Not currently. I do not know about 13 years ago, but it seems the bishop permitted it. I think that if the father questioned it, he should have discussed the matter with the bishop first. That might have allowed him time to think twice about confronting his son about it.

A question was recently asked on Quora, why wasn't the name of the brother of Jared given in the Book of Mormon.  There are the usual explanations, but I thought you may find this  response interesting.

I would like to add another possibility.
Jared was the leader of he group, so that Mahonri was actually called by the people “the brother of Jared”. It was his common name == something like Big Charles and Little Charles, and, in this case, Jared and The Brother of Jared.
Thus, “the” should have been capitalized as part of his common name (nickname). So his name was actually given to us.

I have an idea.  Get their phone number and call them.  After the call, just forget the number!!!!!!!
Shred anything that has their number on it.  Use a throw away phone to make the call and then shred it.

I missed that one, you are correct based on good evidence.  For example,
DC 138 56 Even before they were born, they, with many others, received their first lessons in the world of spirits and were prepared to come forth in the due time of the Lord to labor in his vineyard for the salvation of the souls of men.
57 I beheld that the faithful elders of this dispensation, when they depart from mortal life, continue their labors in the preaching of the gospel of repentance and redemption, through the sacrifice of the Only Begotten Son of God, among those who are in darkness and under the bondage of sin in the great world of the spirits of the dead.

I am aware of two activities:
    1. Missionary work to prepare spirits for the temple ordinances.
    2. While the temple work is primarily done on earth, there certain tasks in the spirit word as well, such as making a record of the ordinances.  A sealer told us that, while he was performing sealings,  he viewed a recorder on the other side --the recorder whispered to the sealer, "Please slow down,"
There are also accounts of participants on the other side observing their ordinances being performed.

I had a dream that I was in Paradise.  We had to perform tasks to help us develop our character and I had been assigned class in humility. (true story)
"You have twenty tasks to complete in our very basic class in humility."
He then took me to a world that was still in the fifth day of creation, and pointed out a large area near the seacoast.
"You will observe everything that goes on in this area (several hundred square miles) and every day (thousand years) you will give a complete report on your area. This is your stewardship until you are ready for the next assignment."  I had the feeling that, in my case, this may take one hundred thousand years or so to complete. and this was only the first of twenty.
I thought how I should have learned this while I was still in mortality.  And what else was I going to have to lean.

    RESPONSE

Mormons denied the priesthood to blacks. And the Southern Baptists owned blacks as slaves.

---This is old news. Blacks can hold the priesthood and they serve in leadership positions in the church. The Baptists no longer own slaves.

It's time to move on for everyone instead of wallowing in the pit of recrimination and hate speech.

I'm not a Mormon. At best, I'm a struggling non-denominational Christian. I'm also a person who has done something many non-Mormons won't do.
I have always heard so many negative things about Mormons and the LDS. Horrible things that made want to stay clear of Mormons. All my life, childhood, adulthood, in and out church, from everyone including fellow Christian's. Horrible things said about Mormons.
One day, servings at my now old church, I had a fellow Christian make a negative remark about Mormons. One remark too many for me to accept. So I asked him, what proof do you have to back up your remark? He struggled, but failed to give any proof. His remarks was based on ignorance and social impressed impression/social acceptence. That was not okay. Facts from learning he failed to have.
So this got me thinking that day about what the truth was about Mormons and the howdo I find out. Well, it was days after that some missionaries came to my door. I saw opportunity and it just knocked on my front door. It was this moment where I knew a journey for me was starting.
I talked to the missionaries and invested time to learn about Mormons and the LDS. Without any judgement, I gave my desires to learn the truth. Want to know what I learned? ...
First, there are endless lies constantly being told about Mormons and the LDS Church. Out of ignorance and other motivated reasons, people tell lies about Mormons. Oh my goodness, the lies I always heard. Misinformed andmisundertood because it is easier to tell a lie than to take out the time to learn the truth.
Mormons are good hearted people has a strong sense of family. A sense of family that is stronger than any I've seen from any other faith. A sense of family that can not be compared or equal to any other faith. I was super amaze.
I've learned alot about Mormons and the LDS Church. I have more learning to do and I'm not a Mormon, but find myself defending the Mormon faith with an open mind against the lies and insults I hear constantly.
No, I'm not a Mormon but I will defend thier faith when I hear lies and insults others say. Why? Cause I have learned the truth about Mormons and the LDS Church and I will not accept anything but the truth.
Mormons are good people and always welcome in my life and home.
I have more to learn, but I am getting with missionaries. We'll see where my journey goes from hear.
Don't need to be a Mormon to like them.

cdowis got a reaction from Blackmarch in Why have many people left the Church after reading false things?
This is a typical mixture of truth and misinformation.  The church never said that the witnesses "never saw the plates", and your friend thinks that people will trust him and not check him out.
The other popular technique is to "summarize" what someone says.  "BY said that there are people living on the moon and on the sun."  He did not say that.
"JS was arrested 42 times according to wiki".  They forget to mention that he was not convicted.
"JS was convicted as a con man."  The records contract themselves on whether he was convicted ( as a disorderly person).
"JS practiced lah blah blah".  Paul threw Christians into prison, and participated in the stoning death of Stephen.
The church leaders get a six figure income.  (gives the impression of enormous sums of money)

Perhaps loyalty and devotion to wife and family can supplant romantic passion.  Such a notion is impossible to conceive in our world of abject selfishness, to those who seek the "flavor of the month", or see it as trading in the old model for the new one.
