I don't think those comments come across as "it is time already, cheer up and move on" (although I admit, there are some that do come across like that). Everyone mourns differently, and I think it is so imperative for loved ones to lend support and encouraging words to family members. Some people seem to be able to cope with the pain a little better than others and there are some who really have a hard time and they are unable to function (think, eat, sleep, etc) on a daily basis even after months or years. In many instances, there are feelings of guilt involved which makes the process even harder.

Of course, time is a decisive factor for most cases but it doesn't happen in the same way with everyone and I think encouraging words about the state of being of a loved one being in a "better place" is something that could be appreciated.

I'm not LDS, and I am a coffee-drinker.  However, I'd feel wierd asking for coffee from hosts I knew were LDS.  It doesn't have the same issues as alcohol, but still--out of respect, I would not ask.  Family is different.  However, I still think expecting to be served coffee shows a bit of hubris.

Then don't.  Your house, your rules and I wouldn't allow the 'being Mormon' debate either.

I'd probably stock a variety of herbal teas if you don't already.

I don't know that, I definitely feel one who commits suicide is going to regret it, I feel they will answer for the pain they caused. I just don't feel the need to point it out, rub it in anyones face, or make known my little interior judgement.

I haven't cracked open my bound scriptures in I don't know how long.  I love the Gospel app. It's how I read my scriptures and do lots of other various study things.

And I was the one fighting ebooks.

Comments about someone who commits suicide being "free" are in the same vein as comments about cancer victims no longer being in pain, or accident victims being in a better place. They're comments from survivors meant to ease the tragedy by giving it a silver lining. In my limited experience you see such comments from those further removed from the situation, family members and best friends are usually in too much pain to either be seeking a silver lining or to feel such comments constitute them. When we're talking about someone like a celebrity most people who 'knew' them fall outside of that immediate circle and thus you get a plethora of of such comments, so seeing it in the case of Robin Williams doesn't surprise me.

Thanks to the internet and people speaking up more and sharing their experiences, I believe we are becoming more aware and knowledgeable about mental illness. It is no longer a taboo topic and people does not have to suffer in silence any longer. People seem to accept more the fact that it is a real condition (and not an invention from pseudo-psychologists) and because of that, when we hear about someone committing suicide, a lot of people no longer start with the speech of: "They are going to hell".

Nobody has suggested the obvious choice - stone battlements.  With archer slots so you can fight off the food rioters.

This reminds me of something funny I do and I try very hard not to lol. When I say hi to people, I always smile and wink. Women, men or children. I don't think about it, it comes natural until I started realizing that a few people look at me funny when I do it (it took me a while to figure it out). You know, the look like "why in the world are you winking at me?".

Matthew, with all due respect, it was you who initiated the talk about who would be "in harmony" versus "out of harmony" with the Church.  You're kind of changing the argument now.

I don't think anyone has claimed that the truth of this question, or any other matter, is "unknowable".  What has been suggested is that certain theories do not have Church backing and should not be advanced as though they do; and I would further suggest that it is not always our prerogative to teach everything we know at the immediate moment we first (think we) know it.  The NT and D&C, at least, contain numerous endorsements of this idea.

The essay contextualizes the ban, but does not presume to "pin the origin" of the ban on anything.

I'm afraid that maybe you didn't quite catch my point--which is that sometimes God does give instructions to one set of people that materially differ from the instructions previously given to another set of people.  That is precisely what makes modern prophets so important, even if they do confine themselves to the "what" without always offering the "why".

(This isn't a defense of "lockstep obedience", by the way; but it's a defense of a generally deferential approach that assumes the LDS leadership at both the general and local levels are correct unless or until they are convincingly shown to be incorrect, rather than assuming that--in the event of a difference of opinion between a leader and myself--my own proclivities and prejudices will necessarily and inevitably come up trumps.)

    From the article:

She considers her resignation a statement of solidarity with women who, unlike her, want to remain in the faith while voicing support for women’s ordination.

No, really.  She's leaving as a sign of support to the ones who are staying.

You can't make this stuff up!
