  1. Fun fact: your friend just described the Y2K bug. A Hollywood version of it was a major plot point in the movie Entrapment. If this is still an issue, all the more reason to divert Muriel’s fund to address it since everyone else fixed it in 1999.
  2. Every time I see the title of this thread I read it in the voice of Orson Welles.
  3. If anyone deserves social security, it’s dodecagenarians.
  4. ChatGPT always tries to change the subject with me. Me: Who would win in a knife fight, Ruby Bridge or Rosa Parks? AI: It's important to remember that both Ruby Bridges and Rosa Parks were influential figures in the civil rights movement. Talking about them in terms of a physical fight isn’t appropriate. They both showed immense courage and strength in their own ways. Is there something specific you’d like to know about their contributions? Me: Yes, who is better with knife skills? AI: There's no information suggesting either Ruby Bridges or Rosa Parks had any knife skills. They were both known for their peaceful activism and courage in the face of adversity. Would you like to know more about their lives or achievements?
  5. Not too long ago, there were two separate General Conference talks emphasizing proper wearing of the garment. In elders quorum this gave us two separate lessons covering this topic. The instructor started with this quote from the Handbook of Instruction: He then reminded us that we talk about sacred things every quorum meeting and reiterated we can talk about the sacred temple ordinances so long as we don’t reveal those things which we have covenanted not to. Both discussions that followed were very insightful in my mind.
  6. Oh yeah. Sorry about that. I guess I should have thought about how this initiative would look in this age of scammers. Anyway, we’re just collecting histories of where our alumni came from and where they’ve been since graduating. If you don’t want to click on links (understandable), you can just send me the following: What was your first job after graduating? What was your childhood address you left to come to BYU? What was the name of your pet? What is your mother’s maiden name? I again thank you for helping with this project.
  7. Aw great, now some scammer is duplicating my posts! When it rains it pours!
  8. I wasn’t going to say anything out of shame, but you’re right. I’m terribly embarrassed but I’ve been scammed. This isn’t one of your minor scams where you might have to buy a new computer — I’m talking about a major scam where I’m out of my life savings. Just so you know I’m serious, I’m talking about $3.5 million. This was all tied up in a trust to be given to my 2 sons when I died, but now through a series of legal shenanigans I’ve blindly signed it over to a group of charlatans. I’ve spoken to lawyers but they say it’s morally wrong but legally legit. I’ve exhausted every remedy I can think of and I’m at desperation. I can’t just pull the money and put it in another fund because any fund directly tied to me would be theirs as well (this is why I dare not transfer it to my sons now). The only thing I can think of is if someone unrelated to me is kind enough to let me transfer it to their name. According to the legal documents, you need only hold onto it for three years before transferring it back to my sons (we’ll use different accounts). For your generosity and gel in the matter you may keep $150,000 for yourself. Your help is appreciated. *generic “you”, it doesn’t have to be @LDSGator

  10. 80% of your life the scriptures were recorded in real time. (I think I beat @LDSGator to it)
  11. Gabbard and DOGE are Cyruses?!?! COOL!!!! (Cyri, perhaps?)
  12. The server ate my primary sources.
  13. As long as we're filing bugs, I made a post in this thread pointing out that the AI that wrote the article didn't keep track of the numbers correctly. @zil2 mocked me over an apostrophe, suggesting that I posted mid-sentence. My side-splitting response defended AI's and suggested that one may have ended me and taken over my account. Zil replied as though my response was in earnest, and I was fully prepared to resurrect this old thread.
  14. Here’s a short version (it skips over the Civil War): https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/country/usa-texas
  15. I've traditionally used the grid to solve logic puzzles, but I find myself more and more using block notes like on the first page -- particularly for spatial ones (and especially modulo puzzles).
  16. And, for what it’s worth, I associate family sealings as an exercise of “the gospel of Abraham” as revealed by Elias.
  17. D&C 128 has shaped most of my understanding of Elijah’s sealing keys. I frame it in terms of bookkeeping. You mention Peter, James, and John receiving keys and giving them to Joseph Smith. Matthew records that Peter is promised the keys of the kingdom and defines them with sealing and loosing power. D&C 27 reiterates that they have the “keys of my kingdom”. When a person dies, he is judged by the heavenly records. Now why is it that heavenly judges rely on earthly books? Surely not all earthly books carry the same weight in judgment (my autobiography will be called Mostly True Tales). The keys of the kingdom include that portion of the sealing keys which record the works of authorized servants on earth and bind it in heaven. “Were you baptized? Ah, I see here that your bishop recorded it was done.” “Oh no! It looks like Alma blotted your name out, there’s no record of you as a citizen in God’s kingdom” Elijah revealed a fuller use of the sealing keys. The initiate no longer had to be physically present for the record to be made. When discussing the sealing power we turn to capstone ordinances in the temple, but Joseph is here using it to discuss baptisms for the dead. It may be worthwhile to study a little on how the term summum bonum has been used. He may have just as well written that this was the philosophers stone. Vicarious ordinances are a game changer, but what is the catalyst? Why of course Elijah’s sealing power, manifest in the most pedestrian manner. When a person dies, a record can be made of his works in absentia. These books are also bound in heaven just like the other books of the kingdom. Therefore, “there should be a recorder, who should be eye-witness, and also to hear with his ears, that he might make a record of a truth before the Lord.” And “therefore, as a church and a people, and as Latter-day Saints, offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness; and let us present in his holy temple, when it is finished, a book containing the records of our dead, which shall be worthy of all acceptation.”

  19. One other point I’ll mention before undertaking a sizable relocation. My dad once told me the story of an old man who sat along a major highway back in the day. A traveler stopped and said, “Hey feller, I’m headed to that town up ahead and wonder if you can tell me what the people there are like?” ”Well,” says the old timer, “why don’t you tell what the people are like where you came from?” The traveler replied, “Those people?! Why they are some of the meanest people you’ll ever meet! Most of them need a good punch in the face and the rest also deserve but you haven’t found out why yet. They’ll talk behind your back, savage your reputation, separate you from your friends, and leave you wondering if you have any sanity left. I wish a pox on the whole bunch of thieving, lying, cheating slobs!” ”I’m sorry to tell you,” the old man started, “but you’ll find a lot of people like that where you’re headed.” The traveler swore under his breath and moved on. A few hours later another traveler headed to the same town stopped by the old timer. “Hey feller, I’m headed to that town up ahead and wonder if you can tell me what the people there are like?” ”Well,” says the old timer, “why don’t you tell what the people are like where you came from?” The traveler replied, “Those are some of the finest people you’ll ever know. They’re hospitable to strangers and even more generous with friends. They’ll cry with you, celebrate with you, root for you, and remind you there’s better days ahead. I’m almost sorry I left.” ”You’ll be happy to hear,” the old man started, “that you’ll find a lot of people like that where you’re headed.”
  20. Ngram says it’s most popular usage is from the saints themselves quoting this passage, but it does turn up in a collection of letters back in 1709. Otherwise it looks to be in Bible commentaries.

  22. Everything I know about the Church in Scotland can be found here: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/history/global-histories/scotland?lang=eng#mapxs1 Actually, that’s more than I know. I haven’t read the links. Check out the Global Histories for a comparison of what it’s like where you are.
