NeuroTypical
Hot take: There was a backlog of prayers in heaven, and several decades of praying for moisture just got heard. And it's Florida, because https://www.gulflive.com/news/2024/03/how-a-religious-organization-became-floridas-largest-private-landowner.html . The town next to me got slammed and I’m waiting to hear from friends in North Carolina. But we’re still going to work, going to church, doing our hobbies, sending kids to school, and living our lives. LDSGator
My heart breaks for the town where our exchange daughter goes to school. They got slammed and now are expecting round two. For all the jokes about Florida, we’re the toughest people out there. We’ll get slammed, recover, rebuild, and keep on living our lives. Traveler
Climate change is a real thing that has been taking place and evolving for over a billion years in our solar system. About 50 years ago there was a peculiar alignment of Jupiter and Mars with earth which slightly alter the earth’s orbit. In addition, our sun is going through a warming cycle (a solar climate change and warming) that has caused a warming throughout the entire solar system, including the kipper belt. Our entire solar system is orbiting in our galaxy but at a different rate than the radial arms of the galaxy. The one thing we can count on is change and if we are aware of prophesy we will realize that costal areas may not be the best place for 80% of our human race to reside. Our earth is also experiencing an increase in geothermal activity – especially in what is called the pacific rim and Antarctica regions. Note that it was exclusively geothermal activity that ended the last major ice age. The saddest element of all this is that we humans have decided to make this political. Usually in the past such things had religious implications. Is some ways I think that politics has replaced draconian extreme religious controls of populations. Now, here in the USA, we will deal with the use of funds to finance the largest migration of humans in history – leaving a shortage of emergency disaster funds. In light of the current trends towards financial incentivized migrations and financial incentivized war, one would think that the current administration would have no chance in the upcoming election. But in the USA, we are more concerned with emotions (especially the justification of hatred) than we are about moving beyond personal wants and desires than what is needed for peace and harmony. Even peace needs incentives and personal sacrifice which is unlikely without open dialog void of such animosity towards differing opinions – which seemed to me to be the primary theme of our conference this lase weekend. LDSGator
You can tell the veteran residents/snowbirds/newbies by how they react to hurricanes. The ones running around claiming that sky is falling are the newbies. The snowbirds are evacuating because many of them around here live in trailers/rvs. The veteran residents are prepared-but also relaxed. This isn’t our first hurricane, it’s not even our first cat 5. LDSGator
If someone can’t handle hurricanes, Florida isn’t the place for them. It’s not an insult. I couldn’t handle the cold and snow so I left New England. Best choice I ever made. Phoenix_person

If it doesn’t get its act together. It could affect the current election. Already happening. Several people have taken to social media alleging that FEMA employees and other federal officials have threatened arrest and jail time to various individuals who have been using their private aircraft and boats to bring supplies into the area affected by Helen. While it's hypothetically possible that there is some concern these employees have done a terrible job of outlining, conspiracy theories are already in circulation alleging that this is a deliberate act on the part of the government to somehow "punish" the region for one thing or another, with most of these focusing on the punishment being for voting the "wrong" way. Elon Musk has actually been using Twitter / X to call out various FEMA officials and demand explanations for what is or isn't happening. mikbone

LDSGator
Once again, a lot depends on perspective. There’s sadness and depression here of course-you can’t see such devastation and be Pollyanna. But there’s also joy. People helping one another clean up. Calling to check in on you. Helping elderly evacuate. Strangers making sure you are prepared. It all depends on what you want to see. We’ve been beyond blessed/lucky these past ten years living here. Still are. mikbone
mikbone
I was in Houston in ‘88. They were predicting a force 5 Hurricane (might have been Gilbert). A ton of people evacuated the city. It ended up blowing itself out and as it passed over I enjoyed a vigorous sprinkle. The weather predictions sure have improved in the past 30+ years. A day or so back there was a photo on Twitter of a pair of excavators trying to clean up wreckage in order to clear as much of a road as they could. Someone was holding this image up as "proof" that the government was, in fact, actually on the scene and responding. I was one of several people trying to explain to them that this photo simply meant that two people with excavators were at work. It could have been a pair of construction workers racking up some unpaid overtime, or private landowners who had them as part of the equipment for maintaining their property. I'm nervous seeing that traffic as people evacuate, and I imagine it's going to get worse as the Hurricane gets closer. I have a nephew in that area and his mother (her husband, my brother, passed away). I talked to him yesterday evening and he was packing still. I hope he and my SiL make it out safely. They live in St. Pete. Ironically I had a son who lived there up until last year, but is in a safer area now. I just hope that all who are there are safe. PS: I'd say...go up to Georgia...but after what happened to NC with the last one...who knows where is safe these days. On the bright side (for those of you in Utah)...see those things lining the highway there...those are called trees. They grow everywhere and you don't even have to go to the mountains to see them as thick as they are here on the side of the highways! Also note all that green stuff on the ground...that's called grass...and it sort of grows spontaneously in the East...no need to water it...it just grows like everything else. mikbone
10-15’ Storm surge sounds pretty awesome. I hear that Governor DeSantis has suspended all highway tolls. The storm has weakened but gotten bigger. I’ve never been in a Hurricane. I’ve been pretty close to 3-4 tornadoes though. Very exciting!
