I read somewhere that mormonhub.com changed it’s name to thirdhour.org because some of the public thought the former address meant it was a site to find Mormon husbands and hookups. Is that true?

If not, why the name change? And what does third hour even mean?

I’m sure this was already addressed somewhere else, but I haven’t been able to find it.

Not remotely true.

The reason for the name change was to stress that we aren't Mormon's disciples, but Christ's.  It's been a big push throughout the Church via President Nelson & revelation.

So, we as a forum talked about it and decided to step away from the name "Mormonhub" and we picked a new name.  The name "Third Hour" requires a little bit of background: LDS church has for the last 30+ years been a three hour block of time every Sunday.   This three hour time block was divided into various three hour-long classes, so people would ask things like "what class will you be in for second hour?  Or, do you have time to chat during third hour?".      Now, starting in January the Church world-wide in only having 2 hours of Sunday Meetings.  So for us forum-dwellers, our "third hour" is now spent socializing / learning here on the forum.

Makes perfect sense. That’s creative making our time on this website the new “third hour.” I like that. Thanks

The Prophet told us to.

Maybe I was channeling my inner prophetic abilities when I wrote this post over a year ago.

Close. Women in the Church noticed how sexist our ward building were to have mothers lounges but nothing for their husbands, so they set up a digital space for us to congregate: mormonhub[bies].

Of course, created and ran by women, that means that they're constantly interjecting and telling us to behave and that we're not using it right and whatnot....

That is why we are now in charge of the mothers lounges. Ours is filled with flat screen TVs, video games, and soda fountainsz

This is part of why I think it is so interesting that FairMormon is keeping their name

The reasons they were given for keeping the name are "not part of the Church" and have a "different purpose" (apologetics mostly). Could this site have kept Mormonhub? This site is not part of the Church, so that is the same. FairMormon is about apologetics, where Mormonhub/ThirdHour is more of a social/newsish/Mormon Interest kind of site. Is that the kind of purpose that should not call itself "Mormon?"

I don't mean to overanalyze, but it seems to me that there is some "growing pains" as we try to figure out exactly how to deal with the nickname "Mormon". Pres. Nelson made some pretty strong statements about not using the nickname Mormon. If we are not careful, we'll fall back into Pres. Hinckley's "We would prefer not to be called 'Mormon', but we can make the best of a bad nickname and help it mean 'More Good'". I'm not entirely sure I know where we are going to end up in all of this.

I was a little slow to get with the program, but every time I think about it, it seems like the right thing to do.

I mean, it's so clearly laid out in the scriptures, it's just undeniable.  Christ is telling us, telling us why it's important, He's even reasoning with us to try to convince us why it's important.

Quote

Therefore, whatsoever ye shall do, ye shall do it in my name; therefore ye shall call the church in my name; and ye shall call upon the Father in my name that he will bless the church for my sake. And how be it my church save it be called in my name? For if a church be called in Moses’ name then it be Moses’ church; or if it be called in the name of a man then it be the church of a man; but if it be called in my name then it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel. Verily I say unto you, that ye are built upon my gospel; therefore ye shall call whatsoever things ye do call, in my name

I've spent 22 years doing things because I'm a Mormon.  It seems quite obvious that there was a problem with putting it that way.  I can handle a little awkwardness due to losing my handy shortcut.

I'm not a Mormon.  I'm a follower of Jesus Christ, a member of His restored church.  After I've said it the long way first, I'll shorten it to Church, and LDS.

Um, no.

I'm not sure that "the public" cares much about the name we have. I'm dying to know where you read this though.

No substitute shortcut was given?  We are strictly to say I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

I like this. Saying I'm a Mormon has always bothered me since it's misrepresentative.  This is why it's also my opinion that the Church should change the name "Book of Mormon."  It's not Mormon's book.  It's much more than that. And the naming of Book of Mormon led to the nickname Mormon in the first place...

Oh, I dunno if I go that far.  We have the book of Moses, book of Matthew, book of John, book of Acts, etc.  The Law and the Prophets.  An old testament, a new testament, and another testament.  All of them are about the Lord God, but written/assembled/compiled by this or that person.

Still, I’m rooting for “American Testament of Jesus Christ.”

Do yourself a favor.  Go to church.  Go to LDS.org.  Listen to the Prophet's words yourself.  How do you not know about this?
