  1. Is it OK to play Clash of Clans? i have two adult sons that do this constantly.
  2. This is Certainly not confined to our faith. This is universal in my experience.
  3. I doubt a de-emphasis, but if there is maybe it's good. Food storage is about 20% of the self reliance pamphlet but ended up as almost the only thing people perceived as valuable IMO. In addition, two years of food storage is totally impractical for the majority of the church members. Even for those that have space for this probably end up wasting most of it because food has a shelf life. People don't eat the type of food stored mostly, and it eventually rots. 72 hours of supplies is a great idea. But the reality is under a serious emergency, water is the most severe limitation to survival.

All true in my experience. The corridor between Salt Lake and Provo is exceedingly hazardous. Re:. LA. IMO mostly decent drivers. One must be to survive in SoCal. The unique caracteristic there is the very high speeds extant when there is any sort of break in the normal logjam. Gator, don't take this personally, but you omitted bad driving in FL. It has a national reputation. Floridumb.
  5. Of course Gluttony is the sin. I will also stat categorically that if you eat more calories than your body will burn, you will gain weight. No excuse will mitigate this reality.
  6. You are not allowing for the time value of money. The govt. has your money, and you are entitled yo a reasonable return on investment. That being said SS at best is only getting one's money back. The govt. is not giving a fair return. The reason for privatizing SS is to remedy this defect, so people will have even more retirement proceeds. if there is filthy lucre, it's the government cheating us.
  7. Context is everything. We can only guess the answer to these questions. TODAY He would maybe serve no alcohol, but certainly he drank those beverages during His lifetime. This is a matter of record. Not sure about the MJ. Apparently there are medicinal uses, so I would say, "the jury is out". IMHO these are difficult questions. We don't really know. Certainly in Mormon culture, there is a big bias against the using of these items, but without context, we can only speculate on the true answers.

  9. Hilarious. It said I was democrat, but I'm not liberal at all. I am fairly tolerant, but my politics are to the right of Genghis Khan.
  10. I don't experience this at all, and I eat out a lot. Many people don't drink alcohol at meals for a variety of reasons. Im old enough to remember being at some very hard drinking lunches (not me!) 30 or so years ago, but it's just not that way anymore. People tend to drink a lot less here in the SF Bay Area than was formerly the case.
  11. I answered without reading all the posts. i had to smile a little. I see that I live on a different plane than most of you. One thousand dollar cars? My payment is $1,252 per month! You can only imagine the insurance and maintenance on a vehicle like this. No, I don't do my own repairs. Actually, I changed the air filter once. $85 for the filter. Labor was free! I wont embarass myself by discussing my housing costs. But.......no consumer debt.
  12. Not in SF Bay Area. Average earners are are renters here. One bedroom apartments rent for $4,000 or more in SF. Not a lot better in other cheaper areas. Rent can suck up a lot of ones disposable income.
  13. Debt is a valuable tool, handled properly. Today's rates are especially attractive for automobiles and real estate. i would never pay cash for a vehicle in today's environment of sub three percent interest. It would be stupid to pay cash in today's investment environment where one can easily make more than that. Similar with housing, although here in the SFBay area, the market is very overheated right now. One must be cautious. Consumer debt is of course to be avoided for non necessities. Business debt is probably beyond the scope of this discussion, but used wisely is the basis of all modern business, no, debt is certainly not a sin. The Church's counsel is wise:. Avoid consumer debt.
  14. Berlin has apparently been taken over by Currywurst restaurants. It used to be just a selection among many. There's even a Currywurst museum! Munich's a great city. Did you know that the second largest (by sales) McDonald's restaurant is located at the Stauchus? Too true. Better you go to Augustiner for down home German food. Dallmayr's on Residenzstrasse for Gourmet delights! Best deli in the world AFAIK. Upstairs for the restaurant. Great museums here.
  15. We seem to have gone far afield here. To the OP, ther are plenty of non abused young women to marry. Marry one of them. Trust me, it's a lot easier. Knowing what I know now about people who have been abused as children, I would have never married my wife. It's a hard road. Not only will you be affected, but so will your children. Think of them, if nothing else.
  16. That too, I suppose. I guess I've stumblied into some kind of Zone here. Not only the son has no apparent means to provide himself certain basics, but I'm told that by adding a wife he will somehow be able to take care of her as well as himself. Sounds like drivel.
  17. In the OP, the son is not even supporting himself. Your comment is facetious.
  18. I personally wouldn't take offense at that particular joke. They were just trying to add additional realism to the movie. AFAIK, and I've read most of his books, Heilein was an admirer of the church. He always saw it as a cohesive group standing on the correct side of an issue. I think the writers of the movie (which has the delicious Denise Richards in it) maybe took a little much license, As for me personally, all my best friends are not members. So take this joking with a grain of salt. I'll give as good as I get in this joking area.
  19. I'm in Berlin now. I just did Berlin Walks which is a take off on the original London Walks. Spent most of the time east of the wall, which pre WW2 was the cultural and governmental part of Germany. Very interesting. Our guide was a history Student of Humboldt university in Berlin. Saw the wall or what's left of it, and many other very cool sights. In a few years the former Imperial palace will be restored, then I'll return. Off to Munich tomorrow.
  20. You should have made the bet, as there was a positive outcome projected. In fact the odds dictate buying 5 chances. This is offset by the chance of sharing the prize with others, however. In the event, the prize was split three ways, so one ticket would have been optimal.
  21. You are, in effect, doing this. Typically the prize has been donated. I never have any expectation to win (and I never have!)

  25. One would think that since marriage is required for one's exaltation that this would receive a lot more attention in one's life. Mormon receptions IMHO are largely an oxymoron. One would think a major blow out would be in order, considering the importance this has in Mormon belief. But not so!
