Did you all see this on the churches website?

"The Gospel Principles manual contains information on 47 core principles of the gospel for personal study and teaching. In 2010 and 2011, this manual will be used in Melchizedek Priesthood and Relief Society classes, as well as the Gospel Principles class for investigators and new members. The manual is available online in multiple media formats and languages."

I knew that a new edition was coming but I didn't know they would be using it in RS and MP. What does that mean for gospel essentials teachers like me? Does that mean some people will get a double dose? Or is my position just become obsolete? Does anyone know?

Some people will get a double dose.

The thing is, in EQ and RS they are to be taught in order. In Gospel Essentials the order is left up to the needs of the members attending the class... probably up to the mission leader or instructor.

So, it is very unlikely they will get a double dose in the same day. :)

THE FOURFOLD MISSION OF THE CHURCH

  • Perfect the Saints
  • Redeem the dead

Well, I would think since it'll only be 2nd and 3rd Sundays that the GP manual would be used in RS and MP, that it shouldn't be long before you get way ahead of where they are in the lessons.

I actually think this could be a really good thing for new members and investigators. They'll get a double dose of very important gospel lessons in short order, which should help the topics sink in. Also, they'll get to hear the lesson once with other newbies like themselves, and then again with more "seasoned" members who can offer new input on the subject during discussions.

It should be interesting!

As Ward Mission Leader I am also our Gospel Essentials teacher. No your position is not obsolete. It will still be taught in GE class as well as RS & PrstHood classes. Only 2 lessons per month will be taught in the other classes so it will take two years to go through it. While a few will get double doses of lessons I expect that they will be treated differently. GE class will continue to present the information from the perspective of the needs of new members or investigators. The RS&PrstHood will take a more in depth look at the same information.

I think it will be good for long term members to get reminded of the basic doctrine. Last year we had an adult seminary class one per week. I started bringing the GP book with me to correct members understanding of basic doctrine which had gotten misremembered or confused by some individuals over the years. This year the class is much more on track and I have only had to bring it out once. Also it might remind members that new comers don't have an understanding of many things they take for granted and they need to be more aware of this.

The biggest concern I have is when members attend GE class with an investigator or new member I have to keep reminding them to not go past the depth the manual is designed to teach. With more depth of the manual being taught it will be harder to keep members from going deeper then they should.

Our supply came in and I looked at them, they are the same as what we have been using other then the question for discussion is before the section instead of at the end and the chapters are no longer divided into units. They took out the hymn's but put in many more pictures which is nice. I didn't go through each chapter word for word but I skipped around and compared the new to the old and found no content differences.

4th mission of the church is tied into the 14th article of faith.

We will hold many and all meetings, we need to meet as often as possible in order to further discuss the same things discussed in other meetings. This is to cover those who don't write things down from the first five meetings something was said in and for High Priest how fall asleep after 10 minutes.

Any time three or more members are within 5 miles of each other a meeting shall be called. In order to better prepare for meetings members who attend meetings will receive training from a meeting training teacher. Pre meetings to discuss what will be discussed in meetings will be encouraged as will post meeting meetings to review the things covered in the meeting.

I loved teaching out of that book, and was sad when they released me. Then 4 years later, I got to teach it again, and was sad again when they released me. Now as EQ sec, I get to teach it again!

Maybe a quarter to a third the stuff I have to say on this board is based on simple eternal truths that the Gospel Principles manual helped me figure out.

I managed to scoop the bishopric with the news. By the time they heard about the manuals, I already had mine, and was 4-5 chapters into it, comparing aginst the old version, marking every new word, every change. Not much has changed. Maybe the biggest change is including the Proclomation on the Family stuff (the old book came out just barely before the Proclomation), and clarifications on same-sex stuff. They shuffled some chapters around, added, changed, or removed some scritpural references here and there, de-emphasised some things and emphasized other things. Mostly minor.

There are a number of changes that are being made. To begin, it is my understanding that all the references to Mormon Doctrine have been removed. The new edition also, reportedly, downplays or eliminates some teachings such as whether or not faithful members can become gods, if God was always a god, heavenly parents, were Adam and Eve the progenitors of the human race, and whether or not the organization of the latter-day Church is complete.

Some have speculated that the changes reflect a move by the Church to distance itself from some of the more non-core beliefs that have been debated at great length here and throughout the past century and a half. Other interpret the changes as a desire to get back to basics. Personally, I think both are perfectly plausible solutions.

Well, it is the Gospel "Essentials" manual.

I was visiting another forum where these changes were being discussed. It seemed to many of the posters there that the church was backing away from its doctrine. Personally, I like the distancing from what I feel is intelligent speculation. I don't think the change compromises the churches position. Maybe it just reaffirms what we do know officially and what we don't.

That's a very good way to articulate it. Personally, I think people are putting too much stock in the book anyway. People who rely on Gospel Principles to identify doctrine are just waiting to be disappointed. The thing that needs to be made clear is that the only pure source of doctrine are in the Standard Works. The new manual should be used as a starting point for diving into the scriptures.

Shouldn't that be:

4. Go to meetings? (Not talking about sacrament here)

I've often lammented, on a Sunday, trying to plan our family meals, when we had a morning block, meetings in the afternoon followed by other meetings in the night why the Church was so bent on doing everything they possibly could to prevent the family from being together.

Personally one of the reason I don't go to Family Home Evening with the singles ward I'm in is because it's Church from 1:00-4:00, then FHE at 7:30-8:30ish and then a ward prayer at 9:00 (9pm activities are a pet peeve of mine, I may be in college but I've morning classes, we don't all roll out of bed at noon). I suppose if my family lived in another city I'd probably be more inclined to go, but as it stands spending from 1:00-4:00 and 7:30-9:30ish plus travel time seems a little much. All told I'd only really see family from ~4:30pm to 7pm on Sundays, I feel bad for the Bishopric and other leadership.

Then everyone likes to home teach on Sundays (I understand why though).

Perhaps somewhat similar to Brother Palmer's idea of moving to a more Christ centered approach?

So, I kind of get a little excited to see who the next prophet manual well be. I know there are still some out there they haven't done. (Some people thought it would be Pres Hinckley but I didn't see that happening).

Then I was on LDS.org and saw this

I assume the church is going to go back to Prophets teachings. I mean they could start over with Brigham Young again.

But for now its Gospel Principles manual

There's no need to go back to Brigham Young again. We've only done five or six of the latter-day prophets. I wonder why they're switching to Gospel Principles in the middle of the prophet series, but I have no doubt that the Brethren have a specific purpose in mind.
