  1. Wow! I'm amazed that this thread has stirred up some controversy already!! Perhaps I shouldn't be tho. I know that Elphaba doesn't have an agenda to lead any LDS member off to another cause. I know that Elphaba is most concerned that LDS Church History is documented correctly, backed up by references. The title of this thread is not exactly misleading...the OP explains the background to where Ephaba's and Kosher's debate re: Church History began, it began in a thread already devoted to the FLDS..therefore the FLDS needed to be mentioned in the OP. Elphaba explained the origin of the thread and the reason that she was making this separate thread, in order to not take the original FLDS thread off at a tangent. Please don't be so suspicious, okay Elphaba may have been slightly off course when she suggested that the FLDS were Mormons, in spite of what the 1st Presidency said on the matter, but I suppose she was just suggesting that this is another group of Mormons which state that they have the correct idea rather than the standard SLC LDS do.. Anyway, I hope that this little upset doesn't lead to any banning on the site.
  2. Both sites look interesting, have added them to my faves :)
  3. LOL Pale! I know what you mean..we have a Missionary from Devon up here at the mo. and all sorts of people keep thinking he's from the US..his voice is quite soft..his companion is from Sth Africa and sounds a little like he's from the US too..my mum made me laugh when she thought one of the Elders from Sweden was American..the 2nd time she met him...she insisted it wasn't a European accent, he was American, lol!
  4. It always amazes me when somebody thinks that a Missionary from the UK is American because of their accent...
  5. Wow! That was powerful and beautiful and has brought me to tears. It's Father's Day here in the UK on 15th June and I've been asked to speak about my father, I would have loved to have read your poem that day, but I'm afraid I would cry again... Thank you for sharing your words..
  6. MENTAL HEALTH ALERT...MENTAL HEALTH ALERT...MENTAL HEALTH ALERT... DOOM AND GLOOM THREAD...DOOM AND GLOOM THREAD...DOOM AND GLOOM THREAD...
  7. In the UK, the sex education classes that teenagers have at school do not encourage sex outside of marriage, but they do provide valuable information and contraception for those teens that they know are already practising unsafe sex. They are being responsible by recognising that those teens who are going to have sex before marriage at least need to know that they can be protected, and know the correct way to be so...
  8. You had to pay to take the online test in the link provided so I googled and found this site Free Online ADD Test, Free ADHD Test Online Don't know if it's reputable or not, I scored 35/90 which I thought was low, but it said many of my answers indicated possible ADHD symptoms and advised that I seek further advice from a doctor...(Don't know what the results are for others, would be good to compare perhaps?) Btw, I don't think that I have ADD or ADHD and it was difficult to answer some of the questions in a simple 'yes' or 'no' format, for me anyway, lol! Just thought I'd add another free online test for comparison...the site seems genuine (apart from the blatant plug for medications), and the list of possible symptoms of ADD/ADHD is exhaustive... Attention Deficit Disorder Test / ADHD Test
  9. Thanks for the insight on ADHD in these posts...I must admit to having been a little confused about the use of caffeine in the treatment of the condition, as I'd always just thought that ADHD meant a child was hyperactive and therefore caffeine would just increase the hyperactivity, thanks for proving me wrong :)
  10. Hmm..a little like being a mature student at our local college...
  11. Eeeek!! Oh No...Another doom and gloom website for me to get obsessive about, thanks guys!
  12. LOL everybody..I've struggled with my hearing since I had a boil in my ear, aged 11...I know how difficult it is to concentrate on what somebody is saying if there is the least bit of disturbance going on around you... Bring on the typing jokes, they're superb!! LOL :)
  13. Pale, I think I saw the manuals in the Church Distribution Centre a few weeks ago, I will see what information I get back from the person in charge of the programme in our Stake, and will consider buying the manuals if I'm either too old to attend or if the classes are too far out for me to attend..I've since heard that they run a class at the Stake centre itself on a Thursday evening, so possibly there will be local members attending there who I could travel with.
