Happy birthday, Pale!

Wow, that's a pretty broad brush you're using. I'm not a member of any police or military organization, but I can tell you from my own experience that the people I do know in those organizations are not nearly as unsavory characters as you claim they are at all. Are there bad apples? Of course there are, but those numbers are quite low, and I would guess they are a much lower percentage than the population at large. I think you watch too many police dramas on TV and extrapolate what you see there as being representative of what really goes on in law enforcement as a whole. You're wrong. I also think you are way off in your expression of why police go into that field. I have never known one to have a chip on his shoulder and a need to prove anything to anybody. The ones I know hold the same general values of life, liberty, and morality that I do. One of them is even a former LDS Seminary teacher who quit to go into law enforcement. He's the kindest, calmest, most gentle and ethical guy you could ever meet. He also puts his life on the line every time he puts on his uniform to go to work. He never knows if that shift will be the last one he works. Your views of the men and women who volunteer to protect your right to denigrate them are also way off the mark.

This begs the question: How often do you and (I assume) your adult friends talk about minor teen girls having nipple piercings?

I am always happy to see members of the military wear their uniforms to church, just as I am happy to see members of law enforcement wear their uniforms to church. There is nothing wrong with it, it makes me feel proud to be an American and feel more connected to those sworn to protect our country and its citizens. I don't know how they handle the uniform at the temple, I don't recall ever seeing anybody in uniform in a sealing room. Obviously if they are going through normal sessions at the temple, the uniform is removed in favor of the temple clothing and kit.

Which is what the OP is talking about. Same story, different paper.

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/blogsfaithblog/53561480-180/church-lds-holocaust-proxy.html.csp I hope they subject the person who did this to Church Discipline. Whoever is doing this seems intent on willfully disregarding standing church policy. I thought it was common knowledge among LDS that submitting names of Holocaust victims who are not direct relatives is not acceptable behavior. I wonder how difficult it would be to have a master list of names that would automatically be flagged and subject to personal approval by someone in the office in charge of these things. The official church statement issued today: Church Statement on Violations of Proxy Baptism Policy - LDS Newsroom Another thought that came to me is wondering if perhaps someone is purposely submitting these names just to embarrass the church when a name does get through the filters.

Stupid Question on Last Week's Sunday School Lesson
john doe replied to Yehshen's topic in General Discussion
I believe he was trying to make a point about keeping the Sabbath Day holy. We are counseled to do as much as we can to avoid unnecessary shopping on Sunday. And yes, there are exceptions, we call it 'having an ox in the mire'. Some things have to be done on Sunday, but we are encouraged to try as much as possible to plan ahead to avoid it. -
They are generally also granted special status if an investigation shows that there is a legitimate threat if they were to return to their home country. I would link to the story about the group I referred to, but they are campaigning against a certain US Presidential candidate. Someone interested in them could do a search on Utah News, Sports, Weather and Classifieds | ksl.com and find it though.

There is a group that has come up recently claiming that LDS doctrine and writings in the Book of Mormon show that the Church is against immigration laws. They claim immigration is a 'God event', and that anyone who wants to enforce immigration laws does not follow LDS doctrine.

Nobody forces anybody to go to BYU. And nobody is looked down upon for choosing to go someplace else to get an education. If you feel you would chafe at BYU's rules and Honor Code, then I suggest you not go there. If a person is currently enrolled there and doesn't like the rules, then I suggest they leave. There are thousands of kids turned away yearly who would gladly take their place.

I don't have a source for this, but it seems to me that the first time I had heard of this incident, they said the person who did it had had their account flagged and were unable to submit names anymore. But I haven't heard that since, so it may have been my imagination.

