  2. Here is a nice article about it.... there are a lot of nice quotes in there, though it is mostly about killing needlessly there is a lot about animals in the millenium The Gospel and Animals - Ensign Aug. 1972 - ensign
  3. Is this just a local issue, or does this happen a lot of places? One day my daughter heard some of it and she told me that when she grows up and has kids she won't live here. She did say that she would let me move in next door though :)
  4. I have found that there are some regional practices that are different. For example when I went off to college I dated a lot of people, They knew I was dating other people, and I usually dated like 3 people at a time. It was no big deal really. When I came back to my home town later I tell people this and they are shocked, gasp!gasp!gasp! She is a loose woman, they think Around here if you date you are practically married, one date and you are basically going steady. If you don't stop dating you get engaged, and unless something happens and you break up (and you had better have a good reason to break up or you will get a bad reputation) you get married. So, you go on a date and you're practically married. This is why I'm so reluctant to have my daughters date here, well, that and there are hardly any young men who are LDS much less missionary types... and to be honest I would rather they marry someone in the temple and not have to go through a lot of tough times marrying and then hoping the husband will eventually convert and go to the temple later. That's what I did, and while it did turn out great at the moment, there were years of hard waiting and tears.
  5. Thanks, guys...I guess I'm just really feeling it this week. Most of the time I kind shrug it off and move on, but when I went to visit one sis after she skipped church this Sunday and she opened the door I could tell she had been crying all morning from what certain sisters had been saying at the New Years party Sat. night. I just couldn't take those brown, red rimmed eyes. I'm so glad she didn't slam the door in my face. I had her over for FHE last night, and I think she is feeling a little bit better. I hope she gives us another chance. She has moved along so far and grown so much, she is just a few months away from getting her endowments! We are going on a trip next month to do baptisms at the temple. Boy, I really think she needs to go and feel some of the blessings of sticking with it, ya know? Her kids are 1,2 and 3 and she has very little time to sit and ponder. My two teenagers are going to watch her kids while we are in there, I am really excited and up to this weekend she was too...oh please oh please don't give up little sis!
  6. So I don't know what to do when someone, someones, especially church leaders say offensive things about others, especially new members/investigators. I realize it is foolish to take offense when it is intended, but I don't know what to do or say. Here are a couple of situations: a sis who has just left the room upset after telling me and a few others that she has recently had yet another miscarriage, and I say, "I feel so bad, I just don't know what to say to her, I'd better follow her home to make sure she gets there okay..." and the RS pres. says, "The reason God won't give her another baby is because she doesn't control the ones she already has, everyone has seen the way they behave." In front of everyone in the room....how could I possibly respond to that? If I just leave without saying anything could this be construed as agreement? Should I disagree with my RS pres in front of everyone? At the time I just worked my mouth, open and shut open and shut, and said something like," Uhhh she's leaving I'd better go now" and left. Another instance has happened time and time again in our ward. We have a new member/usually an investigator who starts coming to church. I have noticed that if the person does not make much money, they are usually not welcomed, and are always talked about the minute they leave the room. IF they have children and are poor someone invariably says that they are the next welfare family that the church doesn't need, and their kids are complained about quite a bit. Recently (in the past two weeks) two new moms in the ward overheard on separate occasions some of the sisters speaking this way about them and their kids( one of them actually did not know that the church had a welfare system). Both moms had decided not to come back to church, both moms (after a lot of visiting and all the encouragement I could think of) have now decided to come back, but are extremely jaded and are reluctant to leave their children in primary. I have told them to bring their littlest ones to Gospel Principles class with them rather than skip classes altogether. I keep hoping that someone will notice that we can't keep investigators, but so far after about 10 years of it now I am feeling really discouraged. I don't have a calling, which gives me time to do things for these dear new little sisters, like give them rides to/from church activities. I sit with them in classes to answer any questions they might have. I tell them who they need to talk to about things like preparing for baptism/temple endowments... what home teachers are for, etc. Sometimes I help with weddings if they aren't married, and things like that, but but I lose them when they hear words that they should not have to hear at church. I have discussed this with my VT and she suggested that I discontinue hanging out with the 'stinky kids in class' meaning those that do not at first blush to be what sisters call "an asset to the ward"...but you know what, I like those stinky kids....they are smelling pretty rosey to me in comparison at this point. How do I convey to others how precious these new sisters are, as well as their little ones? People are starting to roll thier eyes at me when I say something nice about someone new at church, and I find myself henpecked if I am late because I brought two families to church with me....sure I apologize to my hubby since he is conducting, but why are they worried about whether I get there on time when I have others that need me? I mean sure sometimes it takes me 2 or three trips to get everyone to church in the morning, but isn't it more important that they all get there than whether or not I am sitting down in my seat during the opening hymn? One said this month, "Late again? What's your excuse this time?" As we were both coming in the door at the same time I did not tell her that one little family was not ready on time, I don't think it was any of her business. As the last RS lesson was on setting goals it was a funny point to those around me to bring up being on time as a necessary goal, as it is inconsiderate to others to be late. The two investigators beside me both gasped and looked at me. One apologized like six times for making me late and I just told her that I didn't care about it one bit, and not to worry. Should I just keep ignoring it, what do I say to these sisters that get offended on both sides? I just really need a pick me up.
