mountainrider Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 Have barcoded Temple Recommends been discussed here yet? Our ward is currently getting everyone theirs right now. The reason given was to improve security at the Temple. My question: Is there really that big of a problem with people sneaking into the Temple with phoney recommends? I heard that the church will now be able to tell if you go to the Temple at least once a month and if you do, your tithing goes down to 8%. Quote

FrankJL Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 Lets just get past all the non-sense and really modernize the church. If we are going to do it, lets do it right. Skin implanted RF ID chips.... Quote
Jason Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 I can see the fundies now: "They have the mark of the BEAST!" "You won't be able to buy food in Utah without the card/mark!" Quote

CrimsonKairos Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 I guess even the General Authorities have to get barcodes now. When I was trained to work in the temple, they said if you ever are working the temple entrance and someone shows you a gold credit-card looking recommend, they're a GA and they can go anywhere they want. Except maybe the prophet's private room on the fourth floor. At least, he has a private room on the Seattle Temple's fourth floor...but I'd guess it's the same elsewhere as well. Maybe like a modern Holy of Holies. Quote
StrawberryFields Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 WOW! A Barcoded Temple Recommend? See the things you can learn at LDS Talk? Quote
miztrniceguy Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 they mentioned them this past week in my ward.......not sure how i feel about them. Gold recommend...hmmm.....is Platinum a higher level?...can i earn cash back for frequent visits? Quote

The wife and I got ours upgraded a couple weeks ago....looks the same as the old ones except it has a little barcode on it....it really makes sense for many reasons....say a member is found unworthy to attend the Temple...the Bishop simply has the recommend invalidated....when the member becomes worthy again it's validated. Also it keeps people who get them under false pretenses (stolen etc.) from selling them on Ebay!Works for me! Quote
Jason Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 Honestly it seems pretty silly. Really, who's beating down the doors to get in? You can't get your members to go, let alone the rest of us. Quote

pam Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 Amazing you would say that. Just in my lifetime we have gone from about 12 temples to over 100. Obviously someone is using them. Quote

Currently they are good for two years. This could immediatly affect someone say they get caught at a bar or Hooters. Quote
BenRaines Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 What? We can't go to Hooter's? But they have great chicken wings. :) Ben Raines Quote

You can't get your members to go, let alone the rest of us. Jason,A friend from school works as cook in the Provo, Temple cafeteria. He told me they have had problems with people using missing/stolen recommends to take inappropriate/unapproved pictures, attending the ordinaces, and in a few cases (in Provo at least) defacing the inside of the temple. I like the idea of keeping people out who are going to do things there that the church does not approve of.Aaron the Ogre Quote
Jason Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 First of all, HOOTERS is nothing to lose a recommend over. I've been twice, and was utterly disssapointed both times. In fact, if you're in Utah, even the so-called strip clubs are nothing to lose your recommend over. The girls are covered in all the right places....just like any given beach in the state. As for the number of temples...methinks it's an artificial demand. I'm sure someone here can provide numbers either way, but even when I was still LDS, I thought they were just trying to make it more convenient for the handful of members who actually wanted to go. (Could be wrong here though.) As for defacing and stuff....that's just plain ignorant. But will the barcodes really make a difference? Won't ignorant people still deface? Quote
CrimsonKairos Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 If the Church is going to get serious about temple security, they need guards--perhaps armed--manning the counters at the entrance, not the old guys with bad eyesight. No offense to old guys with bad eyesight...my grandpa fits that description and he's an okay guy. Quote

a-train Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 I got mine over a year ago. Our temple district got them on a trial basis. They are now converting the rest of the US. The real reason is more convenience in tracking temple attendence. This is not on an individual basis really, but it is used to see where the people are coming from and how often. Perhaps if a certain area was very temple going, it would be more likely to get a temple than a lacking area. Or, perhaps a temple would be placed in an area where attendance is very low in order to promote more attendence in that area. Regardless, I see little improvement in 'security' with the bar code when there is no photo I.D. involved. I just don't see how this would enhance 'security'. Besides, was a recommend ever intended as a security measure in the first place? -a-train PS Who says the temple security ISN'T armed? Quote
StrawberryFields Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 First of all, HOOTERS is nothing to lose a recommend over. I Know that Jason. The thing is I said that because I have never been to one. Quote
gabelpa Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 Barcode reccomends haven't made it over to the UK yet, but from the LDS Clark's mailing list, as soon as you get your barcode reccomend, get it laminated. The ink used to make the barcodes has been known to smudge and make the barcode hard for the machines to read -Gabelpa Quote
Guest sola'lor Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 I agree these new barecode wont improve security unless there is a picture ID associated with it. Unless a picture shows up when they scan people could still get in who buy theirs from e-bay. Quote
sixpacktr Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 People who want to can get around anything. It seems to me that a while back (and I'm talking in the 80s) they had magnetic strips that they used in the temples. You 'swiped in' before your session, and when you came out you 'swiped out'. That way they knew if that person's work was done and who had done it. I don't see this as much different. It is simply a way to use some of the modern technology to prevent some from getting in that shouldn't. But if someone is bound and determined, they will get in. I don't think there is anything that is in the temple that hasn't been broadcast to the world, and those that have done it will have a price to pay. Can you imagine having an armed guard at the temple? What message would that send? What if they had to use force? I just don't see it. Quote
Moksha Posted August 12, 2007 Report Posted August 12, 2007 Besides Bar-codes for tracking, pictures and retinal scans for identification purposes might be helpful as well Quote
