What are your favorite doctrinal lines found in hymns we sing at church and why? Both primary and congregational, "deep" or Inspirational.

Some of my favorites:

"Sacrifice brings forth the blessings of heaven."
-
Praise to the Man

"Brightly beams our Father’s mercy
       From his lighthouse evermore,
       But to
us, he gives the keeping
       Of the lights along the shore.
       Let the lower lights be burning;
       Send a gleam across the wave.
       Some poor fainting, struggling seaman
       You may rescue, you may save."
-
Brightly Beams our father's Mercy

"Hell's foundation quivers at the shout of praise."
- Onward Christian Soldiers

"Temptations lose their power When thou art nigh"
- I need thee every hour

Father, Mother, may I meet you
In your royal courts on high?
Then, at length, when I've completed
All you sent me forth to do,
With your mutual approbation
Let me come and dwell with you.
 - Oh, My Father

Why: So rare to have Mother in Heaven mentioned or included

Praise to the man - one of the few hymns that get my blood pumping.  The doctrinal surety that the work is not done at death, that we will see our loved ones again.

Lead, Kindly Light - I discovered this one only a short while ago, and have been ticked off ever since.  Church, y u no play this to me for 40 years?  I need all the reminding I can get that even a sinner like me has a path to walk, lit by a kindly light.

Abide with me, Tis Eventide - because apparently I like tearing up all the time.  Finding a way to welcome the blanket of the ending of life - I mean, a scripture escapes me, but there's probably half a dozen general conference talks that address the issue.

I absolutely love the Hie To Kolob Dubstep remix.  The only problem is, it hasn't been created yet.  This is the closest I have, and it's waaay too technopoppy with an unforgivable dearth of bass.  Come on musicians - you don't even need to be LDS to want this one.  The notion that there is no end to increase is poorly understood, but I think this song understands it pretty well.

Oh- and of course, it's hard to find a single sung verse in this song that isn't a mini-doctrinal discourse on the life of Jesus:

I don't know if the LDS use this hymn by John E. Bode (or even if the sentiments would be agreed with) but:

Oh, let me feel Thee near me;
  The world is ever near;
I see the sights that dazzle,
  The tempting sounds I hear;
My foes are ever near me,
  Around me and within;
But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer,
  And shield my soul from sin.

(Often the worst foes are the ones "within".)

"He lives--and I shall conquer death".

Anywhere outside of a church, this would immediately be dismissed as the words of a crazy person.  And yet . . .

Also:

"Change and decay, in all around I see.

O, thou who changest not--abide with me!"

  1. 1. High on the mountain top
    A banner is unfurled.
    Ye nations, now look up;
    It waves to all the world.
    In Deseret's sweet, peaceful land,
    On Zion's mount behold it stand!
  2. 2. For God remembers still
    His promise made of old
    That he on Zion's hill
    Truth's standard would unfold!
    Her light should there attract the gaze
    Of all the world in latter days.
  3. 3. His house shall there be reared,
    His glory to display,
    And people shall be heard
    In distant lands to say:
    We'll now go up and serve the Lord,
    Obey his truth, and learn his word.
  4. 4. For there we shall be taught
    The law that will go forth,
    With truth and wisdom fraught,
    To govern all the earth.
    Forever there his ways we'll tread,
    And save ourselves with all our dead.
