The dividing rod is a metaphor for revealing Gods principles to men and by their personal choices some choose to believe, follow the revelation, while others choose a different way of life.
Referring to Moses time and the act of throwing down his rod in Pharaoh's court was one of Gods way’s to show that his powers were greater than the magician’s.
I think you meant divining rod.

I'm trying to find the talk where President Hinckley made this statement: “To know when these events will occur would take from us much of the self-discipline needed to daily obey the principles of the gospel.”
I've searched and searched. But perhaps one of you would have more luck at finding it than me.

I found a General Conference talk by Jeffrey R. Holland titled "Broken Things to Mend" from April 2006, where he touches on themes that sound similar to what you're describing. While it doesn't have the exact wording you mentioned, it discusses how to "come unto Christ" and how important it is to align our lives with His teachings for healing and salvation.
If you want to check it out for yourself, here is the link to the talk: Broken Things to Mend. 😊
That's about as close as I'm going to get. Thanks so much. Nice to have another reference like LDSBOT.com for general questions.

I saw that one but the one I'm thinking of was a General Conference talk. I just can't seem to find it now. But thank you for trying to help.

Supposedly there is a talk that Jeffrey R. Holland gave regarding the Atonement that states (paraphrasing) "coming unto Christ involves recognizing one’s need for salvation and striving to align one’s life with His teachings."
HELP!! Sound familiar to anyone?

To update the issue noted in San Antonio, some members of the church were not comfortable about the hiring of a Latter-Day Saint. But Bishop Lopes said that reviewed the teachings of their church, and it was allowed. Bishop Lopes is supporting the Latter-Day Saint and ignoring any complaints from the Catholics. Not sure how this will end up, but interesting to see a bishop of the Catholic church take this stand.
Hey I live in San Antonio. BTW, when I lived in Utah, there was a lady in my ward who also played the organ for one of the local Catholic churches. She did it during their Wednesday night masses.

This is me pretty recently. The missionaries in my ward really had no idea, but they did ask me to give people rides places, and that ended up leading to a ton of good for me. One of the reasons for that was feeling legitimately helpful to people. If there's something you genuinely need help with, asking a struggling friend for help with it could do them a lot of good. I'm not going to say it's the case for everyone 100% of the time, but it absolutely was for me.
Sometimes what we need is to take the focus off our own problems or situation.

I've posted an announcement underneath the rules banner. Please take note. This will affect most of those who have accounts.
We're not sure yet when this will take place but we wanted to give people plenty of notice.

99% of the scammers who create accounts here on the forums are all from the same country. Or at least their IP shows them to be from the same country.

I almost got taken in by a scammer using my American Express. Got a call. Caller ID said Amex. Said my card had been compromised and they had tried using it for $700 in Florida at a Target but was flagged because of where it was and the amount. So they tried to get me to do different things. Now the caller ID had the actual number on the back of my card so I thought legit. But during that call, I kept getting another caller trying to call that also said Amex. So I hung up and called the number on my card. Sure enough, the first caller was the scammer and was trying to get all of the information regarding my card. He had even gotten into my account online. So we had to cancel the card, and I had to change all of the stuff on my online account. Now I don't trust anyone. And I'm usually pretty smart regarding these things.

I reworded it.

Interesting because I got a question for Ask Gramps that will be published sometime next week asking the same question. Stay tuned for that.

I realized after I posted that I should have called it "gospel values" instead of "LDS values" as we're not supposed to, per the style guide of the church, use "LDS" to refer to the church. But I can't figure out how to edit the title.
Fixed it for you.

So, he has questions. He's learned things about the behaviors of specific Jews, and other things from history (at least some of which seem dubious). These questions and the answers he's found (presumably outside the Church) are "ruining" his life.
That is not the same as saying, "Jews are ruining my life."
I guess it's a matter of interpretation. In his #3, I feel like he is basically saying that because of the things he knows (about Jews) it's ruining his life. So it's just how I'm interpreting it.

Let's be fair, Carb. He said the questions are ruining his life.
ObviouslyPresumably, in searching for answers to his questions, he has fallen into the anti-Semitism rabbit hole.To be fair to Carb, Gecko said: I genuinely think these things I now know/see are ruining my life. He didn't say the questions are ruining his life but what he knows is.

