this up because I didn't think that this was an appropriate comment and it really isn't from one of OUR moderators. Thank you.
  2. Throw 1 in the toaster. (I accidently did this to a "Little Einsteins" DVD I had for the kids!) Throw another in the microwave. Break the others in half. This ensures that no one else can use them. I did this to a bunch of "Smallville" DVDs that I found to be too much "soft porn" and suggestive themes. It just didn't feel right to sell them and profit at the spiritual degradation of others.
  3. Okay, let's set the record straight. The issue isn't and wasn't YOU. The issue is with the member that accompanied the missionaries. Here's my guess: They probably felt embarrassed themselves for how this "role play" went. Members are to accompany missionaries for the purposes of bearing testimony and fellowship. It is all about sharing and feeling the spirit (at least that's what it's SUPPOSED to be about). Yes, you'll want to know correct reasoning behind certain questions and ask yourself if you believe in the answers they give you. You can pray about the answers they give you to gain your own testimony. Don't worry about this. The questions to become baptised aren't "multiple choice". They are questions about faith, testimony and lifestyle. There isn't any kind of "minimum Mormon knowledge" exam that must be passed (for your salvation). Missionaries deal with certain kinds of gospel opposition all the time. I think they'd like to be sure that you have the tools and knowledge available to help you build your testimony and share it without feeling ashamed of your faith. Keep reading the Book of Mormon, praying and share your concerns with the missionaries. If you felt an issue with the last appointment -- TELL THEM. Without communication, this is where barriers to the truth happen. This can be when you feel "ashamed" that "you don't know as much as so-and-so, so why bother?" You know enough to follow the Spirit and become a member of Christ's church. That's what you need to know and hang on to. There are 3 aspects to spirituality: Studying, practicing & teaching. "Practicing" is your lifestyle. "Studying" is reading and delving deeper into the gospel. "Teaching" is what you do by example and by your words. I hope this has helped some!
  4. "Seek first to understand, then to be understood." - Dr. Stephen R. Covey In online forums where all we read are the text of words on the screen, it's VERY important to put proper emphasis on certain words and phrase things appropriately. (That's why I CAPITALIZE certain words - to give emaphasis, not to shout.) I almost never say "This is the way it is!" or anything of the sort. This implies a closed-mind to anything contrary to your opinion and will incite more defensive posts. I will usually say things like: - "I'm not completely sure, but..." - "But what about ..." - "I always thought..." - "This is what I've always been told..." - "Help me to understand..." "Put [your ego aside] so that OTHERS may be right!" If we have too much of our ego and pride into our posts so that we are not open to learning, then this is a good time to practice using some of the phrases I put above. Phrase it differently, so we can all learn from you but not in a "dictatorial" way. Being able to do this demonstrates a personal security in yourself and your beliefs. I will always post my reference links and ask the other poster to post theirs - for greater collaboration and understanding. There are two things you should always be trying to get across to those reading the thread: 1) That you have a valuable opinion worthy of discussion to clarify for all posters and readers, and 2) That you are a person worth having that discussion with. I think those 2 points are really worth learning and adapting into all facets of your life, not just online. For a reference, take a look at this thread in an investment advisor discussion board: Registered Rep. Broker Forums: Anyone have RMD knowledge? Someone posted a question, and I gave (what I thought) would be an appropriate answer. Others gave their opinion also. I gave another opinion, then the original poster stated some things that I already knew, but other things that I didn't. It could easily be read with a tone that says "Hey stupid - it's like this. See?" I now have a choice: I can either - become sulky and not participate in the thread. I can shout insults or I can reference what he's talking about and see if I can learn something. Again, I don't mind being wrong, and long as it's done tactfully and with references that lend credibility. On the 2nd page of the thread, I showed a reference to something that backed up the original poster's thoughts and admitted that he was right! We can all now benefit from the discussion, and not just take it as one person's view over another. BTW, if you ever think I'm shouting... you have CAPSLOCKAPHOBIA! :)

If you find "The Simpsons" funny, then you understand sarcasm. Just listen to Homer. He's full of it (Pun fully intended).

    Sarcasm

Have some fun and read some of these articles. They're funny and they have sarcasm in them. Dave Barry - MiamiHerald.com Humor is an art, but it can be elusive if you weren't brought up with it.
  7. I first heard that story in a financial "joke" book. The setup was someone filling out an insurance claim form, and the reason was "Trying to do the job myself" and this was his description to elaborate for the insurance claim! Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread.

