Looking for some outside perspective on having children
Maureen replied to Backroads's topic in Support in Hard Times
Sorry to hear your news @Backroads. Probably the best people to ask for advice are other parents with CF children. They can give you a better idea of what to expect as your child gets older and the ups and downs of being healthy and those times when they are not healthy. M. -
Marriage 101 FOR DUDES. From a totally unqualified man
Maureen replied to Overwatch's topic in General Discussion
I understand the tradition, I'm just not in favour of it. You said you asked your mother, did your fiance ask your parents for permission to marry you? Do all Costa Ricans follow this tradition? M. -

I agree with this idea but it works both ways. Your daughter will be marrying not just her future husband but also his family. But you don't expect her to ask her future mother-in-law for permission (symbolic or actual) to marry her son. This idea that a man is not showing respect if he doesn't ask for his future father-in-law's permission (whether symbolic or actual) is ridiculous. I can understand wanting both families to give their blessings for the marriage, but this one sided tradition of permission is just demeaning in my opinion. M. -

Respect goes both ways. If a couple is responsible enough to want to be married, the parents of both the man and woman should also show respect and realize that these young adults have every right to make their own decisions. M. -
I didn't notice during the 3 periods but from watching the celebrations I'm noticing a lot of Caps fans in the stands. M.

YAY!!!!! The right team wins. It was definitely the Capitals turns. So happy for the Capitals and especially Ovechkin. M.

Permission? I'm assuming your oldest daughter is an adult. I'm agreeing with @Fether regarding this tradition. The only person's answer that matters when a man proposes, is the woman's. A woman is not the property of her father (not like in the olden days), so it is very condescending to think that a father's permission is required for his adult daughter to marry. If you think some kind of tradition is necessary to show respect, I can see asking the woman's parents for their blessing, but that's as far as I would go. Men can show respect to their future parents-in-law without having to cater to condescending traditions. M. -
Happy Birthday @NightSG and @Sunday21!! Getting older is way better than the alternative. M.

I checked out the meaning online too but wasn't sure I was getting it, so thought @Overwatch could provide a better meaning since they were his words. I'm guessing it's his way of saying "So there!" M.

Hate to disappoint because I do not understand you. I haven't read many of your posts but it appears you don't like answering questions. Yes, part of my post had a sarcastic tone but I do sincerely want to understand what you mean by comments I'm not familiar with, whether they're rude or not. Since you're not interested, I'll try my best to ignore you. M.

Seriously @Overwatch, you added those words at the end of your post; I'm assuming you had a reason. You must know what you meant by it, I'm asking for clarification. Unless of course, if it's something rude you are trying to convey and you don't want to explain the rudeness. M.

I'm not familiar with this slang, what does it mean? M.

Are you under the impression that when you go into a Hooters restaurant there's a rule that says, you must stare at the servers' bosoms to get served? I'm sure there are no such rules. I'd bet they'd be happy to serve you if you treated them with respect no matter what they are wearing. M.

Agree and don't take unnecessary penalties. M.

The Capitals win! Holtby is amazing! M.

Can I Find Out if my Ex Was Allowed to Go to the Temple
Maureen replied to TeancumFan's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
@TeancumFan, I'm thinking (like zil) only one possible way to find out is from social media (Facebook), if either your ex and/or his spouse are on FB. But if you do find out he did get sealed, how would that effect you? Could you accept it and move on, or would it just cause more problems? M. -
Your wife is wrong. The original Ghost Busters was a very entertaining and funny movie. M.

You better be careful or @SpiritDragon is going to get after you for using such language. 😏 M.

I cannot eat spicy food. I have never even been a fan of pepper but I've noticed that lately I can handle pepper especially on scrambled eggs. If I do get food from a restaurant with a little spice, I get a side of sour cream to tone it down. Everything goes well with sour cream. 😊 M.

Me too. The Capitals have to be extra aggressive. M.

How much personal choice is in living the Word of Wisdom?
Maureen replied to Blossom76's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
"Strong drink" was initially interpreted as hard liquor, and did not include beer or lightly fermented wine The text of the Word of Wisdom forbids "strong drink" (D&C 89:5, 7), which was initially interpreted as distilled beverages (hard liquor). Beer, unfermented or lightly fermented wine, and cider were considered "mild drinks" (D&C 89:17) and therefore acceptable (note that verse 17 specifically permits "barley...for mild drinks"). The complete prohibition of alcoholic drinks of any kind only became part of the Word of Wisdom following the temperance movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries; Presidents Joseph F. Smith and Heber J. Grant supported the movement and Grant made complete abstention from alcohol in any form a requirement for a temple recommend in the early 1920s. https://www.fairmormon.org/answers/Word_of_Wisdom/History_and_implementation M.