  7. there is a beginning and end of time, that's what Jesus was born in the meridian of. eternity doesn't go linear, it goes in a round. O It goes in a circle. You are completely exhausting me, seminary...do you take some kind of medication that makes you so tenacious? I'm not even sure what your last two sentences mean. Is that last question a question? The place where God is, there isn't any time, it's all present. I've been there and I'm telling you that this lesson explains it so well and makes me understand what I was seeing better. I know that you don't understand it, but just becuase you can't understand it doesn't make it wrong. The Lord only speaks in the past tense so that you and I can undestand it better, becuase we are in the dimension of time and are linear minded. All things are present before Him. I know that this lesson is true, not because of reasoning, or quotes or speculation which derives from rationalizing what I want to believe. This manual has got it right.
  8. I was just wondering if you have gone to Gospel Principles class? It is one of the classes during the 3 hour block that is for new members and investigators. I was just thinking that if you are missing that class, you are missing quite a lot. Skipping that class repeatedly might give the signal to the missionaries that you are not nearly as interested as you might say that you are. I would suggest going to that class and studying the manual for your own edification, meeting others in the class, and get on those knees :) There is nothing like personal revelation to help you make a decision.
  9. I was thinking that this might be the growing experience that he needs. Hopefully he will have the self-reliance and self-confindence to go out on his own, ponder, pray, and do those things that his calling requires of him rather than passing it on to his wife. Maybe he just needs that boost he could get with this call.
  10. Jesus was born in the meridian of time. Time will cease to be once all the things this world was meant for have been accomplished. "And Eternity" refers to that state that we will be in after time is done away with. For there to be a meridian, there has to be a beginning and an end.
  11. Those little things like attending class is where I find out what I need to repent of. I can't repent of something if I don't know that it is a sin. A sin is not being like God, in order to know what sins are, I need to study my scriptures and find out what God is like. Attending class helps me to understand scripture that I might read on my own, but don't comprehend. It is a sin to let my family go hungry because of my lack of planning and preparing, a lesson on family preparedness can help me repent of that sin, and know how to prepare for my children the way the Lord has prepared for me. We might repent of stealing, but if we put ourselves right back into a situation where we are needing to steal food, we have sinned. In order to repent, we have to pray. Also, I found that immediately after recieving my endowments in the temple I became much more like my Savior, and more comfortable in an environment where He is likely to be found. I became nicer, more patient, more knowledgeable in teaching the gospel to my children to the point that my husband noticed it and wanted to go get his endowments, too. The temple is where we can recieve that armor of God to help us withstand the fiery darts of the adversary. As simple as repenting and being baptized may seem, it takes a lifetime. It is not done in one day, that's why the Lord has given us a lifetime to do it. Repenting is not something you do one day, as we learn more about what God is like, we realize we have sinned and again are given the opportunity to repent of that sin and have it washed away. These little talks you are complaining about, are teaching us how to aviod sin. Repenting means you are sorry that you sinned. To put a sin behind you and not do it again means that you have to know how to not do that sin again. When Jesus was baptized, it was not the end for Him. It was the beginning of His ministry on the earth. Likewise, baptism is not our ending, it is the beginning of the work He has given us to do. When we can repent and have our sins washed away, like our Savior whose name we take at baptism, we are supposed to share that knowledge of the atonement with others. Like our Savior who we claim as our example, We share the atonement with others while on missions, home teaching, with our children in family home evenings and with the dead in the temple. All the books before and after.... what? YOu think God gave us too many scriptures? He gave us a LOT of commandments, maybe it's time for you to break down and read those other books that God worked so hard to make a bring forth to you. The first two commandments in no way cancel out the others. The purpose of the Book of Mormon is not to 'boil down' the gospel. It is to give us the 'fulness' of the gospel which if it could be done in one chapter, He would have done it in one chapter.
  12. All of the differing Christian churches there are is a testimony to me of why we need the Book of Mormon now more than ever in the history of the world. With the Bible being translated into newer versions, and into more languages than ever, and many people arguing about different meanings to the same scripture, we need another testament of Jesus Christ's teachings. More than has ever been on the earth previously, there are attacks on the divinity of the word of God, what better time to be armed with the Book of Mormon which teaches the same gospel, testimonies of Christ from the other side of the earth, and testifies of the truthfulness of the Bible.
  13. I can see that you do not understand this concept. When we are sealed for time and eternity, it is because after there is no more time, there is eternity. Time ceases to be, and there is a state of eternity. God is in this dimesion, mentioned in the quote from the lesson manual. Also in D& C 88 God is in the bosom of eternity, HE is in the midst of all things, all things are present with Him. That is why it is said, anointed for "Time and also for eternity" they are separate states of being. Meanwhile, no I do not understand your changeable God theory. I really am trying to understand it, but it seems to be beyond me. As far as I know we have and unchangeable God, as expressed in several places such as Moroni 8:18, but that is a different thread altogether.
