Oh, of course. There‘s no easy answer. I’ve seen the same thing happen. Once the enthusiasm wears off (and it did because the ward used him as a workhorse-he was the only one under 65) you’ve got someone with nothing to do and no meaningful connections.

I’ve always thought there’s a simple cure for low activity rates: be happy. It does not take great insight to grasp that people are seeking a happy place to be in this world. If we created an environment where people left happy, we’d have no issues with retention and activity.

Almost all religions are experiencing a decline in membership and activity rates. Everyone wants to think their religion is immune to this, and that’s fine, but it’s not true. Religions all across the board are struggling right now.

You aren’t alone my friend. One of the most faithful and Christ loving people I know in the church thinks exactly like you do. And I met her here on thirdhour. While there is still work to do, I truly believe the church is changing and in the next few years many of the things you are describing will be openly talked about and maybe even changed.

Everyone should be required to be a server for six months. You learn to deal with entitled people, obnoxious people, irritating people, flat out stupid people-and your only weapon is your smile and personality.

Those kind of jobs are unpleasant-no one says “I want to wait tables and clean garbage cans when I grow up.” But they teach valuable lessons. You work hard to get out of them so you don’t have to live your life working terrible jobs!

I had to wait tables and deliver pizzas to pay tuition too. It happens to all of us. And yes, my first college played games. Wretched place.

Did anyone who had a bad high school experience have a good college experience? That happened to me. I went to a small, Catholic college for two years and was miserable. Then I transferred to UNH and absolutely loved it. Graduated with honors too.

Be More Chill and DEH were two of the most intense musical experiences I have ever had due to that very reason.

Don’t sell yourself short bro. You’ve made musicals yourself. That requires a high level of knowledge and understanding of the craft.

Almost all of us can if we hit a persons weak spot or insecurities, which we all have. It’s also not something to brag about. I’d be much more impressed if you said you can heal someone with words-that’s a talent that actually takes skill. Being a jerk is easy.