Hello everyone, I am a hobbyist historian and recently returned RM. I have a few questions regarding the LDS position on Judaism that are ruining my life and I desperately need answers. Here they are:
1. Do the Jews have to be converted to the LDS faith in order to build the temple in Jerusalem before Christ's return? Or can they make their own temple and that counts as a fulfillment of the prophecy?
2. Are the Jews actually cursed to be hated by the world? From my minor research into the subject, it seems as though every place the Jews go they are removed rather quickly afterwards. I believe they have been forcefully expelled form 109 countries for various reasons.
3. Finally the most difficult question that I am genuinely asking in good faith because I do not understand why but every time I ask I am hated for asking it. Nobody ever proves me wrong or states why it is the case, they just say I am evil. Here is the question: Why does it seem as though the Jews contribute the most to the degeneracy in the world? The owner of Pornhub is a practicing Rabbi, OnlyFans is the largest funder of AIPAC (the lobby group for Israel in the USA), and almost all porn companies and cheating websites are owned by Jews. Furthermore Hollywood is almost entirely operated by people of the Jewish faith/ethnicity which promotes the most degeneracy in the modern world. Also the current leaders and old founders of the LGBT and Trans movements are Jewish. Another example is the USSR's leadership was 80% Jewish until the 1950's (which if you know the history of the USSR, you will know that the USSR before the 1950's killed more than triple the amount of people than the Nazis and made religion illegal) when they were removed from the party for having loyalty to Israel rather than the USSR. My final example is mostly anecdotal but every time I see an article saying how white people are evil or how people should not have kids or a movie producer saying ho evil Christianity is, I look up their name and look at the Wikipedia article on them and 9/10 times their grandparents are Jews from eastern Europe. I genuinely think these things I now know/see are ruining my life. I know all Jews are not a monolith but why are they so predominantly the leaders of evil? Is it because they killed Christ and are now cursed until they convert? I am begging for someone to prove me wrong but it just never makes sense. Why is it almost always them? Once again I know they are not all a monolith but it just makes no sense how the leaders/producers of porn/inventors of gay rights/mass immigration proposers are almost always the same background
Wow. Hate much?

Wrong: They were last seen in 1850.
See the "42nd Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology", pg. 506-507 (https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/107718#page/506/mode/1up). The Creeks (specifically the Iskopogis) had the plates in their possession as late as 1850. They were closely examined by a minister who had heard that they might contain Hebrew: The minister found no evidence of writing save for a stamped "AE".
And, though not seen, they were inquired after by one G.W. Grayson in 1917: They apparently still existed, though were in a state of disrepair (pg. 510).
The entire account from Swanton I linked to (pg. 503-510) would make interesting reading for any faithful saint, there's a lot of fodder in there: Mention that there were once plates that did contain writing that have been buried, that they were received from a moral teacher, that they were recieved from some mysterious "other" race, etc. I'm surprised Heartlanders are not all over this one: Aside from a few footnote mentions in Sorenson, this forum post seems to be the only discussion extant in LDS circles discussing this incident.
And we haven't discussed it in 13 years.

I am extremely sensitive to many perfumes, colognes and other scents. Especially those that have a musk base. I can't walk into a store that has incense burning. My throat immediately closes up and I can't breathe. Even something like my neighbor's dryer vent which is right outside my front door leading to the steps makes me gag when she is using the dryer because of the dryer sheets. Pretty much most things I purchase are scent-free. Unless it's something like citrus or vanilla. Vanilla is my happy scent.

Carter also publicly denounced Trump as an illegitimate president elected via Russian interference. More to the point, IMHO, he offered full-throated support to Roe and to abortion-on-demand.
Hearing all these conservative paeans to him is a little surreal—like hearing people praise Arthur Zander for his service as an LDS branch president and completely gloss over the fact that Zander supported Naziism and excommunicated Helmuth Hubener.
Carter may have been a complex character who did some nice things and succeeded in making sure that a camera was there while he did them. But I would venture to guess that when the eternal balances are weighed and self-deception becomes impossible, his role as a powerful and consensual apologist for elective baby killing will weigh heavily on his conscience; and the Grace he spent a lifetime seeking will only come after much more pain than he thought possible.
Interesting because I remember an interview he did oh maybe 15 years ago where he talked about his party and how he wished they were more anti-abortion except in the case of rape, incest or risk to the mother.
