  1. The missionary who baptised my sister ran away from the mission after he moved to his next area - got to the airport 500 miles away before he realised he needed his passport which was safely at the mission office - they convinced him to go back to the mission office but he didn't continue with his mission. He had never spent a night away from one or both of his parents - never even stayed with relatives without them - and all camps either his dad was there as a priest leader or scout master or his mum was the cook/first aider. My house mate suggested that maybe if you agreed to sit silently in the room during the interview you would be there but you couldn't be seen to be coaching your childs responses and likewise you can ensure that nothing untoward happens and that they person interviewing isn't coaching your child either
  2. If myself wondering if there is a way to compromise - for example could you get married and then both go visit some of his family and then a few years later go visit the rest etc? I would also suggest turning to the Lord for guidance - maybe attend the temple
  3. Over the years I have known some missionaries first names - but that was either because they let it slip accidentally or they were showing us their driving licence and how aweful the photo was etc. Other than that it has been when they moved on if they gave us a home address to write to them when they got home. The only missionaries whose have willingly told me there first names was one of the 2 we currently have and her former companion because they wanted us to add them on facebook so they can accept us when they get home. Even as a ward missionary myself I don't feel the need to be knowing the other Sisters name - not knowing it doesn't affect my ability to work with her.
  4. Thats fab :) One of my fav moments in Primary was when I was covering primary as the Primary president was on stake assignment (being a small branch with only 4 children we only had the primary pres and one teacher). Anyway the week before when I had been covering the children had asked if they could do coloring - I didn't have anything that week but promised they could the following week - and since the following we week were doing the plan of salvation I decided that they could color in the visuals we use and I would teach them while they were coloring - the loved it :) and it reduced how much prep work I had to do
  5. crumbed and added to white chocolate fudge :)
  6. Until she was released to be called as a Branch missionary my housemate was RS secretary and I am sure she taught some first sundays of the month.
  7. If you sat in a room adjacent to the room your son will be interviewed then you will probably be able to hear what is going on - I say this because when my friend was getting interviewed she had her interview in the kitchen and the rest of us waited in the adjacent living room - I could hear most of what was going on.
  8. One from the parental: I went to the library the other day to see if they had any DIY books - specifically I wanted to see if they had books on shelves
  9. I loved the sessions of conference that I was able to see and I don't think I could pick out a favorite talk. I think the 2 things that have struck me most about this years conference are that firstly my flatmate decided that she did want to go today after saying all week that she didn't want to and secondly something that happened yesterday on our way home after the Morning session Broadcast. We had left and were headed with the missionaries in the car. I looked in my bag for my mobile to see if I had any messages as I thought I had felt it vibrate during conference - and I couldn't find it - I even had the sisters call me hoping that my phone would vibrate and light up - and it didn't do either. So we returned to the chapel to look for it. I didn't find it but we discovered that everyone had gone but one elderly sister and the person locking up. The poor old dear didn't have a lift home to her town and there were no buses at that time of night. We just about had enough fuel to be able to take her home so we did. Of course as soon as my friend said we would take this dear sister who feeds half the missionaries in the stake on conference Sunday home my phone appeared. We believe we were meant to go back to the chapel and what a blessing it was to be able to help this dear sister.
  10. I loved all the songs they sang this conference - it really made my heart happy to hear them - especially We thank thee oh God for a Prophet as it has special meaning to me. Oh how I wish I could sing with the choir - might have to make a major relocation for that to even be a possibility - anyone want to find me a nice husband who lives within an hour of SLC?
  11. There are loads of senior missionaries serving at Nauvoo - at least there were when I was there! They did all sorts of tours around the various different locations in Nauvoo. The same at Historic Kirtland.
  12. Do you have any specific questions we can answer for you?
  13. Autism is one of those conditions that affects each differently - I would suggest getting the know the young man - what he does and doesn't like - and let him be your guide in how to get involved. I have a couple of Brownies on the sectrum and involving them in our weekly meetings can be a challenge but it can be done. Also pray about the sittuation and maybe speak to his former home teaching companion and see how they made things work and build on that!
  14. Cos the church buildings are always toooo hot!
  15. In the UK people have no choice but to get married in a civil ceremony before we can be sealed in the temple (because the law here is that you can only get legally married in a place where the general public can access and object to the wedding etc - or something like that). Most people get married in the temple on the same day but not everyone does. I have a few friends who have chosen to wait the necessary year - and I don't think any of them have said that they feel like 2nd class citizens.
