  1. I'm still reeling from spending nearly $20 on a stupid mug for my husband's Christmas present. I kept telling myself it was Christmas and something he really wanted, but I think I'm gonna make him use that dang mug for EVERYTHING, including gargling mouthwash. TWENTY BUCKS FOR A MUG!!!!

I can't wrap my head around a pen costing more than $20.....

One frustration is that my oldest brother lives next door and watches out for her, and he has apparently talked to her about these things several times, and recently. I'm starting to feel like we need to take some things over from her, but I don't even know how to start that conversation. Right now I have access to her account to pay her bills for her, but that's as far as it goes.

I'm so sorry, Eowyn. That has to be a difficult decision and conversation.

  3. I'm curious as you are. I've been thinking about getting new temple dress and ceremonial clothing. I'm nervous to buy a dress online as I'm pretty picky about my clothes and how they fit. It scares me to choose a dress without trying it on first (and I'm not too keen on returning a bunch of dresses before I find one that I like).

I've thought about just waiting until we get to Utah again, but other than the distribution center, I don't know where to go to buy a temple dress.

So, no contribution from me, except to say I'm interested in replies to this thread as well.

  4. During this awful election, I've been trying to really understand the opponents viewpoint. I mean, I am actually trying to understand the fear, hatred, reasons for believing what they believe. I'm not looking to be convinced they are correct, but to understand.

This is just one example of a belief that I just don't understand. Why is it ok to "boycott" one thing but not the other? I really wish I had someone I thought could actually answer my questions without turning it into a tirade. I just don't know if any of my FB friends are in a place where they can do that. Which I find extremely sad.

Very true. I think bakers and fashion designers both have the right to refuse service to anyone they wish. But only the Christian will be called out for it, sadly.

One of my friends on FB posted about M. Trump having the fashion dude refusing to dress her. She compared it to bakers who refuse to make cakes for same-sex weddings. Her very left sister posted that it is not an equal comparison. I never could understand her reasoning....something about one is for fashion and being completely volunteer (so, it's ok to "discriminate") and the other being a profit business (and therefore, not ok to "discriminate"). I finally had to stop reading it since I just couldn't see the distinction (in her eyes).

Can anyone explain this thought process to an obviously obtuse dunce (that's me, in case you missed it)?

PS. I offer to send you all the Filipino ingredients that are not found in regular grocery store.  Like the noodles...

It's my Christmas gift to you.

    You are so very kind!

We have several Asian markets nearby and my cow-orker said that there is a Filipino one near where my dad lives.

Anatess, which pancit do you like better? Why do you like it better than the other? I'm more inclined to use the rice noodles just because it's different than egg noodles, but I'm curious on what you like better. What packet flavorings do you like to use for pancit? What brand? I can swing by the market when I go to dad's again to see if they have it. If not, then I'll be PMing you my address.  :D

@pam have you had both kind of noodles for pancit? Which do you like better, the rice or egg noodles? Why?

If you're interested in Korean cuisine, let me  know.

Oh, yes! I love Korean food (at least the bit I've had).

Asian food, in general, makes me nervous to make. Other than making rice (and we don't have a rice maker, so it's not as good) or using packets of flavoring. I don't know why, a recipe is a recipe. But, I'm just intimidated to attempt to make Asian.

  8. I don't think I can do the spaghetti thing. I know it's traditional, but we do spaghetti all the time.

I have a co-worker who is Filipino and is supposed to get me her mom's lumpia recipe. If she doesn't come through, I may be bugging you, anatess.

What's pancit, @anatess2 ? Is it easy to make?

I'm pretty intimidated at attempting lumpia, so I'd rather not make more than 1 recipe that's intimidating.

And what would be an easy, but traditional dessert?

@Dravin is a gneiss guy, but it's easy to take him for granite.

We like to get all punny. He isn't hungry, he has no apatite. Geologists will rock your world!

And have you seen the Big Bang Theory when Sheldon laments about geology and how it's not a real science? Dravin laughs but then he goes on a rampage to the television to explain why geology is real and better than physics.....

FYI, I see evidence of Dravin's continued existence just about weekly.  I don't know how or why this happened, but whenever he logs on to Steam and starts playing a game, I get a little popup window.  I think he sent me a buddy request or something at one time.

I think about Dravin and Beefche every time I see that popup.  :)

You're probably gonna see him a lot more soon. He's getting a new computer which will increase his ability to play his games. I joke with him that I look forward to seeing him in the new year sometime.

  11. My husband and I have a tradition for Christmas Eve that we pick a cuisine and make it for our International Christmas Eve. This year, we've been thinking of Filipino food. I will do some research, but does anyone have any ideas for a main course, a side, and a dessert? Here's looking at you @anatess2 and @Bini (I know she hasn't been here for a while, but I always hope).

We aren't set on Filipino, so if you have some other cuisines in mind, I'm open. We've done Greek, German, Irish, Italian, and Spanish. Interestingly enough, we haven't done Bulgarian....

  12. When I worked in an actual office, each Christmas we would get cookies delivered to us from our VP. Cheryl's cookies were so good! I loved their sugar, snickerdoodle, double chocolate and regular chocolate chip cookies.

I also have a weakness for Oreos. I have a difficult time controlling myself around them (which means I get sick from eating too much), but the new Thins are helping me to do better.

  13. Are you sure Southern Beau isn't actually a belle? "Read my mind" sounds very much like a woman thing to do.

I would suggest doing nice things for him that you think he would like, doing nice things for him that you think you'd like done to you and then telling him he has to communicate what he wants/needs with you. Just guessing isn't gonna work for the long haul. Someone is going to get feelings hurt or feel frustrated/angry at some point.

  14. I wouldn't care about any societal feelings for having a baby after age 40. I would be concerned about my own health, the health of the baby, and that when that baby is an adult, I'll be getting on in years and likely have to rely on that child to care for me.  I am not sure I could handle the physical parts of being pregnant at age 40 nor the physical requirements of caring for a baby and toddler in my 40's or 50's.

I don't care if I would feel out of place around new mothers who are in their 20s. Friends are friends whether in the same stage of life as I or not.

  15. We looked into it and the one we wanted to go on during the off season wasn't really that bad.  I wanna say around $700/ticket. But that's just the ticket for a 7 day cruise with food and excursions. Since it started in Budapest, we would have to get a flight there and back and possibly stay in an hotel overnight there and back. That will increase the cost significantly.  Still, it's something that I think we will eventually do...after several years of saving up for it.
