Vort Posted August 4, 2017 Report Posted August 4, 2017 While cleaning out the garage, I generated a pile of unmated gloves. When I tried to mate them up, I found that I had 21 total gloves that made 6 pairs. This left me with nine unmated gloves. Curiously, of these gloves, eight were for the right hand. I am no statistician, but I believe that the odds that eight of nine randomly chosen gloves being right-handed is 9/29, or about 1 in 57. If this is a random event, then having eight of the nine be left-handed gloves would be equally interesting, so I'll double the probability of this unusual one-handed dominance to be about 1 in 23, roughly 3%. Not astronomical odds by any means, but not exactly likely. What do you think? Is the fact that I and my family are right-handed somehow at the root of this strange preponderance of right-handed gloves? Or is it all just a random occurrence? Quote
Backroads Posted August 4, 2017 Report Posted August 4, 2017 (edited) Bah. Some sticker bushes had stealthily invaded my garden, so I went to the garage for some work gloves. Actually found a matching pair. No right-handed only gloves in this house. As for the math, I do like to think your family is a factor in the right-handed glove plethora. Now that you raise the issue I observe that I typically have left-handed work gloves without mates. I am left-handed. My sampling is less than half of your sampling. I suspect you'll require more participants. Sunday21 and Backroads 2 Quote

You can have ten pairs of socks of different colors and patters, but one sock out of the pairs will eventually be missing until you have five random pairs. There is only one proven, scientific reason for this: gremlins. Edited August 4, 2017 by Jojo Bags SilentOne and Sunday21 2 Quote
zil Posted August 4, 2017 Report Posted August 4, 2017 But at least we know where the missing sock goes: Quote Hozone (ho' zohn) - n. The place where one sock in every laundry load disappears to. Sunday21 1 Quote

He and his 8 left handed children each took one of the left handed gloves. I told them you were right handed so they figured you wouldn't miss them. SilentOne 1 Quote

No, seriously... Out of the 4 members in my family, 3 are right-handed and 1 is ambidextrous. The ambi kid prefers to use his left hand when strength is involved - like using pipe cutters. And he is always complaining about not finding left-handed glove! And I sill don't know where the left gloves go. My gloves - I have small hands so none of them can use my gloves - are always in there as a pair. Edited August 16, 2017 by anatess2 Quote