  16. Cultural Hall weddings can be beautiful - and as for the food you don't know why they ended up with KFC - my friends reception was in the cultural hall (they had an early chapel wedding followed by a reception before heading to the temple to be sealed - as that is the only way to do it in the UK). The cultural hall was beautifully decorated - and they had tented it - but the food was a BBQ because at the last minute their caterer cancelled on them - that was all they could pull together. I was also reading another story in the national papers about a wedding planner who went bust without telling her clients - leaving them having to cobble stuff together on the day of wedding! At the end of the day - a wedding isn't about the niceness of the settings or the how good the food is - but about expressing your commitment before God and their friends and family - and maybe they were having a church wedding before going to the temple so that non-member families could be a part of the event!
  17. That was the thought that went through my head
  18. Pam my stew recipe works in both the slow cooker (crock pot) and on the hob Dice beef and brown off (has to be browned off even if you are using the crock pot chop up veggies of your choice - I use potatoes, carrot, turnip. parsnip, swede, mushrooms, bell peppers, usually Stick them all in the slow cooker with the beef, put a little water in the pan you browned the beef off in - to get the juices etc and then pour in to the slow cooker - add enough water to cover the veggies and leave to cook (I used to cook it when I was out at uni and work so left it cook for about 9hrs - on the hob it takes about 2 hrs) When nearly cooked stir in some gravy granules to thicken up the gravey Serve and enjoy :)
  19. I am in the UK - I have a pay as you go sim from Virgin and I am on my 3rd Samsung phone - this one is a galaxy something or other (not the S2 the one before that!) My only complaint with their phones is that they don't stand up to 20mins in a bath of strong bleach! (the sim card survived better the rest of the phone)
  20. What do you call a man with a fork in his head? Doug
  21. I am going to the library to see if they have DIY books - specifically I want to know if they have books on shelves
  22. While I was in university (sometime between 2001 and 2004) I read an article about a Jewish Lady living in America. She was one of Twins that was subjected to horrible experimentation during WW2 - and although both her and her sister survived her sister did eventually die from the effects of those experiments. She herself struggled with her health for a very, very long time. Nothing Drs did seemed to help. It wasn't until a Christian said to her that she needed to forgive those who were involved with the experimentation to be able to start to heal. She said that it took a lot of prayer and support from her Rabbi - but as she started to be able to face her past and forgive those people - as she did so her health started to improve. Now she runs a holocaust musuem and is still in good health. Remember that Christ didn't hang out with the rabbis and pharisees (sp?) but the publicans, humble fishermen and others. In going back to church you are going to a new ward from the one you were attending when you were a ysa (by the sounds of it) so they wont know what you were like before or why you stopped attending church so you will be starting with a clean slate so to speak. They will welcome you with open arms and give you all the support you need
  23. I have read all these comments with a great deal of interest. For a very long time I struggled with coming to church - in someways I still do - I get used to get very frustrated - and partly with myself for getting frustrated with others - for example one of our former Sunday school teachers was far from a natural teacher (to the point that if you didn't answer a question with the exact words in the lesson manual then you were wrong) - but I knew from sitting beside him some weeks when he wasn't teaching that it wasn't that he wasn't prepared because even when he wasn't teaching he would sit in class with his study note book on his lap with pages and pages of notes he had made for the lesson - and knew that if he put that much effort into preparing to attend the class he had to be putting in at least that much effort if not more into preparing to teach. And some speakers would just bore me stupid. I also found that being single my opinions weren't valued. It became harder and harder for me actually attend church. I am not sure exactly when or what changed but I think it might have been moving away to university. But I started to attend church for me - and that changed my experience. In addition I started studying my scriptures during the passing of Sacrament to keep my mind focused (otherwise it would wonder) - and doing so really improved my experience of the sacrament talks. Yes I still get frustrated when an RS teacher spends the whole lesson focusing on the life of the prophet rather than the doctrine found in the rest of the chapter or when one specific speaker over runs by 15-20 mins - but I find that they don't impact as much or take away from my church experience.
  24. I usually pay mine monthly - but sometimes my budget works out in such a way that I pay it bimonthly
  25. My mother taught me a cheats why to set sleeves that doesn't affect the look of the garment. Sew the should seems of the body but not the sides. Don't sew the sleeve either. Set the sleeve into the shoulder and then once that is sewn in place - sew your side seem and go straing on to to sewing the sleeve seem. Does that made sense?
