    3 month supply

Drain them, mash, add diced onions, diced celery and some mayo/miracle whip and you have a sandwich spread. I prefer Boston Baked beans for this. Husband thought I was nuts until I coaxed him into taking a bite. He likes it!!
  2. I was sealed to my parents in June of 2001- 2 months after I received my own endowment. I wanted so much for my younger brother and next older sister to stand as proxies with me. As the day approached, my youngest brother was not able to do so. I prayed about whether I should wait until he was able to go, or to go ahead and keep the date I set up at the Temple. My sister and I went to the Temple on the appointed day. I'm not sure what the standard procedure is, but we waited for nearly two hours for the sealing room. Then the temple workers told us that they were having difficulties finding a proxy to stand as my father. At that moment a rather large family was exiting one of the sealing rooms, and they overheard. The men all volunteered- I chose one- and we proceeded into the sealing room. His entire family asked to be witnesses- and we gladly accepted. This man was short, a wee bit stout and of rather dark complexion. My father was thin, 5'11", and fair complected. Dad's hands were thin, with long fingers. At the altar as we held hands, I saw the difference in this proxy father's hands- of course my sisters hands look like Mom's anyway (all of us girls have Mom's hands)- just as I bowed my head, those thicker dark complected hands faded into Dad's hands. As I looked up at the sealer, I could feel Dad & Mom's hands on mine. Even though the room was filled with the proxies family, it felt even fuller with my parents and ancestors standing as witnesses. No matter which temple I am in, whether I am doing initiatories, endowments, or assisting the YW at baptisms, I have always felt the spirits of the departed who are there receiving the ordinances. The ONLY place in the temple where I cannot feel them is in the dressing rooms. The only thing that matters is that the proxy be of the same gender. Of course they must be worthy to enter the temple.
  3. No offense taken- we lived in that house from the time I was 2 yrs old until I was 9- I would have cut the plants and inch from the soil and brought them in to put in vases. My older siblings would have "worked" the soil, "hepping Grandma" with her garden. If the yard had been large enough, she would have grown her own tobacco- my parents were not members then- and all three smoked. Saving money by growing their own tobacco would have appealed to them. There was a good patch of ground next to the driveway boarding the neighbors driveway. Grandma grew potatoes there. I was forever breaking off the flowers and bringing them in to her. Did the same to my Dad's roses. Only I confiscated Mom's barber shears to cut the roses with. Got spanked only once for each offense. NEVER did it again. BTW, the spanking really didn't hurt- it was more noise and knowing that I had done wrong and really, really upset the parents and Grandma.
  4. That is where Comfort Food came from. Mashed potatoes with butter. Home made white bread, toasted w/blackberry jam. Meat loaf, scalloped potatoes, steamed fresh spinach w/a spritz of lemon juice and a small pat of butter. Home made split pea w/left over corned beef soup. Poor man's bread pudding = bread on plate, sprinkle sugar, cinnamon, & any other sweet spice and pour just enough milk to make it wet but not drowning. Home made chicken & noodle soup. Saltines crumbled in bowl, add milk.
  5. Mmmmmm, sounds so good! I have pork loin medallions in the freezer- next trip to the store I'll get some RudyBeggars (that's what I called them as a child) and do them in the crock pot. Mom boiled and mashed them or tossed them into stews and hearty soups. Grandma grew them in the back yard along with other veggies. Us kids were NOT allowed near the Kitchen Garden so I don't know what all else she grew.
  6. AMEN I know that I "thanked" this post, but it also needed the AMEN added to it. We used to have a woman in our Branch who made statements regarding Doctrine, etc. that were mostly - 'The Gospel According To Sister Opinionated'. The Branch Presidency knew to not assign her to give talks, and to be on the alert when she bore her testimony on Fast Sundays, which were not testimonies, but her opportunity to preach her version of the gospel.
  7. OFF TOPIC- Oh, Beefche, so not fair - you have a honey who really does do the Honey-Do's!! A N D cooks as well. Oh, so not fair!! You lucky gal! Dravin, I miss rutabaga's- Husband will only eat them in stews. sigh Time to get the soup pot out and start making stews and hearty soups.

