Boy could I comment on that. But I won't

The best calling I have ever had was when I was called to teach a class in a prison. Our Ward took over this duty when the previous Ward was combined with ours. The previous Ward had not sent anyone in close to a year. 3 LDS prisoners kept the class going during that time. They were extremely pleased to have me there and we had many investigators during the year+ that I lived in the Ward. If there is no Ward person coming in, you can talk to the Chaplin about contacting the local Bishop - or the main Church office in SLC. It did take about 2 months for all the approvals to go through for me to be able to get in. But it was so worth it.

Anyone here who has received their temple endowments?
mnn727 replied to Sourgirl's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I almost left the Church after my endowment - why didn't I? because I knew everything else I had been taught was correct, so there must have been something I missed. Read all you can on gospel symbolism and go back, just experience it.- 35 replies

From my limited experience as a landlord, these are the number one qualities needed - and the reason we sold our rental.

In the October 1998 general conference, President Gordon B. Hinckley encouraged Latter-day Saints to get out of debt and live within their means: I am suggesting that the time has come to get our houses in order. So many of our people are living on the very edge of their income. In fact, some are living on borrowings. The economy is a fragile thing. . . There is a portent of stormy weather ahead to which we had better give heed. I hope we will never again see such a depression (as in 1932). But I am troubled by the huge consumer installment debt which hangs over the people of the nation, including our own people. I recognize that it may be necessary to borrow for a home, of course. But let us buy a home that we can afford and thus ease the payments which will constantly hang over our heads without mercy or respite for as long as 30 years. No one knows when emergencies will strike (and we could be) helpless before creditors. We are carrying a message of self-reliance throughout the Church. Self-reliance cannot be obtained when there is serious debt hanging over a household. One has neither independence nor freedom from bondage when he is obligated to others. . . I urge you to look to the condition of your finances. I urge you to be modest in your expenditures; discipline yourselves in your purchases to avoid debt to the extent possible. Pay off debt as quickly as you can, and free yourselves from bondage. (Gordon B. Hinckley, Ensign, Nov. 1998.)

I've always had a rule, the total of all bills could not exceed 1/2 of our take home income. What happens if one of you loses their job for any reason? Rentals don't stay rented and often cost you a lot of money in upkeep and repairs after a tenet moves out (not to mention insurance costs go up when you're personally not living in the house, if you homestead your taxes will jump also). I had a rental once - thank God I don't any more, too much of a headache. Some people do very well with rentals, some people don't. Regarding the 401K I lost 30% of my 401K value 10 years ago, I am now back up over what I lost by a significant amount. Investments are for the long term. If you can't out wait a downturn in the market then you should not be in it. The market has always gone up in the long term, although it does frequently down turn for period of time.

Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days........

You are actually very correct there, to hate someone (or to think you are better than someone) due to their appearance is the only sin in this whole discussion.

So, due to the way his parents are raising him, you would not let your kids be friends and perhaps expose him to healthier habits?

Yes, my opinion is you are much too concerned about other peoples weight. Perhaps you should worry more about your shortcomings and less about what others shortcomings are.

He's right, however, what difference does it make?

Are more people leaving the church than joining?
mnn727 replied to pk55847's topic in General Discussion
6 million? this had to be a couple decades back. -
That's really not true, while they have the ability to preform ordinances, they probably don't have the authority to do so.

What Professional Sports Games Have You Been To?

Does professional wrestling count? -
Because dirty old men run the entertainment industry and dirty old men like looking at nude young women.

Used to be a phobia, but no more. I prefer smaller groups 10 - 25 but 200+ doesn't bother me. In small groups I make eye contact, large groups I just look 'out there'. LDS have an advantage over other groups as we start giving talks in front of the entire Ward as Young Men and Women, as an adult convert I had a bit of a culture change but I'm fine with it now.

It means to respect her, to treat her as an equal, to never dismiss her feelings or what she says, and hug her when she needs it.

Need vrs want. How about you go without for a while and save up as much of a down payment or even the full amount of a car that you can? Yes, shopping will be difficult, but how much shopping do you do? Use a back pack to carry groceries. Temple attendance - if a ward member is going why not bring you along? I'm not saying go forever, but go as long as you can and save money for a car.

I am Catholic, married to a Mormon
mnn727 replied to August's topic in Marriage and Relationship Advice
From personal experience that is 100% incorrect. -
We looked at over 100 houses before buying this one, drove our realtor nuts, she retired shortly afterwards.

new vs old - which is better?
mnn727 replied to searching_questioner's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I've thought so for a couple years, but we can read those inspirational message online in the General Conf. section of LDS.org. We also have the teachings of the Presidents of the Church. -
We have people in our ward with differently colored hair. Have not noticed anyone treating them any differently. On a silly side note, I have no clue what my wife's original hair color is -- she's colored it since before we met - nothing wild. I suppose if you get right down to it, its grey now, but what was it 30 years ago???

No dear, the dress does not make you look fat.

That can not possibly be true, Col Sanders is dead, how could he be putting something in his chicken? .

Around here it's prime BBQ season, so..... a nice salad, a couple of steaks, maybe some roasted corn.. a restaurant just can't compare. Have we ever gone out to eat on a Sunday since we converted? Yes, on special occasions but its the exception rather than the rule. Part (Much?)of the Gospel is about agency. You know the principles, now you decide to what degree you will follow them remembering that blessings come through obedience.