  14. Thanks for the information Hemi and Aphrodite. It appears that classes during term time are held at 8am on Tuesdays, in Preston, for our stake..It would mean travelling very early in the morning for me to arrive there on time, but could be an interesting way to pass the day, and I would like to attend formal classes where I can study the Scriptures in more detail, it would be more motivation for me to study.. I will ask the Bishop about it on Sunday, as suggested.
  15. Can somebody tell me more about this Institute class, please? Is it a church programme available to members all over the world? Is it another name for Seminary, or a similar programme aimed at older people? Anything else?
  16. Misshalfway, you said almost the same as I was going to say. I wasn't disturbed by Oprah's comments either, at the end of her segment of the video she asked what would happen to those who lived Christlike lives but lived in a remote part of the world and so never heard of Jesus Christ...that wasn't an offensive question or statement, it was inviting a debate from various religious beliefs.. The youtube video is sensationalist and silly, IMO :)
  17. I'm pleased to hear that you've found happiness since returning to the church, and hope that you continue to do so... Whatever the reason your quad was returned to you, I think the way that you responded to that event was the test..and whether you found happiness in whichever decision you made..
  18. The great suggestions just keep flowing! Moksha...figure of 8 with the mouse! ROFL!! :)
  19. I used to do a mean headbang when I was 17, but now I just softly sway :)
  20. Hi Heather, nice to meet you :) I'm currently busy researching my family history, and can't wait for the opportunity to do the work for some of my ancestors..some of the research is quite difficult when you have ancestors with very common names, but I'm perservering. Hope you enjoy your time at the site :)
  21. Aphrodite has just given you, perhaps, the best advice you could get anywhere!! Last year I joined a free online website for diet/exercise, Free Diet Plans at SparkPeople While I was following their suggested menu plans, which were designed according to your lifestyle/current health etc. for instance different dietary needs such as vegetarian, and were designed so that you received the correct % of fats, carbs, sugars etc. I did lose quite a bit of weight. There are exercises which you can print off and do at home, there are daily emails you can receive with encouraging articles, there's a message board and a place to mark your progress not only in lbs lost but in inches lost too...this is definitely a lifestyle altering website rather than a quick fix...try it, I'm sure you'll like it :) The only reason I didn't stay with that website was because I'm in the UK and couldn't always find the foods that were listed because they were aimed at a USA audience, also some of the measurements from the US are different from the UK. I've recently joined the Rosemary Conley Diet and Exercise online website, which I do pay for, it has many of the same features as Spark People and approaches diet in the same way too..I've only been on it a few weeks, and have lost 7lbs up to now, but I hadn't been following the meal plans correctly all the time, due to the stress of having work done on my house for the past 6 weeks, and I wasn't exercising. I've now joined a gym, been twice this week, and intend to go 3 times a week to begin with, and to increase to adding more exercise/walking on other days of the week as I begin to get back into shape. One thing I must stress is appreciate every 1lb that you lose in weight...it all counts :) Good Luck, let us know how you get on..
  22. Willow, can you give us an update on this? Did your daughter manage to attend the dance in the end?
  23. Eeek, I'm very sorry to hear of your boyfriend's reaction to your interest in the LDS church now. I don't have very good advice, unfortunately, but I can empathise with you over this matter as I was placed in the same position with my boyfriend when I was 18 and old enough to join the church without my parents' permission. Unfortunately I wasn't strong enough to stop having relations with my boyfriend and stopped attending the church instead. I did mention to him that I would stop having relations with him once I was Baptised and that is when he told me what a hypocrite I was, sleeping with him while still attending church...he was quite persuasive in his argument, also saying that if we ever got married he wouldn't allow our children to go to the LDS church...we did get married, 6 1/2 years later, had 2 children, then divorced 11 years after that...oh well, here I am back at church now...