    Food storage

This is new- was not available the last time I checked on line. Thanks for the link. BTW- shipping is FREE! BUT tax is not. I paid $46.95 for 45# pail of Hard Red Wheat. That is $1.04 pound. Shipping is $6.00 so now that cost per pound is $1.18 pound. Through the church a case of #10 cans, total weight of 33 pounds of wheat, costs $28.00 w/NO shipping charges. That is $0.85 a pound. Well, I will purchasing my wheat from the church from now on. Since I plan on making bread on a regular basis, and in grinding my own flour, then it makes sense to purchase the grain in case lots- two to three cases at a time. Done in #10 cans is perfect for me. I don't want to vacuum seal in glass jars. I would rather do the bags. Though probably the long term cost will turn out to be cheaper for the jars and FoodSaver jar attachment. Nope, the jar attachment is $9.99 for just one lid- I'll stick to the bags. If the bags are dropped, they won't break. They might break a toe or bones in the foot if it lands on my foot! But the bag won't be damaged. Nor will the food inside. Pop Corn- heard that too about it. My husband might object to his pop corn being ground up- BUT he does love his cornbread and syrup.
  9. Bini, do you wear make-up and perfume/scent? She may not like it. When my Aunt was living with us for a few months, her newborn wouldn't go to her when she had make up, hair spray and perfume on. BUT when my Mom, or one of my siblings held the baby, she calmed down. We didn't wear make up, hair spray or perfumes. Mom was real sensitive to them. Once my Aunt took her bath and was in her robe, her baby liked her. All of my Aunts kids loved my Dad. Us kids did too. Not only was he gentle and loving, he smelled great! Clean clothes and just the slightest hint of Bay Rum & Glycerin. Also, have you tried calming yourself as you hold her by singing or humming hymns? Get the CD's put them on, volumn on soft, and listen and sing and hum along during YOUR waking hours. Get the Children's Song Book CD's and sing along. It works in Nursery at Church.
  10. No laugh button because you posted in Advice- all it offers is Thanks. That is why I do cookies. And I make them small- goes farther. My older sister buys gifting tins at the Dollar Store, me I go to Cash-n-Carry and get the to-go boxes.
  11. In the US, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, does NOT recognize common law as legal and binding.
  12. How are you at cookie making? I do drop cookies pretty well. Oatmeal w/cinnamon & raisin. Oatmeal cinnamon w/chocolate chips, sugar, old fashioned molasses, etc. I have a 1 teaspoon size cookie scoop- so my cookies are that size. Quit doing roll them & cut 'em out! Way too time extensive! Even do Ginger cookies that way- Sorry Pam, I refuse to roll and cut!! Paper plates, colored Reynolds plastic wrap and contrasting ribbon. Each person gets three or four cookies. Remember you are not furnishing their personal Christmas party! Last year we got fondant, fudge, peanut brittle. I would have preferred a tin of Danish Cookies! The fondant and fudge were very grainy and the peanut brittle didn't have much peanuts. Any hoo- do cookies. You don't have to stand over the stove and stir the dang stuff. Just don't let them cook too long. If you don't like the paper plate delivery system, then buy to-go boxes at the Dollar store or Cash -n-Carry/ Smart-n-Final store. One year I made Poppy Seed; Carrot; and Cranberry Breads - Baked them in the small aluminum pans and wrapped like a package in colored plastic wrap and topped with a mini bow (purchased at the Dollar Store). For every 2 people, I gave one loaf of bread. For my VTeacher I included a cube of real butter AND a tub of speadable cream cheese. Here in Oregon, those breads were my signature Christmas gift to the Sisters I visit taught. Might just have to resurrect that tradition once again - - -IF I can find my recipes.
