Seminary Patrol - Does your Ward do this?

Curious if your Ward has some version of early morning Seminary patrol? We do, and my brain is usually mush at work because of it now. This entails:

1. Two priesthood holders
2. Opening all interior doors and turning lights on throughout the entire building, chapel, sacrament prep room, etc.
3. Walking laps inside the building and occasionally the parking lot
4. Checking rooms, bathrooms for youth & strangers, etc.

Does your ward do this? We have done this for about 3 years as a direct response to an early morning Seminary situation that involved unwanted advances from a YM to a YW. This took place in the the woman's bathroom. Unfortunate, YES, but a fairly bad apple spoiled it for the bunch.

p.s. Not to start the debate again... but yes the woman's bathroom smells worse than the guys;)

Hmm.  When I was in early morning seminary, it was held at the seminary teacher's home.  While the rest of his/her family slept in other rooms.  Seems like a good solution to me - too small of a space for the YM to be alone with the YW - even if one went to the bathroom, the other following would be more than obvious...
(Church was 30+ minutes away - no way were we going there for seminary.)

Clearing the building as soon as it's unlocked isn't a bad idea, but it seems a little awkward to have them checking the women's room once people might be using it.  Maybe you just need a YW self defense class.

And don't knock good self defense classes; I got partnered with a 13 year old girl who might weigh 85 pounds at a class last week and even as a white belt she could flatten me with the beginner techniques when she got determined.  They've got really sharp elbows at that age.

Yep, I was in a Ward in Alabama similar to that... good times. There were only about 7 students and we met with the teacher at her home, much harder to get into trouble in a setting like that.

I have never heard of such extensive measures taken before.  I'm guessing this is a special thing put place specifically in your area do the history of that incident.

I believe this is becoming my conclusion too. The "incident" was enough to have the YM arrested and sent to juvenile prison, so I think it got everyone on the better to be safe than sorry moving forward.

Yes, it is awkward, BUT since this is were the incident occurred, I have to suck it up, knock on the door, announce my presence, etc. and go in a check several times each morning. We should fly you out for a couple of YW lessons in self-defense I suppose;)

Several times?  Just how long does seminary last?  I cannot remember ever using the seminary teacher's bathroom.  So, really, they can't go before they leave home and after they get to their next destination (back home or school)?

Whoa!  Yeah, that's a very good reason to institute patrols.

My big dog, Chomp, enjoyed going on "Patrol" (was trained to respond by going on a walk around the perimeter of the property, and / or around the inside of the house - depending on where we were when the command was given).  He would have scared the living daylights out of those seminary kids.  So, I say, get yourself a good dog named Chomp, and train him to escort young women to the restroom and stand guard outside the door (or inside if there are two doors). :)

Here's a picture of him near the end of his life - he was quite the handsome pup.  (Lab + Great Dane, ~ 100 lbs)

You would think so. We have about 70 kids (3 wards worth) in attendance. The 4 teachers have their hands full and then there are the kids who try to not show up to class and head directly to "hang out" in the bathroom instead. ugh.

Holy cow, batman!  You must be in Medium-Density Zion - too few for release-time seminary, too many for in-the-seminary-teacher's-home. :(

Love it!  Too bad I don't have a picture of Chomp snarling - we could make badges for you to wear on your patrols. :D

Doesn't have to snarl.  "Speak softly and carry a big stick".

They're teenagers - I think the snarl might help.  But either way, I just think a picture of the right, "normal" guy you see all meek and mild at church every Sunday, but now he's snarling, might give one pause... :)

Nowhere near ready to teach yet.  Just makes more sense for her to learn how to defend herself against an adult male twice her size.  (After all, it's generally not other 13 year olds she needs to worry about being abducted by, nor the lone female instructor who's about 4'11".)

Check around; lots of good dojos offer a short self defense course for women and good group rates.

Weren't there any GAs who boxed in their younger days?  That could make for a good photo.

It would seem that I grew up in a very different era.  The biggest problem with the youth was my own doing when I thought it would be really funny to spike the punch at a youth dance with methylene blue.  For those of the forum that are not acquainted with methylene blue – it, in essence changes a person’s urine to blue.  Still not sure why this so upset the young women and their leaders – But judging from the @estradling75 avatar – she would of found the whole thing amusing?

Odd, I always thought carebears, like most children's cartoon animal things that don't wear clothing...  Well...   Can't think of an appropriate way to ask how exactly one goes about checking...

Do we like leave out a cigar on one chair, and rouge on another chair, or something, and see where you go sit?

Handy feature the evening before a drug test.
