US-based Terrorist group arrested by government.
ADoyle90815 replied to FunkyTown's topic in Current Events
To be honest, those homegrown terrorists worry me more than radical Islamic ones because they can blend in easier in society, and they claim to be Christian. Also, in Nevada, a LDS talk by Harry Reid had to be canceled when local leaders started to fear for their safety. My Real Life Was Backordered: Political Ranters Need Not Apply -
David Archuleta: Already serving a mission
ADoyle90815 replied to KeithLBrown's topic in General Discussion
I would think he would have a difficult time on a mission, and I don't think he'd get quality converts, instead he'd get those who quit showing up to church as soon as the baptism is over.- 20 replies

I think it's sad that in the LDS culture, people like to get in each other's business when it comes to something so personal, such as family size. I can imagine it's especially difficult for someone with infertility or who has had several miscarriages because there was something genetically wrong with the fetus. The way I see it, it's nobody's business except for the couple and the Lord as to how many children they have. Some married couples have children soon after they're married, while other couples put off starting a family until they're finished with their education.

One issue with NCLB is that it punishes those schools and teachers who have children who are learning English as a second language and those with disabilities that affect their ability to learn with their typical peers. Fewer teachers are going to be willing to work in inner city schools that have the most children who are learning English as a second language. When I mention children who are learning English as a second language, I'm generally referring to children who were born in this country to immigrants who came here the legal way. It could also affect special education as there might be fewer teachers going into that field, and there could be fewer special needs children that are allowed to be integrated into regular classrooms.

Ordering anything other than a strawberry or vanilla cream-based frappachino at Starbucks, since they have frappachinos that have coffee in them. Get virgin drinks because they look like the real drink with alcohol. Also, if a restaurant has a bar inside, better to wait for a table outside of the bar because someone from church might see you and think you were having an alcoholic drink.

I like the Dixie Chicks version of Landslide, although I still love the original version. Another cover that I like has also been mentioned, Stone Temple Pilots Dancing Days (Led Zeppelin)

I'm pro-choice, but I do believe that the father should be able to offer his input in a decision like that, except in cases of rape or incest, as he's lost all rights when he committed that crime. When a mother's health is in danger from the pregnancy, especially if the embryo has implanted in the tube and she has other children who need both parents, then the father should definitely have a say. After all, if the pregnancy continued and the mother died, he'd be left raising those children without a mother. I know personally, I would only abort in the event of a rape, which would mean that I would have had a rape kit done at the hospital right away, or if there was a tubal pregnancy, or other life-threatening complication.

Pro-Life "except in cases of . . . "
ADoyle90815 replied to prisonchaplain's topic in General Discussion
I think that when it comes to the life of the mother, if she has children who need her already, then she might make the choice to have an abortion if continuing the pregnancy meant that her children would be left without a mother. In the case of incest, especially if the perpetrator is the father or brother of the victim, there's a greater chance of genetic disorders than found in the general population, especially if the family are all carriers of a particular nasty gene. -
I have a Mac at home, but I've got plenty of experience with PC's. One thing I do like about a Mac is that you don't have to worry about viruses as much.

Girl Scouts Of Amercia + Lds Church
ADoyle90815 replied to mountainrider's topic in General Discussion
I was a Girl Scout, and the thing I remember is that there was a lot of things about choosing a career path, but in the end, it's up to the individual to decide what to do with her life. If that meant that someone chooses to be a SAHM, that's perfectly fine. As far as I know, there's still the phrase of serving God and mankind in the Promise, even if troops aren't sponsored by churches. The majority of girls in my troop went to church as well as Scouts, and most of us quit when we were out of elementary school for various reasons, which was the norm in my area. My brother was a Cub Scout in a den that was sponsored at the public elementary school, but he didn't enjoy it so he was allowed to quit after it was obvious he didn't enjoy it. He preferred the YMCA's Indian Guides organization to Boy Scouts, so he stayed in that until he was out of high school. -
I took Spanish in high school, but I've forgotten a lot of it. Since I'm in southern California, it would probably be a good idea to learn more as so many people here speak it. If I could learn another language for the fun of it and to keep my brain healthy, it would probably be Latin.

Approaching Someone With Violent Tendancies

I also think it's a good idea to change the locks now that the roommate is gone. That's what a friend of mine had to do when faced with a similar situation. -
My reaction to that was Awesome! By that, I mean that it shows how powerful earthquakes can be, and is a reminder to be ready for when the southern section of the San Andreas fault goes. I see someone else posted a link.

I thought it was interesting that the bronze medal was given after that hockey game. I'm not normally a hockey fan, but I really enjoyed the gold medal game. I also like that Vancouver and the rest of Canada has the ability to laugh at themselves, something other areas can learn from. A sense of humor is a good thing, as laughter really is the best medicine.

One thing that disturbed me was seeing a mommy blog where there was a link to her 7 year old daughter's blog which was actually public. That's a bit like putting a billboard to pedophiles out there, in my opinion. It's one thing if a child has a blog, but it really should be made private, or only available for family to read at the very least. Another thing I've seen with blogs in general is that people have posted pictures where the number of their house is visible. That's a bad idea with Google Earth and Street View available now, as anyone could use that picture to find out where someone lives.

Why do so many other faiths seem to dislike LDS?
ADoyle90815 replied to Mute's topic in General Discussion
From what it looks like, that forum is a fundamentalist Christan site, where they bash anyone who isn't attending their particular church, even other Christians like the LDS and Catholic churches especially. They're the type of people who show up to protest at every General Conference. -

Why I'm Wary Of Facebook by JeaNette Goates Smith
ADoyle90815 replied to KeithLBrown's topic in General Discussion
That's true, the divorce rate had been going up long before the internet, nor has it really increased all that much since facebook started. People have found ways to commit adultery and other sins before the internet as well. Porn isn't a new problem either, it's been around since humans figured out how to do artwork. -
It's good that this person will get the help they need finally, but it's still a good idea to get that protective order if you haven't done so for when that person gets out of jail. I wouldn't worry about being sued, as those pictures would cause a judge to dismiss the lawsuit, or a jury to find in your favor.

Do Mormons celebrate Ash Wednesday?
ADoyle90815 replied to MichaelCraig's topic in General Discussion
It's not just a Catholic thing, as several churches observe Lent, as a way to spiritually prepare for Easter. I personally think it's a nice idea as it's a way to remember Christ's death on the cross, and resurrection. Like the LDS church, other Christians believe that Christ rose from the dead. Protestant churches have an empty cross to show that Christ isn't there anymore.
