  1. I might be flamed for this, but I love Big Love. I know it's not a real portrayal of the real LDS church, and a polygamist would be excommunicated like Barb was. Having the missionaries over before your girlfriend is ready for them will backfire on you. It would look to her as if you're pushing your beliefs on her, and she will break up with you because of her previous negative experience. If she decides that she's ready to meet with them, she will do so on her own time. It might mean that she will never be ready, and if that happens, you should respect her "agency" as you call it and agree to disagree when it comes to religion.
  2. Most boards lock old threads, either because they grew too big or they haven't been posted on in a long time. On occasion, if a thread is interesting enough, someone could start a new thread to continue the one that grew too big.
  3. I'm not LDS, but I think it's best to wait until the divorce is final before dating as that's when society in general considers it to be the right time. I actually waited until long after my divorce was final to begin dating again, but that's just me. I heard rumors that my ex-husband had already been dating before the divorce was final, so it's possible that if that was true, that he was likely cheating on me before I filed for divorce. I went to the doctor after the divorce was filed and got tested for every STD just in case, but fortunately, everything was negative.
  4. I have 2 corgi/German shepherd mixes, who were littermates, and 2 cats, one is a Maine coon who insists on going for walks with the dogs, and the other cat is a domestic shorthair.
  5. The darker, the better for me.
  6. I saw it live in my 4th grade class as that teacher was on board, like most children in school that time.
  7. I second the recommendation for that website. Another thing I recommend is the book, "The Verbally Abusive Relationship" as that helped me when I was also in an abusive marriage to someone just like your husband. I don't blame you for being afraid, as leaving is the most dangerous time for an abused spouse. Getting out now decreases the chances of your children continuing the cycle either as abusers or victims.
  8. I think it would be good if the LDS church also made premarital classes and counseling mandatory before allowing couples to marry in the temple. Even temple marriages aren't immune from divorce these days. As for the original topic, I think the OP should get out now, as what he's doing is abuse, and denying you access to bank accounts is financial abuse. I was in an abusive marriage myself, but I was fortunate enough to get out, and without having any children as I could make a clean break and cut him completely out of my life. When I joined Facebook, the first thing I did was to block him.
  9. I love the Olympics, so I'll be watching.
  10. I even posted an article a while back in the health section that said that it's better to eat fruit than drink juice all the time as even freshly squeezed juice is mostly sugar. Moderation in all things also applies to fruit juice, as it's fine as an occasional treat.
  11. Woooohoooo Saints! That was a great game!
  12. I don't care either way, as "God" means different things to people, not just the Judeo-Christian God. As far as post Katrina New Orleans goes, the lack of law enforcement was what caused a minority of people to become "Godless thugs" as most people didn't do those things, even if they were hungry. Even though New Orleans is known for wild parties during Mardi Gras, it's a very Christian area since it's part of the Bible Belt.
  13. My guess is that Jenny McCarthy and other anti-vax people will say that the retraction of that article was a cover up done by Big Pharma or something.
  14. There was also "September Dawn" which didn't do well at all at the box office. Even the most rabid anti-Mormons didn't see this film, so it must have been really bad.
  15. In states that don't have blue laws, people who work in grocery stores often end up selling alcohol to customers when they're cashiers. Anyone who sells alcohol in any form is required by law to check ID's if someone looks under the age of 30, in order to make sure the person is 21 and over. If someone is caught selling alcohol to someone under 21, they not only face criminal charges, they're fired on the spot.
  16. Personally, I have no problem with any of this, as in order to keep their alcohol license, they will be checking ID's to make sure people are of legal drinking age(21) before selling alcohol. Employees who work where alcohol is available for purchase already know that if they're caught selling it to minors, they will face criminal charges and be fired on the spot.
  17. One way to solve that problem would be to get it sized to where it's slightly snug on the finger.
  18. I saw it on IMAX 3D and it was probably the best movie I've seen in a while. I even loved the trailers in that format, especially the documentary about the Hubble telescope repairs, as it was almost like being there.
  19. It's already come to the point of her needing the information about the women's shelter. You should also be careful since abusive spouses can be dangerous if they think someone is "intimately associated" with the victim. He could also tell her to quit working, which is a form of financial abuse, and a way to further isolate her from her support system.
  20. I'm pro choice, and by that, I mean that women can chose to have an abortion, or she can chose to carry to term. Even though men might try to influence what is done, in the end, the woman has control over her body. Sometimes that means that men are going to be fathers even if they would have preferred her to end the pregnancy.
  21. I was in an abusive marriage, but I got out before the abuse became physical. There was verbal, emotional, financial, and even sexual abuse as he once took nude pictures of me after I fell asleep after marital relations. The financial abuse was that he refused to get a job, yet he got angry when I tried to apply for jobs, and even hated that I was going to finish my BA. He also tried to isolate me from my family and friends, and once tried to figure out my e-mail password. When he refused to get marital counseling with me, I went alone and it was a good thing as my therapist helped me to see that what he was doing is abuse, even if it was never physical. She even helped me to get a plan ready, and I eventually moved out and filed for divorce. I almost got a restraining order because he got so angry when I told him I filed the divorce papers, I thought he would try to harm me physically. The most dangerous time for an abused spouse is when they try to leave. I thank God every day that I got out before becoming pregnant, as there are no children for him to abuse, and I was able to cut him completely out of my life. The divorce became final in 2003 as he at least signed the papers, and after years of therapy, I now am in a relationship with a real man who would never think of treating any woman like my ex does, and treats me as an equal. I also finished my BA and although I got laid off in this recession, I now have another job. My boyfriend is in no way threatened by a woman working, as he is secure enough in his manhood. I still have no children because I would rather be married first.
  22. Drivers who forget that when it's raining that they should slow down and keep more distance between you and the person in front of you. People talking or texting on their cellphones while driving, regardless of the weather.
  23. If there's global warming, chances are that it could be a natural thing as the planet goes through cycles of warming and cooling. Still, it would be very bad in the long run to use up all of the oil reserves, as once it's gone, it's gone. I'm no tree hugger as I prefer that dead trees are removed, but I don't want to wait for a real disaster to be a wake up call, since it could be too late to change things.
  24. I know I've lost weight since I cut way back on my soda consumption, and replaced that soda with water and unsweetened tea, as I'm not LDS.
  25. One thing about smoking, is that several states where the LDS population is a minority do have anti-smoking laws where it's banned in buildings, including bars and restaurants. As a result, many smokers go outside and away from doors in order to get their fix. Another thing about the Wasatch front is that those mountains were formed by earthquakes, and that fault is long overdue for another major earthquake, about the size of what hit Haiti. It's a good reason to always be prepared.