  13. Most generators are gas powered. If you put the generator on your balcony, then that might work. If the storage area you are allotted is clean, dry and secure it would work. The smallest form? 3 days. Family Home Storage this link is to Provident Living. You can also talk with your Ward/Branch Preparedness/Emergency person. At our Branch, that is one of the RS sisters. Personally, I have a 6+ month food storage. But I also have personal hygiene, and laundry soap, etc. stored. When husband and I moved from Arizona the neighbor men who we hired to load our truck laughed when they saw how much tpaper and ptowels there was. There were 2 retail cases of ptowels (48 in each) and 20 pkgs of 12 dbl rolls of tpaper. I bought the tp when it was on sale for $4.99 & $5.99 a pkg. The brand I get is Northern or MD. Here in Oregon, I buy Fred Meyer brand- get 24 rolls of the dbl size for $6.99- and it is better quality than Northern. Bath soap I buy at at Costco. I give the money to one of the sisters at Church when she goes- The only brand I refuse to use is Ivory. I want the 8 packs. It has been sooooo long since I bought any- like back in 2009- got it at the Costco in Seattle. Any way, I remove the packaging and place the bars in baskets or decorative boxes and put them in my clothes and linen closets. That dries them out, and they last longer in the shower. Just a little more than twice as long. I also buy shampoo in the largest container for the cheapest price I can get. Then I mix the 'El Cheapo shampoo with Jhirmack shampoo. One bottle of cheap, one bottle of Jhirmack and one Jhirmack bottle of water. I have silvery grey hair, and Jhirmack keeps it bright. But straight Jhirmack is too much- my scalp is sensitive to it full strength. When I moved into this house, the previous owner left a bottle of Aussie shampoo in a pump bottle here. Brand new, never used. I love the pump bottle- so I mixed my Jhirmack concoction and refill the pump bottle. I keep my mix in 2 ltr. soda bottles in the linen cupboard. There have been several other threads in this forum. Use Search and put in food storage and you should get quite a few hits.
  14. Oh, I don't know about that- they get more cunning and devious with using the shrilly voice. The older they get, the more they learn how to manipulate and use the shrill. My youngest sister uses her voice like a well honed weapon. I refuse to be in the same house as her- with or without hearing aids her voice cuts through me and hurts, really hurts my ears and head. I always expect to have blood running out my ears, nose and eyes when she gets on a verbal tangent. When Mom and Dad were still alive, they were constantly telling her to modulate her voice, sounding like a Shrew is not an admirable goal. If my voice changed at puberty Dravin, then why when I answer the phone, those who aren't that familiar with me ask if my Grandmother is home?
  15. They are no longer on ebay-
  16. Dahlia, I had to battle for months to get my blessing. Cars breaking down, the Patriarch rescheduling because of emergency surgery on his eyes and then coming down with an infection that landed him back in the hospital. I was bombarded by the adversary from so many different avenues. I got sick- my boss got super antagonistic toward me(that one threw me for quite a loop- she was my mentor and was grooming me to take over her business one day). Changing my requested day off so I had to reschedule. Finally, four months after my first call to the Patriarch to set a date, I make it to the Stake building, the Patriarch and his wife are there, I am still battling the lingering cold (ears gurgling, nose running, but I am not running a fever and the Dr has assured me I am not contagious). The Patriarch puts his hands on my head and I feel FOUR hands, I am so overwhelmed with the spirit of the Holy Ghost and of the Patriarchs spirituality. The only thing I am thinking that is NOT Christ like right then is I sort of wish I had waited until my divorce was final so my maiden name would have been used. Oh well, this is the Lord's timing and I am not going to let a minor thing like my surname get the better of me. I really didn't remember much of what he said. His voice was rich and it resonated through me. The small room we were in was filled floor to ceiling and wall to wall with happy spirits. My girlfriend who drove me there was with me, and she agreed that the room was full. We can only speculate that my ancestors (Grands I call them), and Witnessing Angels as well as the Holy Ghost were in attendance. I had to wait until my blessing came in the mail. At first it seemed generic- and I felt a bit let down. No sooner had I thought that, then I went to my journal and read what I had written on the drive home- my feelings, thoughts and hopes. Every single time I read my blessing, I find something new. New meaning, new feelings, new understanding. When my divorce was finalized, I re-read my blessing. When I was fired, I turned to my blessing for comfort. When my now husband proposed to me, I again pulled out my blessing and re-read it. When my oldest sister died, as my husband held me in his arms, together we read my blessing, and as always it brought me great comfort. As time goes on and you are stumbling against the roadblocks that the adversary slams at you. As you rejoice in spiritual landmarks and conquests- your Patriarchal Blessing will comfort you, buoy you up and strengthen you. Mine is only a page and a half- sometimes I don't get past - - -You Are A Beloved Daughter Of God - - - Sometimes I absorb the entire thing. Feeling God's arms around me, feeling the presence of Ministering Angels. There is a LOT packed into those words, And BETWEEN all those words.