I think it's extremely insensitive to the survivors for the murderer to be buried near his victims. It is in very poor taste to make a grieving family member walk past or even near the gravesite of the person who killed those young children. No, the spirits don't reside there, but to constantly reopen that wound for the grieving family helps no one in the healing process. Besides that, with the recent history between these two families, I can't imagine how difficult it would be to control oneself if they were to visit the same general plot of ground at the same time. Especially if Josh's father were there, in the wake of all the things he said about the boys' mother and his fantasies of her. That's a situation that should be avoided at all costs. There are 9 other cemetaries in the area that would be just fine for Josh to be buried if they choose to. Personally, I would choose to have him cremated and dump his ashes in the depths of the Mariana Tench, but that's just me.

I agree. Unfortunately, the government misunderstands its role as nanny far too often. I'm sorry, but sending your 'agents' out to inspect kids' lunches brought from home is overstepping your bounds. On the other hand, I wouldn't have nearly as big of a problem with this if the teacher noticed over a period of time that a certain student consistently brought sub-standard or non-nutritional food for lunch and offered him/her better choices at no cost. In that case, I wouldn't even mind if the school sent out a letter citing their concerns and offering to help in some way, either through suggesting better foodstuffs and alternatives or offering school lunches at a reduced rate if needed. You can help people without being offensive about it, but unfortunately many times government agents become heavy-handed when dealing with members of the public they have been hired to assist.

The LDS Church has not made any public statements concerning this matter. It's really nobody's business but your own, and your spouse if you have one.

My understanding is that the bacon is not really bacon, it's merely bacon-flavored. I like bacon, but I'm not sure I would enjoy it as a drink flavoring.

The Powell family tried to buy a plot for Josh that was about 25 feet away from the boys. Apparently the locals were pretty upset by this, and the cemetary put the sale on hold while it gets sorted out.

The thing that gets me is that they sent home a bill for the chicken 'nuggets' they forced on the little girl. "Oh, your lunch from home isn't nutritious enough for our tastes. Here, have some of our Mystery Meat. Now take this bill home and tell your Mommy to pay us for the food we gave you." Sorry, but if you made my child eat food she neither asked for nor wanted then you pay for it, especially if you didn't ask me for permission first.

Let me drop in to reiterate this: This site is not a debate site to discuss whether the LDS Church is true. This site takes that fact as a given. If you wish to debate the truthfulness of the LDS Church, then you need to find another site to do it in. This site is reserved for frank and genial discussion of LDS Church doctrines and practices within the framework of the belief that the LDS Church is true. If you are uncomfortable with that assertion, then it is suggested that you find another site to debate those things. Rule #1 states: While we enjoy the interactions we have with those of other faiths who visit this site, when they turn antagonistic towards the LDS Church, its beliefs, or its leaders, we will take appropriate actions to protect the integrity of our vision.

A few thoughts come to mind: 1) Motes and Beams. 2) It's never my place to tell someone else that they don't belong in Church. 3) Church was created for the benefit of man, not the other way around. 4) Patience is a virtue. 5) We all suffer from judging others, whether righteously or not. 6) Charity is the Pure Love of Christ. 7) What would Jesus do?

And how many people can you cram into a sealing room?
john doe replied to Backroads's topic in General Discussion
I tend to agree. If the bride's family is willing to overrun the marriage ceremony like this, they are sending out definite signals that the groom and his family are insignificant to them. They are setting the ground rules for the marriage for all future events. That is, they expect him to bend to their every whim without regard for his wishes or his family. -

Funny. You say LDS is insignificant, yet here you are on an LDS-centric site trying to outwit us in some sort of effort to show how we are wrong. LDS must be large enough to have caught your attention, but at the same time you want to tell us how we're really nothing. Do we make you nervous or are you just really bored? -

Wow. Sour grapes, anyone? -
Let's try to tone down the rhetoric here people. If you need to step away and count to ten before hitting the 'reply' button, then I urge you to do so.

Since the OP has not been here since November, I doubt she'll be participating in your discussion. Additionally, since this section of the forum is dedicated to introductions, I suggest you start a new thread if you wish to continue exploring the topic of Lilith.
