dprh reacted to LDSGator in Remember when... "We just want equality"
Oh @pam dear, the amount of jokes I could make here. I deserve so much credit for my self control.

There are a few hymns we sing in church that my family likes to alter a little to make them more fun. Anyone else do that and are you willing to share? Here are some of ours
I am a Child of God
...has given me an earthly home with parents kind of weird
Choose the Right
Choose the Sprite when a Coke is placed before you
Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel
We all have work, let no one shark
Thirteenth Article of Faith
We believe in being honest, true, chased by elephants...
And my kids personal favorite
High on a Mountain top
...A badger chased a squirrel. But that's much better than the Elders chasing girls!

People ALWAYS speak in absolutes, but they NEVER really mean it.

Apparently the song was supposed to be a satire. It worked so well that people believed it, so it must have been good satire.

At least I've got a/c. The majority of people in the PNW couldn't say that during the temperature spree you had there.

Yes, I know you think it gets hot where you live, but let the voice of experience tell you what HOT means. I live in Redmond, Washington, where it was ONE HUNDRED AND...
Wait a minute. Did you say "Texas"?
Never mind.
This temperature snobbery is not nearly as much fun as people said it would be.

Aw, little missy, let me tell you a little something about heat. I live in Redmond, Washington, where just a couple of weeks ago it was one hundred and eight degrees. ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT DEGREES. You might complain about some little heat here or there, but let the voice of experience tell you that—
Wait a minute. Did you say Las Vegas? Like, Las Vegas, Nevada?
In August?
Never mind.

I will be in Vegas for the first full week of August for a convention. Definitely not looking forward to the heat.

I spent a week up at Big Bear in California a few years ago. We rented a cabin that had a jacuzzi right in the right. It was a lot of fun. Did horseback riding, visited local businesses and restaurants, played horse shoes and just had a week of total relaxation. The weather was perfect the entire time we were there.

We did Independence Day weekend in Big Bear Lake, CA. That was fun, our first time up there.
I just started a new job this week, so no vacation for me for 3 months My side of the family is having a reunion up at Bear Lake in UT (No relation to Big Bear). My wife is debating on going with the kids or not since I can't make it.
And just staying indoors as much as possible. Southern NV in the summer is 🔥

Well, if we accept the notion that subconscious bias is a real thing that happens to real people, it makes it only easier to distrust and suspect folks on the other sides of our fences. It used to be "they're not playing fair because they're bad", now it's also "they don't mean to not play fair, but it's happening anyway".
Well, it's what various other sides all think about us and our support for constitutions and rule of law and attempts to love our neighbors. Why shouldn't we think it about them too?
I'm disheartened. Gonna bolster myself with some Stendahl's rules of religious understanding. Works well for folks on the different sides of about any fences:
1. When you are trying to understand another religion, you should ask the adherents of that religion and not its enemies.
2. Don't compare your best to their worst.
3. Leave room for "holy envy." (By this Stendahl meant that you should be willing to recognize elements in the other religious tradition or faith that you admire and wish could, in some way, be reflected in your own religious tradition or faith.)

I just happened upon this today in the July 2021 Liahona: https://abn.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/liahona/2021/07/young-adults/3-church-history-questions-answered-by-elder-and-sister-rasband?lang=eng
Note the bold type within the article -- an interesting perspective in relation to this topic!

The bishop probably should have just asked a priest to say the blessing.

You do realize that for all else that happens on the Sabbath that just about everything else is not near as important or critical as the sacrament. That a congregation has to sit for an extra 5 seconds while renewing their sacred covenants may actually be the most efficient and spiritual thing that has happened in many wards for years.😉

I see more of what you're saying now. Sometimes while the sacrament is being passed, I want to get up and give a deacon or four directions on where to go to be more efficient.
