Tough Grits Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 Hey...does this mean I need to stop calling my son Bubba????? :lol:Actually that is just his nickname. I have a boy's name. I like my real name. Well, I go by my middle name because I HATE my first name. Too girly. I named my daughter with a "boy's" name. I bet nobody can guess my name!!!! LOL LOLActually, both of my sons have names that girls have now taken over!!!!!But all of them are easy to say on sight. However, people ALWAYS had trouble saying my first name AND my middle name. I think it is more because people don't slow down and actually read my names...they just see the letter configuration and think that they have got it! Yeah, nobody can say my married last name either. It is a German name, where the second vowel says it's name, rather than the first like English speakers are taught. Oh well.I think I heard that Matthew McConaughey's brother named his son Miller Lite. Quote
candyprpl Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 Many, many years ago there was a Texas Governor whose name was Hogg and he named his twin daughters, Ima an Ura. I don't know about those Texans!!! My parents were from Texas -- my dad's last name, Cotten. They named me Candace (on my birth certificate) but called me Candy. But....I didn't mind being Candy Cotten. It got me a lot of snickers the first day of school when the would say the last name first -- I liked the attention. But later on when I got into my twenties I didn't like the attention that the name Candy brought me. I would get rude remarks from people -- use your imagination on that one. So I insist now being called Candace. My family is the only ones that get away with calling me Candy. I know I use candyprpl as my username, go figure. Quote
pam Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 I grew up with someone who's name was Candy Apple. No joke. Quote

MarginOfError Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 Anyway, the story behind Orangejello and Lemonjelo are only urban myths. As far as I know, they don't exist. You'd like to think so, but my wife worked with the administrator of their elementary school and has verified the account. Quote
hordak Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 Kids who stand out are embarrassed and it needs to be stopped.I think it's a great idea to prevent parents from making decisions that will torment there kids like being poor for example. You should have to have an income of $40,000 before having kids so you can buy them all the name brand clothes they need to fit in.If your child is has red hair you should dye it.If they are a minority at there school the should go to a different one. Sounds like a great place to me eh komrads. Glad i don't live there. Quote

mightynancy Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 When I was a teen, we had a Shannon Shannon in our stake. :) It was the result of a young lady taking on her step father's surname. She was cute enough to pull it off!I can't list names of people I currently know, especially kids - I wouldn't want to hurt their feelings if they (or their parents) read this! But seriously, some people really need to think before they name.Oooh! I just remembered this site! Have y'all seen the Utah Baby Namer? It's a scream! The Utah Baby Namer Quote
Iggy Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 Also grew up with a guy who's last name was Elder. So when he went on a mission....Elder Elder One of the missionaries that taught my Mom in South Dakota was Elder Elder. His companion was Elder Blood. Quote
Iggy Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 I went to school with a Charles C Charles. We called him Chucky. A co-worker of mine when I was waiting tables in Big Sky Montana named her daughter Blueberry. She said it was a family name. The name fit the girl too- When my little sister was about 10, Dad told her she had to marry a man with the last name of Ball or Clear. Her first name is Crystal. The next day she came home from school and tearfully told us that she was going to die an old maid 'cause none of the boys at school had last names of Ball or Clear. She was such a funny kid - too bad she grew up and became a grouch! Quote

Truegrits Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 The tradition in my family is, that our given first name is the name of a relative (usually still living) but we are called by our middle name...My first name is my mothers name, but I went by my second name.My daughters first name is my sisters name, but she goes by her middle name... My granddaughters first name is my name, but she goes by Ryan...etc.My sister was given a feminized first name in honor of our uncle Merrill, which is Cherrill...she, of course went by her middle name, luckily, as it turned out, because she married a man named Merrell...she could have gone through life as...Cherrill Merrell...how gross... Quote
breeb Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 I used to work at the parking services at Salt Lake Community College. I saw a lot of funny things but learned to keep myself under control. People tripping up stairs, running into the glass doors, all sorts of things. Anyway, one day I had a kid hand me his paper work to purchase his parking permit. As I looked down at the paper it read Last Name: Head First Name: Richard I tried my hardest, but couldnt hold it in. My face was turning red. He noticed I was struggling and said as calm and understanding as could be, "Its my name isnt it?" I appologized and he said, "Its ok. It happens all the time. My parents are from England and they dont use that term over there." I worked at the college for 6 years and came across a lot of crazy names. Most of them were foriegn so it wasnt that shocking, but when I saw this clean cut post-missionary boy standing in front of me named Richard Head I could control myself. Quote