  14. I was referring to the first sentence of the first quote, "God does not live in the dimension of time as do we." as well as the following sentence, "We are not only hampered by our finiteness, but also by being in the dimension of time." They seem pretty clear to me.
  15. OR the bookmark could just say " for Those who pursue this course" :)
  16. There is a sentence in the introduction that I like, "Those who pursue this course and ask in faith will gain a testimony of its truth and divinity by the power of the Holy Ghost.” This year the course is the Book of Mormon :) Or you could go with the "Another testament of Jesus Christ"
  17. Here also is a beautiful testimony I found in an article “As we proceed [with our family history research],” said Elder Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve at a 1977 regional representatives’ seminar, “we are joined at the crossroads by those who have been prepared to help us. “They come with skills and abilities precisely suited to our needs. And, we find provisions: information, inventions, help of various kinds, set along the way waiting for us to take them up. “It is as though someone knew we would be traveling that way. We see the invisible hand of the Almighty providing for us.” (See Ensign, May 1991, p. 26.) Brother Rich considers his notebook of family history to be a workbook. He makes additions and corrections to it from his research, and he searches for the names of ancestors with missing ordinances. He and his wife, Lynda, enjoy attending the temple and performing the ordinances for their ancestors. “From my own experience I know that Elder Packer’s words are true,” says Brother Rich. “My sister, my wife, and I have all felt the spirit of this work calling us, begging us to continue—to find our dear family members who paved the way for us. Who crossed the Atlantic in creaking ships. Who fought in the Revolutionary War for our independence. Who cut out a home on the frontier. Who heard the call of the Prophet Joseph Smith, joined the Church, and crossed the plains. Who have done so much that we could be here. Let us do their temple work. Let us find them in the records. There will be help from beyond the veil. We will know where to go.” FamilySearch®?Stepping-Stone to the Temple - Ensign Aug. 1992 - ensign
  18. Here is a lesson on the subject "Saviors on Mount Zion" that you might find helpful. I have lately experienced a 'lull' in my family's temple work this month, due to the busy-ness I subject myself to in the holiday season. I really appreciate the reminder you've given me today, it's time to get back to work :) Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith Chapter 41: Becoming Saviors on Mount Zion
  19. Funnily enough in my home town, which is a very small one, there was a billboard that almost made me drive right off the road. It is a billboard belonging to the local Methodist church. It had a big picture of Jesus on it. It was an LDS picture of Jesus that is found in our meetinghouses, etc. I remarked on it to someone and they thought I had lost my mind. I showed them the articles of faith pass along card I had that had the same picture on it, the exact same colors and everything. Not the same Jesus? Well, evidently the Methodist church thinks so! Here is a quote from Mormon.org on frequently asked questions: Are Mormons Christians? Gordon B. Hinckley, prior President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1995-2008), said: “We are Christians in a very real sense and that is coming to be more and more widely recognized. Once upon a time people everywhere said we are not Christians. They have come to recognize that we are, and that we have a very vital and dynamic religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. We, of course, accept Jesus Christ as our Leader, our King, our Savior...the dominant figure in the history of the world, the only perfect Man who ever walked the earth, the living Son of the living God. He is our Savior and our Redeemer through whose atoning sacrifice has come the opportunity of eternal life. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pray and worship in the name of Jesus Christ. He is the center of our faith and the head of our Church. The Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ and witnesses of His divinity, His life, and His Atonement.” His name is on our church buildings, on everything the church distributes, including missionaries....If it speaks of Him it is of Him...The Church of Jesus Christ
  20. When the people that Moses was leading in the wilderness were worshipping the golden calf, they were giving it credit for things, and praying to it. Worship and gratitude are different in the response that you expect. True worship is a two way relationship.
  21. Cuisinart egg beater/hand mixer love it a set of silverwear and a set of knives I've been cooking like crazy all week and loving it.
  22. I have gone to so many Christian denominations....I asked questions like this all over the place...they don't know why we have bodies Why do we have a body, and why were we put on Earth, the same place where He put Satan? A: Becuase He loves us.... Q: and we don't exist until we have a body...so how did He love me before I existed? A: We are not supposed to question God, and if we are good and humble we will recite what we have been told and not ask any more questions...and if we are bad we go to hell. You know that rock that Peter had, that revelation? The power to recieve truth directly from God through the Holy Spirit? Well, a lot of people don't have that, they are just using their best guess. So when they hear the truth from someone who does have that revelation they assume that person is also just going on their best guess. Until they get that rock, that revelation directly from HF, there is nothing you can do or say that they will see or hear.
  23. That instance, I'm sure, is just one of millions for him. I thought that he shared that so that others who also experience such things would know they are not alone. That is certainly how I felt at the time. I feel like we are together, like there are others who would understand when I tell them something wonderful happened because of the workings of the Holy Spirit...again. I have had way too many personal experiences of this sort to not believe it. Some were in life saving situations, some in lesson or talk giving situations.... but the HG works, He is real, this is why Jesus spoke in parables. Those that have ears, let them hear. This is the kind of thing that fast and testimony meetings are for.