I'm going to disagree with you in an agreeable way. We read and see emotion online... but it's OUR OWN emotion that we're reading into the posts, not the poster or possibly the poster's intent behind the posting.
  9. ebay with full disclosure on condition.
  10. You either got it off of ebay, or you're serving as a stake missionary?
  11. This isn't the only forum that does that. It's part of the software programming code for the forum. Don't be alarmed. Besides, if you wanted to build an online forum, wouldn't you want to encourage participation?
  12. The forum question was "Would you kill if GOD commanded you to?" God has a resurrected, glorified body of flesh and bone. HE can shake my hand because he has a body that I can touch.
  13. To tell the truth is to become more like God. "God is Truth." Satan's angels will NOT do anything that will lead them (or us) towards our Heavenly Father. They will LIE, CHEAT AND DECEIVE. That is the eternal hell they've chosen and that's where they want to lead us. Perhaps I'm naive, but there are some absolutes in this world, and I think this would be one of them.
  14. Do you think their names were embossed on their scriptures?
  15. I would ask if I could shake his hand first. If I could shake his hand, I would. (no deception) If the messenger stated that he couldn't (and didn't move), then I would. (no deception) If the messenger tries but cannot grasp my hand, then I would have him depart. (attempt at deception)
  16. You must be in California. I got one of those flyers today too. Didn't see the video.
  17. Book of Moses. Dress in your Sunday attire. Larger temples have temple robes for rent and charge a small cleaning fee for you to rent them. Pray. Understand that these are very sacred ceremonies and are different from Sunday worship services. Focus on the spirit and enjoy this experience! The best way to remember what happens in the temple is to attend regularly.
  18. I was always told that you represent the Bishop by visiting the family. (Stick with me on this.) Remember that you return and report back to the Elder's Quorum President/HP Group Leader. If you don't, you should because just saying you did "100%" doesn't mean anything. You need to communicate back about your families and about people, not about checking another task off your list for the month. They report back to the Bishop in PEC (Priesthood Executive Committee) meeting. So, when you go to do your home teaching, remember that you are there to help the Bishop look after a small part of the ward family and return to report if they can use help from the ward in any way. (No, you don't do anything in regards to worthiness, but you can help with communicating any temporal needs or spiritual needs outside of worthiness issues.) While you're there, have a message, but don't be "scripted" or rigid with a lesson agenda. Share stories, use scriptures and get any kids involved as best as you can. Have a spiritual meeting, but keep it friendly. I would also highly encourage you to complete your home teaching during the first 2 Sundays of the month... because it shows that you are magnifying that calling by not waiting to the last minute. Also, it means that if you miss a family one week, you've got another 2 Sundays to see them! Here's an old LDS joke: "My home teacher is so good, he comes on the FIRST day of the month, every month!" "Oh yeah? My home teacher comes the DAY BEFORE THAT!"
  19. I've always hated that scripture. It just sounds so "parent-like"! Yeah, THANKS DAD! Just what I've always wanted... MORE EXPERIENCE! Doesn't that experience equate to a shorter life span? :) VisionofLehi, If you're really feeling down, there are two movies you ought to check out: - Pursuit of Happyness - Bruce Almighty Pursuit of Happyness just shows how far one can REALLY go on route to their dreams. Bruce Almighty is just a funny comedy about how well Bruce can clean up his life if he had God's powers endowed upon him. You'll find a connection with the beginning of the movie - trust me! Better watch Bruce Almighty FIRST before watching Pursuit of Happyness.
  20. I didn't go on my mission until I was 21. There was a steady 2-years of the same questions "Are you going on a mission? Are your papers in yet?, etc." To make it worse, my bishop was a recently returned Mission President! Who do you think he had on HIS radar, huh? My way of going against this was to wear a different color shirt (other than white) every Sunday to try to avoid that "fresh missionary look". If I had left at 19, I KNOW I would've wasted that time - because my heart wouldn'tve been in it. This did give me a chance to serve in different church callings during this time and that helped me exercise more faith and feel useful to the ward. I let everyone know that I was interested when I began wearing white shirts more frequently every Sunday. So, wear colored shirts and grow out a goatee and let everyone think you're a "rebel without a cause"!

  23. We sung this hymn at my grandmother's funeral. It spoiled it for my mom and my aunt for YEARS. My mother has made it her wish to have us sing "If you can hie to Kolob" at her funeral, so we don't attach a favorite church hymn to a funeral. ************************** Aside from that, singing it at numerous temple dedications makes it that much more special to me.
