Ya! Cause it was so much better than all the other ones. They are all obsolete as they stand in the shadow of the monolith that is ‘The Last Jedi’.

“The Christmas season is a time to reflect and act upon the blessings and opportunities we have because of the birth, life, Atonement, and Resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ. As our Heavenly Father “so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son” (John 3:16), we express our love toward one another and toward God and his precious Son by giving of ourselves.” (https://www.lds.org/topics/christmas?lang=eng) you are right... but Christmas is NOT about the second coming. Therefore it is most definitely NOT a Christmas song. If you disagree, if you think Joy to the world IS a Christmas song than that means you disagree with the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and are an apostate.

But what does that mean? Do we all need an experience like 70 year old sis Jones who burst into tears during the solemn assembly? I have full faith and confidence in his decisions and would say I already have a strong testimony that he is the prophet. I never prayed to know, I just already have a testimony of his calling. When he spoke about having us ask God if he was a prophet, my mental reactive response was “why? I already know this.”

It is interesting, I’m the same way. I often see this attitude as a strength, but I think it is just pride and a great weakness of ours.

I am a member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, not the The Church of *insert current prophet name* of Latter-day Saints. I don’t follow Russell M Nelson, I follow the Prophet of God no matter who it is. I learned the church was true ages ago, I don’t know that I need conformation for every change in leadership.

If you reject the BOM does that mean you are not a true Christian?
Fether replied to Luke's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Great answers above, I’ll add my two cents. Assuming all things in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is 100% true (which I wholly believe), that would mean all doctrines in the Bible and Book of Mormon are perfectly in harmony and both inspired by the same God. With that logic, how could someone who believes the Bible disbelieve the Book of Mormon? Accepting the Bible and not the Book of Mormon is like accepting the Gospel of Matthew but rejecting the Book of Acts. Any Christian would scoff at such a claim. The only difference is that the Book of Mormon took place in a separate continent and its contents take on a different title. What is happening, however, is that people aren’t reading the Book of Mormon, they are picking it apart and trying to find things in it that don’t meld with their beliefs. And their beliefs don’t come from the Bible, they come from the cultural Christianity that exists today (Philosophy of men mingled with scripture). Examples of why people reject the Book of Mormon: 1) I’ll ask “Will you pray and ask God if the Book of Mormon is true?” And be met with “Oh no! I don’t question God! Your church can’t be true if your asking me to question God!” (I got this response probably a dozen times on my mission... no idea where it came from). 2) Someone will say “Nephi murdered Laban! How can you believe this Book!?!?” They fail to recognize that at that time and under the circumstances that lead up to his death, Jewish law would have pardoned Nephi 100% (many members and non-members don’t realize this). 3) “There are so many wars in the Book of Mormon! Why would God have such a violent book written??” They completely reject or are ignorant of all the genocidal tendencies of the early Israelites and the wars that constantly ravaged the Old Testament. 4) “The Bible is the final word! The end of the Book of Revelations says that man cannot add or take away from this Book or they will be punished!” But reject the origin of how the Bible came about, the fact that other biblical writing were written after the book of revelation, like the gospel of John. 5) Many will reject the Book of Mormon simply because of historical things that have happened. All of which have their biblical counter parts. So people can call themselves Christians all they want, but having had read both the Bible and the Book of Mormon, I find that both testify of the same God. To accept one and not the other is nothing more than a matter of pride, loyalty to their church, or ignorance.- 45 replies

One things I use this forum for is practice in responding to false doctrine haha. There is a lot of false doctrine and incorrect beliefs out there. A lot of it manifests itself on this forum. I use the false doctrine spoken of here as opportunities to find the answers, memorize where the authoritative teachings are on the topics. That way in the future when I hear it in person I know how to respond to it. Ive actually learned a ton by looking up official comments on controversial topics or particular doctrines that others disbelieve.

I relate. Though I have been a member my whole life and a member of this forum only a little longer than you, I feel your frustration. I take occasional sabbaticals from this place on occasion because I find the threads either pointless or tooo frustrating to remain a part of. I hope I have never lead you astray in thinking a certain way. I try to form my beliefs and opinions around what is officially said by the church.

At some point Brigham a young taught something called “blood atonement” which might be what he is referencing.

Just looking for some insight. In preparing the primary lesson today on Daniel and the Lions Den, I read yet again the bit about how the princes and king made it law that no one should pray to anyone but the king or they would be out to death. Each time I read this I am reminded of the story of Alms and his people on the wilderness. In Mosiah 24:11 we learn that Amulon had guards watch over the people of Alma, and if they were caught praying they would be put to death. Two similar situations yet completely different responses. Daniel: Faithfuly prayed in defiance and was miraculously saved. Alma’s people: Taught to not pray openly but to pray in their hearts Any insights on to why these experiences were different? Why wouldn’t Alma, the prophet, tell the people to pray anyway as Daniel did?

I love this approach, but only if the “I believe” doesn’t contradict what the church says.

I edited, I left out an important word haha. It is the Savior’s church, the church runs the ordinances, and it is our compliance to the savior who is asking us to comply to the church. in the temple we covenant to consecrated ourselves and ALL we have to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. stop trying to separate Christ and the church. You cannot get to a Christ without the church as it is established in the earth in your dispensation.

If what your saying is that we should NOT teach and encourage activity and belief in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the day they are born, you are gravely mistaken. No Protestant religion or alternative belief will save them. You might as well be saying “Alright Timmy, drugs are a thing, you can do them or not. It’s up to you.”

On paper this sounds great, but the truth of the matter is this. The Church if Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true church on the Earth. failing/refusing to teach your children this is a huge failure and you will likely end up in some sort of condemnation. My issue growing up was that I naturally had questions and never bought into the verbal heuristics and catch phrases of the church. When learning that Joseph Smith was the only one that physically saw the plates (ie not through a vision but in person) and later the plates were taken back by angel Moroni, my first thought was “well that sure is convenient!”. On a few occasions, someone would ask a leader or teacher about why women could t have the priesthood and it was met with the comment “Goodness, I wouldn’t want the priesthood! That is a lot of work.” And call it good. This made me so irritated. Here is what I see as a healthy approach to teaching the gospel. Teach your children this is the true church. Teach from the church manuals, from general conference talks and the scriptures. Have a questioning attitude. When having FHE and your 9 year old kid asks “What are 1769 King James Version edition errors 3 doing in the Book of Mormon? A purported ancient text? Errors which are unique to the 1769 edition that Joseph Smith owned?” Don’t use humor to disregard the question. Say “I don’t know, let’s try to find the answer” and show them how you would go about finding the answer. Show them that it is ok to notice contradictions in the religions. Growing up I saw them all the dang time. I asked my seminary teacher once and he snapped at me (probably cause I snapped at him first). Every contradiction I found growing up has been answered by simple doctrine already taught in the church that I hadn’t put together fully in my mind. Teach tour children to see potential contradictions or bad teachings as simply gaps in their knowledge (it always will be) and figure out how to overcome it. Their is a certain letter written by an apostate member of the church full of questions the church “won’t answer”. It is famous for causing thousands of members to lose their faith. I read it all in one night (it’s about 150 pages) and I had an incredible experience. There were SO many great questions that left me pondering deeply for quite a long time. I learned so much that night just from reading the questions, pondering, reading church source material and looking for answers. I was able to answer pretty much all the questions using church sources published long before this letter. This is the true church and there are answers to every question. You just have to be patient and search (I once waited 3 years for a troubling question of mine to be answered). So ya, teach your kids all that your parents taught you, but include and incourage the asking of questions.
