  1. There is nothing wrong with having interests outside the church unless the interests are in conflict with Heavenly Father's commandments. Again, its the selfish vs selfless problem. True joy is only found when we serve others, starting with our families. I will never understand a mother who puts her own "needs" ahead of her children's needs.
  2. I agree with Windseeker that the inward seeking (selfishness) as opposed to outward seeking (selflessness) is a big contributing factor in the people I know who have left the church. I've never heard anyone say "I left the church because I am serving others". Usually there is a me/I component to their reason. Such as, the church isn't fulfilling my needs, the church asked to much of me, what's in it for me, etc. On of the GAs said that selfishness is the root of all sin. I think its the root of leaving the church too.
  3. Sounds fun! Enjoy!
  4. Read your scriptures. There are stories that will help you. Remember three things: 1- It's never bad to be obedient to parents and bishops. Even IF they are wrong, you will be blessed for being obedient. 2- The Lord is mindful of you. He knows you better than know yourself. 3- Trust the Lord! The process of turning in your papers to go on a mission is officially saying "I will serve wherever the Lord needs me." If I was in your shoes, I would be obedient and turn in my papers. Then fast and pray that I would be able to do all the Lord asks of me.
  5. The bold applies to us all. I will be interested in seeing how it applies to Harry Reid in the hereafter. I've known many Mormon Democrats. Some are middle of the road democrats just like there are middle of the road Mormon Republicans. I think why most Mormons vote republican is because we understand how important our Agency is. That's just my biased opinion. :) I have a neighbor who was raised in Germany during WWII. She joined the church many years ago when her children were young. She also lived in England. She moved to the States when her children were young. One day she said "A little socialism is a good thing." She is a very good Mormon! If anyone needs anything... and I mean Anyone and I mean Anything ... she will do all in her power to make sure it happens. She works tirelessly at living the gospel in a real way. Yet, she believes its ok to legislate away a little of our agency. Who is right? In our world Satan has become very strong in these last days. People who are living the gospel and treating everyone as Christ would don't need government and laws. But not all people are good, so we need government and laws. The balance of keeping society safe and free is one that has been something we've been trying to manage since Satan tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden. Without opposition in all things Heaven Father's plan for us to choose doesn't work.
  6. Stating truth isn't boastful. Unfortunately its hard to explain that to someone who doesn't want to believe. "A person convinced against there will is of the same opinion still." I agree that you need to understand why she feels the way she does before you can address any issues.
  7. I would want to know. Its important to keep children safe.
  8. I agree. You don't need to be a doormat. Sometimes its hard to distinguish between a real need and when someone just wants to take advantage. Saying no sometimes will help you start see where the real needs are. When we automatically say yes to everything we don't allow those we help to grow (this includes our children :) ). I don't ask for help very often. When I do its usually babysitting but that's not very often. I can't afford to pay one of the young women. I've tried to trade babysitting with a couple of the young mothers in the ward and that's helped, but every once in awhile I run into a day when I need a babysitter and I don't have money to pay someone. This Friday is one of those days.

  10. Was this part 2 of their population control plan?
  11. That they have to make a law bothers me. This is something we should just do. Even if our elderly parents are toxic we should find a way to take care of them.
  12. its ok to ask them to participate or leave. The nursery isn't a social party
  13. I have a hard time accepting help. Unfortunately, because of my stubbornness, Heavenly Father has given me some blessings/challenges . These blessings have made it impossible to do somethings on my own. I am physically unable to do everything anymore. What I've learned is that its important to learn to receive. We all have needs, especially those who say they don't. We are not being charitable ourselves when we refuse charitable service from those who want to help. But.... knowing doesn't make it easier. Also, because I can't do everything myself anymore I've had to learn patience. Note: Do not pray for patience.
  14. I'm glad you're feeling better about this Robb. I noticed that "distant relative" was used a lot in describing. Isn't it possible that whomever did the ordinances was just as close a relative to your great grandfather as you are? Unless, your great grandfather only had one child, who only had one child, who only had one child, etc., then there is likely another great grandchild who might have found the gospel. I understand being upset. It's hard for family who aren't members to find something has happened they don't agree with and its hard for family members who want to do the work themselves. Its important to remember we are all one family, the family of Heavenly Father.
  15. As I was browsing this morning around the internet I found the following article. It reminded me of this thread so I came to share. Unprecedented ordinance bans Christians from serving on city council.

  17. I think you made my point for me. :) Thank you.
  18. The most obvious place we've lost our freedom of religion is in schools. Its not just teachers but students too who are breaking some sort of rule if they pray or talk about their beliefs. In some school districts there can not be a prayer given at high school graduation. But when I went to my nephews graduation (95 kids) there were not only prayer but religious hymns sung. The difference between this small town graduation and my children's graduation from a larger city school was remarkable. I remember a time when it didn't matter who prayed as long as there was a prayer. Now instead of tolerance we have intolerance. My question is what happened to respect for another person's beliefs? (rhetorical) I saw religious tolerance growing up, including for atheists. I don't know why the tolerance isn't there anymore. Because we have lost the right to unapologetically and publically worship or even speak about God is some places in the USA, we have allowed Satan to open the door for more intolerance.
  19. Think of places such as under beds as storage, also crawl spaces or rafters in the attic for things that are temperature sensitive. I agree with Eowyn, just start with a 3 month supply of what you already eat and rotate it. Its amazing how quickly spending $5 or $10 a month can add up.
  20. Mr Applepansy and I were friends FIRST. Then after two years we got married. We're still friends even after being married 38 years on Aug 6th. Its great being best friends because when I get really really angry at something stupid my husband does I still like my best friend. :) Mr Applepansy says the same thing about me. :)
  21. I agree. Ritchie has made a friend, you, and if he has asked you to call him by a nickname do it. Most Stake President's I know and have known like to have friends who don't call them by their title all the time. They are people too.
  22. On google+ you can "chat" with a webcam. They call it a hang out. Most chat rooms are websites with software that allows you to type back and forth in real time. Most chat room software allows emoticons and sounds and colors. We used to use Yahoo IM or Windows IM a lot to chat. Their conference feature let several people in the same "room" talk together. Not all chat rooms attract the "dregs of society" and not all are dirty. Most of the time in the chat room here it was a clean conversation. We had a lot of fun. Classylady, In the right group I think you'd enjoy chatting.
  23. Thanks Skippy...now I have to watch the movie again.
  24. Lots of these stereotypical ideas about Utah just aren't true. I'm sorry you grew up thinking they were. Nobody has every said 'marry a young girl right out of high school'. Young Women have been counseled repeatedly in Young Women's Conference to get an education. I'm sorry you're having a hard time dating. I expect you'll need to look somewhere besides your ward. Since the age change for missionaries, more and more young women are going on missions. :) Maybe it would be wise to start looking for a single SRM. :) You're gotten good dating advice. I wish you all the best.
  25. No... I've always been applepansy here.
