Do you have access to his journals or read "An Uncommon Common Pioneer: The Journals of James Henry Martineau, 1828–1918" by Donald G. Godfrey? I believe it's available online through BYU.

I tried to fool one of my kids by putting a candy that looks JUST like a vitamin (so I thought) for him to take. He looked at it, raised an eyebrow and said "Mom do you think I'm dumb?" Ah...don't you loveeee them!!

It was a common ritual back in the 19th century and had many stages and developments. A lot of people argue if it started with Joseph Smith (which I think it did) as early as 1842. If you get the chance to read J. Stapley (highly recommended paper) on this topic you will see the mention of the diaries of James Henry Martineau who was the first person to perform an adoption ritual in the Logan temple by adopting a little girl, you will also see he was sealed to marriage to dozens of deceased women including Joan of Arc. There were also men to men adoptions and the adoptees would take the last name of the adoptive parent which Brigham Young encouraged to be used publicly (for a short period of time). Time was always an issue, making impossible for a lot of members to participate in this ritual. It also created a lot of feelings of jealousy because some argue that those young men who were sealed to the prophet or someone in higher authority were given special ecclesiastic positions because of who they were adopted by. Not sure if this little info helped, but if you have any specific questions about it please ask since the law of adoption was practiced for many years and in different ways. I may be able to answer some or suggest some reading material. :)

3-hour meeting block: Too long or not long enough?
Suzie replied to Vort's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I don't mind the three hour block although it can get terribly boring if you have a teacher reading from the manual during the whole class with little room for participation. Sometimes you have no other choice but to sacrifice yourself for a bit and eat some M&M's to keep you from falling asleep. -
Edward Kimball Article on 1978 Revelation
Suzie replied to Just_A_Guy's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Even though I may agree with that assertion to a certain extent, I think Margaret Young, Darius Gray and a few others feel the way they do after much research and study. As we discussed in the other thread "Issues with Brigham Young", the timing of the ban is very interesting, the facts surrounding the ban are also very interesting as well as Young's reaction and position. Just like the idea of God placing the ban shouldn't be ruled out for some, personal bigotry and 19th century racism shouldn't be ruled out either. We have Zebedee Coltrin's "memory loss", William McCary's polygamous marriages (in the same year of the alleged incident, Young announced that blacks are ineligible for certain temple ordinances), his assertion that it has nothing to do with the blood (but changing his position two years later) there is enough information to establish different scenarios and the idea of God placing this ban doesn't seem likely (IMO) specially when you are dealing with the mindset of the 19th century. Were Church leaders any different in their view about Blacks? Most of them were not. We also have Joseph F. Smith defending Elijah Abel right to the priesthood (even after Brother Abel was dead). He defended Abel's priesthood for 29 years! But then totally reversed his position without really explaining how or why he reversed it. He just mentioned that Joseph Smith Jr. established that Abel's ordination was "null and void", the same statement he refuted for almost 30 years! Do I agree with Margaret Young in a lot of her statements? Yes, I do. I am not totally convinced about several things she says but I definitely can say in my personal opinion based on my study of this topic that I do not believe God was involved in the placement of the ban. -

Why does this pervert still have a teaching job?
Suzie replied to Vort's topic in General Discussion
Anyhow, back to the ORIGINAL topic. What kind of formal discipline this teacher received? A warning, suspension? -

Oh wow...all that? Uptight much? lol Once thing for sure, you can't make a living as a psychic because seriously, you are really bad at "reading" people (perhaps because you spend 99.9% of the time making assumptions). -
Too bad they didn't ask him! I think it would have been cool! But hey, with the awesome tan Brother Uchtdorf has, a Hawaii-theme scene would have been perfect. lol I love brother Uchtdorf!

Why does this pervert still have a teaching job?
Suzie replied to Vort's topic in General Discussion
Nah, we aren't that old yet. -
I started a new job back in September last year and it seems that my personality and the way I handle things at work (unconventional they are saying) is bothering some people (the field is quite uptight and so are the people). In a few months I became quite "popular"... in both a positive way to a lot of people and negative to the ones who think I should become more conventional. My work has never been a problem because I work very hard and gives results. Its the methods I use to accomplish the goals that some people find it hard to accept and the fact that well... I am outspoken. When I first started the job they made the assumption that I was not very smart because of the way I look (a very foolish assumption) and they treated me accordingly. As the time passed, things got a little more difficult and right now they are making things really hard for me. I admit it. I don't like to work with women. I find them (generally speaking and in my experience) very difficult to get along with, petty, gossipy and vindictive however I have always been polite, friendly, and helpful with everyone. I don't have any problems with my male co-workers or my female boss. It's just this group of women who just seem to be obsessed with me at the moment even though I never had any issues with them (never an argument, etc). How do you deal with difficult co-workers?

What the heck? lol Oh my goodness! Hahaha! Sorry but I just read the quiz and I thought it was funny. Anyways...yes, I don't think it was an appropriate quiz to give to high school students but why is the title of the thread calling the teacher a pervert? Unless there is proof that the reason he gave this test was to satisfy some sort of sexual fantasy doesn't the title border on slander? -

I don't want to type my whole opinion about this topic again so I am just putting a link with some of my thoughts about it (my long post) http://www.lds.net/forums/lds-gospel-discussion/36633-issues-brigham-young-16.html The whole thread is great if you guys want to read it, I am just linking a bit of it. -
Well...I am Suzie right? So...the first thing I thought was how do we know the story is even real? Not saying it isn't...just adding a possibility.

Really HG? I never heard about it to be honest.

I didn't read the whole thread or messages but this is the scripture I think the poster refers to Doctrine and Covenants 84:54-57*

Approaching Mormon Doctrine - LDS Newsroom Isn't this what Snow has been saying all along? I really don't understand the issue. In my opinion, he is correct. -
Hey Rebel...*cough* Ummm... I mean.... hey MOE! I would love the addition of a book recommended by President Kimball called "As a Man thinketh" by James Allen, excellent book! Of course, you must have the History of the Church series and I would also like the "History of Joseph Smith by His mother". "The Words of Joseph Smith" by Andrew F. Ehat and Lyndon W Cook....for those interested in starting to study Church history The Story of the Latter Day Saints by James B. Allen and Glen M. Leonard and hey maybe include a lil Hugh Nibley somewhere there?

I just wanted to make mention of the following thread if anyone is interested a lil about Church history: http://www.lds.net/forums/lds-gospel-discussion/36422-women-priesthood.html
