Moksha Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Here is an open ended hypothetical question that is always interesting:What would be your religious choice of affiliation if you were not Mormon? Remember, giving an honest answer does not commit you to joining another group and simply saying you cannot conceive of not being a Mormon is unhelpful since this is only a hypothetical question.:) Quote
Elgama Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 ooh crumbs so much to choose from i see value in being an Orthodox Jew, there are aspects of Islam I love, Paganism, Hinduism, I use a lot of Buddhism anyway in my LDS worship. I don't know I love so many religions actually what I appreciate about being LDS is being able to incorporate elements of worship and belief from all the religions I love and want to follow Quote
applepansy Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 If I couldn't be Mormon??? I would assume that would be because the gospel had not been restored So...I'd wait until it was. I'd be Christian. Quote
john doe Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 If Mormonism is proven false, then no Christian religion would be acceptable. I would probably end up being unaffiliated, possibly believing bits and pieces of many religions and going my own way. That is probably a different answer than if my ancestors had not converted to the LDS Church. If that were the case, I likely would be a beer-swilling Scotsman belonging to whatever protestant church my forebears belonged to. Quote
annamaureen Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 (edited) Catholicism has always interested me. My parents converted to the church when I was three so if they hadn't, I probably would've been raised Catholic. However, if suddenly the church was "proved false" or I stopped believing, I don't think I could go to any other church. Edited May 27, 2010 by annamaureen Quote
pam Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Honestly I'd probably belong to one of the many non demoninational churches out there that has great music during their meetings. Quote
Bini Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Probably Buddhism. I like their philosophy towards animals: not to harm, kill or eat. Quote
bytor2112 Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Atheist or Agnostic......just wouldn't care. Although I like the whole crossing yourself with the Catholics and having cocktails with your Priest can't be all bad! Quote

Isn't it nice to know you're both your first choice AND second choice simultaneously? Quote
Dravin Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 LDS "Proven" False or I never reactivated: I'd probably go agnostic or a confessed generic Christian who lived like an agnostic. Actually, if I wasn't raised LDS I'd probably be similar to the above. If we want to go the hereditary route, what would my Mother's Swedish ancestry have most likely left me a member of? I'm assuming a protestant church of some sort. Quote
Guest mormonmusic Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 I'd pray and figure out where God wanted me, and I'd be that. Quote
john doe Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Probably Buddhism. I like their philosophy towards animals: not to harm, kill or eat.Buddhists don't eat animals? Then who eats all the Kobe Beef? Quote
Guest Godless Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Buddhists don't eat animals? Then who eats all the Kobe Beef?Rich Americans. Quote
carlimac Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 (edited) Hmm...Amish? I love their simple lifestyle but their 3 hour church services would be brutal (Oh wait...3 hour meetings? Sounds familiar) I guess I would probably do some kind of independent worship as I spent oodles of time out in nature. I'd pray to the God of the mountains and trees and sun and clouds and flowers. I'd visit a cathedral now and then with beautiful architecture and awesome acoustics with interesting light patterns coming through stained glass windows. I'd never dress up on Sundays. I'm sure I'd be a coffee or tea drinker and probably an alcoholic so it's a good thing I'm LDS. Edited May 27, 2010 by carlimac Quote

prisonchaplain Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 I think I'd join the Assemblies of God...might even become one of their clergy. Quote
Guest Godless Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 I'm pretty sure I'd be an atheist. Quote
Guest xforeverxmetalx Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Agnostic or general Christian... I probably wouldn't go to any particular church but just believe on my own. Quote
bl8tant Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 I'd go back to worshiping at the altar of televised sports, trips to Home Depot, and yardwork. Quote
RanMan Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 I think this is a tough one for me to answer. If there was no chance to learn as an LDS what I've learned, I'm not sure how that would shape my understanding of Christianity. So who knows where I might be. However, the truth is that I have problems with the doctrines presented by all of the non-LDS christian churches I've encountered. So probably I would be a home-study Christian, believing in Christ but thinking that worship can be done in my heart, at home. :) Quote

(I assumed you were, that's why I laughed at your post). If you are, what would you be if you weren't part of Assemblies of God? Quote
FairChild Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 If I weren't Mormon, what would I be? In a world of trouble. That's all. Quote
