Ward and Stake Business Conducted via Conference Call?
gabelpa replied to a topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
For one, you can pass pieces of paper around, especially hand-drawn notes. You also get more attention than if they have to deal with a child that won't go to bed, or the family pet videobombing the webcam. -
There's already a "sarcasm" punctuation mark out there, called the Irony Mark. Look it up on wikipedia. Another one to look up is the interrobang.

Depends on the publication. The more professional, the less I would want to see it. Twitter, facebook, blogs, maybe. Professional journals, novels, newspaper articles, no way. It also is one of the most unprofessional marks I have ever seen.

Ward and Stake Business Conducted via Conference Call?
gabelpa replied to a topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I see some merit to holding some meetings via conference call/internet telephony when conditions prohibit it, but not as a matter of course. There is a great value in meeting with others face to face. Personally, I believe that the cut and dry Priesthood business should be conducted in person, i.e. Bishopbric meetings, PEC. Auxiliary meetings, presidency meetings, perhaps those can be held by teleconference if circumstances demand it. -
Wow! If I could afford to live there, I would. It's a gorgeous plot of land. 2 hours is one heck of a trip to get to Church though. If you are able to tolerate the drive, and can afford the fuel, then I would go for it. Ignore Hemi. I think he's off his meds. The purchase of property is a decision to be taken up with study and prayer, but to exclude it for the reasons that Hemi cites, is lunacy.

Root beer renaissance: Old-time soda is back with a bang
gabelpa replied to KeithLBrown's topic in General Discussion
I haven't had grape soda in years, it's expensive to import into the UK, but my goodness, have we got some good Ginger Beers over here. I've been wanting to do up my own root beer, since it too is expensive to import here, and I just haven't found anywhere that sells it. I just haven't found all the ingredients, or a method of making it that doesn't make me uneasy. Any thoughts? -
The Kolob Theorem: A Mormon's View of God's Starry Universe
gabelpa replied to Hemidakota's topic in Book Club
From our vantage point, we can't see all the stars in our galaxy, as we look edge-on and our view is obscured. Our galaxy is forming new stars, and old ones are dying on a time scale that we can't comprehend. The stars are not infinite in number though, it is just not a number we are able to know with our current technology. Innumerable to man perhaps, but not infinite. The universe is not an infinite universe either. It is a finite thing with a fixed quantity of matter+energy. We can only guess at how much there is, the Hubble deep field pictures have shown that there is so much more out there than we may think, but when we look at the sky, we are looking at a graveyard. Most of what we see by way of distant galaxy, no longer exist as we see them. It has taken millions, even billions of years for that light to reach us. A lot can change in a billion years. -
eBook? Planning on buying an ebook reader soon and filling it up with stuff for me and the wife, and if available this sounds like it will be on the list.

The Kolob Theorem: A Mormon's View of God's Starry Universe
gabelpa replied to Hemidakota's topic in Book Club
Wel, I skimmed over the first 10 pages (excluding preface) or so of the PDF, and I don't like some of his restrictions and ideas. I haven't read all 9 pages worth of this thread, but the idea that heavenly Father is just this galaxy's God is not my understanding. I may read the rest when I get time, and give it more in-depth investigation, these are just my first impressions. I may be wrong, but I thought that all that exists in this Universe is our Heavenly Father's creation. There may be parallel universes for other Gods, or this may be the first time around, that is how I currently understand the Universe. -
I won't post the deep link, but if you google the first 2 or 3 lines of the OP, you find exactly where he has copied/pasted from. It's basically the publishers/author's blurb about the book, scattered everywhere the book is sold. Uninteresting, dull, and factually vacant with far too much artistic license I bet. Into Thin Air I believe was a rip-off of a much better story.

I think there is a lot to be told, and a lot that can be expanded upon. I haven't read any LDS style fiction or even nonfiction (excluding Std works, manuals, Church Published Literature, etc) for about 10 years, so I don't know about stagnation or that sort. There is always a market, and distribution does need to move into the 21st century. We're a decade in, how many LDS Authors publish ebooks, own a eReader, or have tried small-volume self-publication? I haven't been moving in the circles where I would be exposed to this sort of literature, is there a place where we as LDS can go to find reviews, commentary, social network?

If my understanding serves, you can't get a reccomend answering no to that particular question, and leaving things unresolved. I would bring things up with your Bishop if you are at all uncertain. This is especially true for unrepented of sexual sins, someone else who has been in a leadership position may offer more clarity, but you are better talking than not.

Sorry, not the place to vent frustrations. My bad.

Tell them to go away or you will phone the police and press charges. Either that, or keep a lot of BoM's around and give them to every JW that comes to your door. Don't negotiate or say you will do anything for them, just give them a Book of Mormon and slam the door.

Here is what I see in the USA. Erosions of some freedoms, but a Nation that iss till trying to hang on, and in some places, correct past mistakes. Anyone who thinks the USA has collapsed needs to look at a properly collapsed nation, where anarchy reigns, like Somalia... where all these pirates are coming from. If America had collapsed, there would be no infrastructure or rule of law. Think on that, i would say more but my thumbs are cramping up, typing on a thumb keybord is no fun.

First, find out what is available in the area you are willing to travel to. What martial art is right can quickly descend into flames. My personal reccomendation would be judo, but they may not start young enough.

None of those quoted scriptures uses the word "Trinity". Methinks a study of early Christian history is in order, as before the Council of Nicea, there were a good number of Unitarians, believing that God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit were three distinct individuals, one in purpose, thus being "one God" but three in spirit and body.

I know, but I am having a sick day from work, and I am already bored. LOL Don't expect to see a lot of useful contributions from me today.

I would go for neither, asuming youc an get a good deal on broadband. I am not encouraging copyright infringement, but there are plenty of legal content delivery sites, hulu, and catch up tv.

Current technologies for generating electricity from solar are very environmentally unfriendly. We don't have the technology yet to mass produce efficiet solar cells that do not have a high environmental impact. Yes, once they are made, they are ok, but it is the making of them that is the problem. It is still better to use solar hot water heating, and generate electricty via nuclear power.

Just curious, what is wrong with the single sisters in your area? I get the impression that you are not local to where you are attending school. Is this correct? Where I went to college, finding LDS people to date wasn't dificult but finding girls that would go out with me was another matter. Without knowing more about your expectations, I can't give any more decent advice.

The whole sealing thing, that's a bridge you can cross when you come to it, seeing as you aren't LDS and all. As far as anything else goes, the church's stance on morality stands whether you are 18 or 81, there is nothing there respective of age. Avoid temptation, etc.

Do you feel that dreams have real meaning?
gabelpa replied to theBUBBAMANcan's topic in General Discussion
Only you can answer that question through prayer and study. -
For me, it was the attempted cover-up that was the worst part of this all.

LM, I didn't know Mormons had two eyes! Amazing facts from the Godmakers! On another note, I seem to remeber the video oculd only be bought buy ministers for something ridiculous like $120 per VCR tape. Yeah, this was back in the day.