  17. So then, why don't more members of the Church follow in his footsteps and cease with the political correct nonsense???
  18. That is the strangest jazz music I have ever heard. The original was sung by Frankie Lane, and it is Country Western.
  19. For 8.5 years I worked at the True Value Hardware store here in town. The owner, (Woman over 70, she had owned the store for 20 yrs before I went to work there) had a policy that we employees answer the phone BEFORE the third ring. If we could not fully help the phone customer, then we transferred the call to her. She also had a store policy: If I don't have it, and can not find a distributor selling it, then you just do not need it. In Other Words, she went above and beyond to find the item you needed. On these special orders, she never took any payment before hand. She sold the business and the new owner did away with all of her Customer Service policies. I only stayed for one month- I got so tired of the customers complaining to me and demanding to know what the HADES was going on. Rather than tell them my personal thoughts and opinions, I referred them to the new owner. He was real big on having us page him to come to the front to supervise the distributors and salesmen, so I paged him to the front habitually to answer to the complaining customers. The previous owner had given me a print out of all of the In House Credit customers, showing their buying history and their payment history. Because of his piss-poor customer service attitude he lost each and every one of them. 120 clients, including the Oregon State Forestry Service, Road Dept,, Sheriff's Dept., and every contractor-electrician, plumber, etc. in Lincoln County OR. After I left, it took nearly a year for these very unhappy customers to finally quit cornering me at the post office, super markets, and restaurants, demanding to know why she (the previous owner) sold to him. She sold to him because he paid her asking price. One of her policies regarding unhappy customers: Be pleasant, be polite, be firm - tell the customer that you do not have the authority, but you will get some one who does. If the boss is not on the premises- then you make an appointment for them to see her the following day at THEIR earliest convenience. She was at the store at 6 AM EVERY day- so they could meet with her from 6 AM until 8 PM. When is it okay to give in? For you the employee who has NOT been given the authority to make such decisions - NEVER. ALWAYS refer them to your immediate supervisor. ALWAYS. Be pleasant, be polite and be firm. Oh, it is also extremely important that you be consistent! Believe me, customers talk to each other.
  20. One of our members lives on the outer most edge of the area. It is a 45 minute drive for them. They could have requested to go to the ward in the town that is just across the bridge from them, which would be a 30 minute drive- but they decided they liked our little branch better. Many, many years ago we had a widowed sister and her teen daughter that requested to be in our branch rather than in the ward in the town to the east of her. She was an hours drive from either meeting house. The drive to our Branch was much safer during the nasty winter weather.

    Flooring

I vote for the laminate too. We just bought a 1993 double wide manufactured home. We are the third owner. The carpet is original except in the 2 bedrooms bedrooms. The kitchen has indoor/outdoor carpeting. I absolutely hate it! Starting Oct 1st- all the refundable cans and bottle money is being saved to put tile down in the kitchen. I will do it myself if I have to!! Thankfully the laundry room and two bathrooms have vinyl flooring. Then in about 4 to 5 years, I want ALL the carpeting removed and Pergo installed. Or something similar to Pergo. Much easier to keep clean, no stains, no breeding spiders, fleas, & other bugs-n-germs, etc. Think your carpet is clean? Put on white socks and walk around your carpeted areas all day. Then take a good look at the socks. Go with laminate.
  22. We are having a "Light" dinner= Mini Pizzas, green salad, Soup, dessert. We will be taping the broadcast, then will watch it after dinner/socializing. Oh, and it is Sunday Dress. No jeans or sweats. We are starting at 5 PM- I am really looking forward to it.
  23. The Branch that I go to is about a 10 minute drive from my house. The geographical area it encompasses covers four towns! There is NO public transportation available. Your 5.1 miles WITH public transportation available is Good. We have many members who do not come every week because they can not afford the gas, or they don't have transportation. There are several of us who have informed the RS and Priesthood that we will gladly give rides to and from church on Sundays to those who want to come. We shall see what happens.
  24. I concur- couldn't finish either one. Shatner is awful- even in Star Trek he was awful, but the other actors carried him.
