I appreciate teachers trying to change things up. Nothing distracts more than monotone reading from a manual.
    (following the manual is fine)

So I'm going to step outside of my no-frills-teaching zone and actually bring a centerpiece for my Relief Society lesson tomorrow.
It may even look nice, but that's still a far-fetched notion.
    Wish me luck!

Hope you are all well, just wanted to let you all know that I have set a date for my Baptism in May,  Its a while off yet as I am having a baby in March.   I am very happy and excited about it and have no doubts that I am doing the right thing.

There are others, but this book is a very good brief overview of quite a few things. If there is anything in particular that you are interested in there are also other books. You can also find quite a few books on the maxwell institue website. Anything by Hugh Nibley is good, though technical (Find and read it HERE)

Disagreement can be different than just being contentious, it can come from differing perspective, experience, feelings, culture, upbringing, and knowledge. There is nothing wrong with differing world views. (I will admit there are limits to this though)

"To rat out" is a phrase that originates in organized crime, like calling someone a "stool pigeon". If the despicable Gadianton robbers don't like an action, that's an indication that it might be a very good action.

It's easy to second-guess and offer hindsight advice.  In reality, your non-reaction may have been the best course.  Who's to say the Holy Spirit was not moving you to bite your tongue?  I agree that it's too late to revisit the incident.  However, if you anticipate it happening again--or something similar--then perhaps, cutting it off near the beginning and saying something like, "Hey...I know lots of those missionary-types.  If you want, I can have a couple call on you?"  :::wink::: :::nod:::  They'll probably laugh, but get the message.

There are different words, less formal that they indeed do use, but not that one specifically.
Actually generally older people, more often women use words like that, or little firetruck(or man, w/e[whatever] it is) etc...
Complaining about slang, or the evolution of language happens pretty much every generation.
Rather than looking down on someone for being unschooled, a farm boy, possibly with little education or different culture, or even being slow and hesitant with speech. I think it might be better to look at the heart of what they are saying.

Rather than a post modern nihilism, or even an existential-nihilism, this is why I like pragmatism as a response philosophically. Pragmatism can be quite compatible to religion.

Good grief!  I had to resize my browser window to less than full screen, and then all the other stuff shows up - someone needs to let this stuff spend more time in QA...  Off to be quizzed:

OK, it claims I'm "knowledgeable" too.  I was really hoping for an A+ (it's been so long since High School that I can't remember what that feels like...)

Crypto reacted to yjacket in Religious obligation to vote?
I do not believe one has a moral nor civic obligation to vote. I do preface this by saying that I do vote. However, I have found a few arguments about not voting that I do not begrudge those who don't vote.

Let there be no mistake about what government really is; government really is legalized theft and killing. Once you tear down all the pretty facades, slogans, wave-flagging, etc. the absolute naked truth is that government is a mechanism whereby a society determines that some individuals have the ability to steal and kill without penalties. Whether we call that ability to steal a "regulation" or a "law", make no mistake when the EPA fines a company, when a state government fines a business, it is theft, i.e. I have money, I don't voluntarily give it up-you forcibly take it from me-that is theft.

There is a very, very good reason not to vote for the "lesser of two evils"; it is called the "mandate principle". How many times after an election do we hear that the person just voted in now has a "mandate" to put into place his ideas? When individuals choose the lesser of two evils and don't vote for a candidate they can actually believe in they are voting for evil. In fact they are giving more legitimacy to that evil than if they had never voted.  In the last election approximately 130 million people voted; how many of those people actually really wanted the person they voted for vs. just held their nose? In a country of 300 million, 130 million voting is pretty good. Now what if instead of voting against someone, we voted for someone, even if they were going to lose-what if more parties had access to the ballot and say instead of a 51/47 split it was a 35/30/30/5 split. Well the 35% might still win-but it would be fairly obvious that at least 65% of the country wanted something else. The person that claims a "mandate" with a 35% win is going to look pretty stupid.

We have a moral and a civic obligation to support good laws and good candidates-we do not have a moral and civic obligation simply to vote. Because simply voting might end up supporting bad laws and bad candidates.

I don't have a problem with it, if you enter into it with the realization that it is a fund raiser, with no expectation on returns.

I don't have a problem with gambling type games either. Just don't play them with money, no money or collateral refutes the definition of to gamble.

Apparently bunco is a popular game some members play. Though small sums of money are used... :/

My family is stock full of teachers. Aunts and Uncles, and my own Father. Some teaching in other countries. It happens to be a family favorite topic for some reason   Over the many many years, you learn a lot.
On average home schooling might turn out better, with the right well educated rigorous parents. You have to realize the bias in gathering data on home schooling versus public school. Was it controlled for income, parental care, parental involvement, parental education, child nutrition? These same types of parents will likely encourage and guide their children to success even in a subpar teaching condition. A condition that can be found in some public schools, while other schools are excellent.
You have to remember that an average is a mid point, half are above, half are below this point. There are plenty examples of well meaning parents who utterly fail to give their children a good education in homeschool.

Crypto reacted to Jane_Doe in Sins & depression
Clinical depression is a real disease, one that requires proper medical attention.  You need four things:
      1)  Nurture your spirit through scripture study (you seem to be really on top of this).
      2)  Nurture your body through proper diet, exercise, and sleep.   Yes, this is hard to do with depression because depression makes us want to over/under sleep, over/under eat, and we seldom get enough exercise.  It's hard to do, but very critical to do it anyways.
       3) Nurture your mind through proper reading, stimulus, etc.
      4)  If you're sick (and if you have depression, you are) then you need medical attention-- get into counseling.  Counselors see people with these problems everyday and they're really good a treating it.  They can help you.

Crypto reacted to JojoBag in What does it take to commit the Unpardonable sin?
A person must have gone through the temple and received their endowments to commit this sin.  There are those who say that the number of those who become sons of perdition can be counted on the fingers of one hand, but that is false.  There will be many, but there are serious conditions to meet.  I think that the very fact you are asking this shows you have not.  You may have seriously messed up,  but I doubt you've committed the unpardonable sin.

    Cast Iron is simply the best. {Pans}

It might not be "non-stick" but most "non-stick" pans have specific cooking instructions that if aren't followed will create "stick' anyways. (And if you cook right on cast iron same thing applies)

Pots are a different story though. Some have strange cooking profiles, the way they heat food, because of their shape or composition.
