  1. It also bears noting that he is Captain of the team.
  2. Gambling is one of the three "A's" that qualify for a divorce proceeding. A- For Addiction. He has an addiction, and no one should have to deal with that.
  3. OP. Because of your daughter's mental issues what I have to say may be irrelevant, but here goes: I always hated church, and was forced to go all my teenage years. Sundays were the worst days of the week for me. When I became a junior in high school, my mother go so frustrated with forcing me to go to seminary, that she said if I go voluntarily in my junior year, I wouldn't have to go as a senior, but, I had to figure my own way to get to school (seminary parents were my ride). I said OK, and when the time came I didn't go to seminary as a senior, and found other ways of getting to school. I actually hitch hiked home daily from school! At the end of the day, being forced to go to church worked, because I'm still going! I'll spare you the boring details of the decisions made to be here. I'm a believer in force as long as the kids are minors because house rules, just as in society at large has rules, is something we all have to deal with. It's part of growing up.
  4. 20 is way too young to get married IMHO.
  5. I'll stick up for PB a little bit. In my ward, as well as another nearby, people who don't wear white shirts don't administer the sacrament. Yes, there is a period at the end of that sentence. R So from a cultural point of view PB has a point. BTW I don't happen to own a white shirt. Got enough of it on my mission to last a lifetime.
  6. Of course you are correct. But the reality is that human endeavor is so complex that there are lots of corollaries and it is very hard to stay focussed on the big picture. Hence, auxiliary commandments such as the TEN etc etc. God has to simplify things to help us on our way.:)
  7. This is the problem trinitarianism was invented to solve. If the Christ is a "creature" (ie. created by) of the Father it logically follows that He is inferior. He's not, but trinitarianism appears to solve the conundrum. In Mormon belief we all have the possibility in sharing God's glory. I look at it as analogous to a business partnership. If I let my son (or anyone else) in as a partner, and give them a share that is equal to mine, and business doubles as a result, we are equal in that partnership in all respects. Have the same goals, business methods (beliefs) and share in the profits equally, etc etc. We are still different people.:) I think this is what is meant by receiving all things. And the more people God can admit to His partnership the better off He feels (gaining glory) because of the increasing success of the partnership.
  8. Without reading the whole thread, I can state that it is perfectly acceptable to do as you propose: ie. attend only sacrament meeting.:)
  9. Daniel Ch 2 31 “Your Majesty, in your vision you saw standing before you a giant statue, bright and shining, and terrifying to look at. 32 Its head was made of the finest gold; its chest and arms were made of silver; its waist and hips of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, and its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. 34 While you were looking at it, a great stone broke loose from a cliff without anyone touching it, struck the iron and clay feet of the statue, and shattered them. 35 At once the iron, clay, bronze, silver, and gold crumbled and became like the dust on a threshing place in summer. The wind carried it all away, leaving not a trace. But the stone grew to be a mountain that covered the whole earth. We must remember that not only the gospel will fill the whole earth, but the other kingdoms will be swept away. We have made a lot of progress: Since 1830, all the monarchies of Europe (the most powerful group of nations in the world) have fallen or are now constitutional. Communism is largely defunct, slavery has been abolished, at least officially, everywhere and Israel has a homeland. The major populations in the world where there is no significant LDS presence are China, India and the muslim countries. This is over 1/2 the population of the world and they are largely ignorant of Christ. We need to be patient. To get as far as we have in a little less than 200 years we have fought the American Civil War (the biggest war in history up to that time), WWI and WWII among the biggies. I too was surprised by the fall of the Iron Curtain, never thinking to see it in my lifetime. But God works in various ways. Economic liberalism, awesome communications, and a basic hunger for freedom are working in God's favor. Men are no longer ignorant of what goes on around their immediate area, and when they see how the West lives and the freedom we have, people want it. In China the USA is called the "golden mountain". There's a good reason for it.
  10. 1 Why not? 2 Why not? If you're that cheap you wouldn't have bought anything anyway. 3 Never done it. It's a girl thing. 4 Why not? When you gotta go you gotta go. 5 Mostly baloney. I don't do it, but I think it's mostly a Utah thing. 6 Oh Yeah...... 7 This is OK IMHO and everyone does it AFAIK on flights I've ever been on. A nonsense rule more obeyed in the breach. 8 Flat out stealing. 9 Kids should learn respect. 10 YMMV.
  11. It's not a scripture per se, but it's what Mormons believe. God the Father was once a man like ourselves.
  12. Define success: My most successful clients financially, are those whose business is also their vocation. They like what they do, be it running a restaurant or selling real estate. This type tends not to retire, kind of like Warren Buffett. Business success does not always mean that their family life is OK, although I've found no correlation between business success and a bad family life.:) In OPs example, a lot of very successful people started young. They get a taste for entrepreneurship and take it into adulthood. For many of them, even though they make a lot of $$$$, the money is not truly important except as a way to feel good about what they have accomplished.
  13. Yes, but by proxy. You will see Heavenly Father even if you never marry. You can still attain the Celestial Kingdom.:)
  14. I understand the GAs desire to see people marry and propagate for the good of the Church. For them the sooner the better, and when I was in Utah there seemed to be a great desire to marry as soon as possible. :) While this may be desireable in a Mormon culture like Utah, the more the church gets spread out, and frankly more like the "world' it would seem desireable to advocate marrying later. Because from a statistical standpoint later marraiges are better: less divorce and problems. But there are always Ensign articles saying in effect "don't delay!":o
  15. Hey if you want more of something---subsidie it!! Corollary is,if you want less: tax it.
  16. Anatess is of course correct in that the traditional view of liberalism is more individual rights. This has nothing to do with language barriers. Perhaps the traditional liberal view should be "anti monarchist". We don't have a lot of monarchies anymore and the meaning of liberal here in the US has been distorted by the "progessive" ie socialist movement.
  17. At 24 it's unlikely you are finished with school, have a career and a home to offer anyone. Traditionally, men married when they could afford to care for a wife and familly. If you are in this position, believe me women will find you. Until that time arrives (if it hasn't already), how seriously can a woman really take you? If you want to marry the ideal woman, be the ideal man.
  18. The fact that your wife was sexually active at age 15 is a big tip off that there are major problems psychologically. She needs counselling, and you will too. These types of problems are not easily overcome. Good luck.:)
  19. Zurie you are very young, and need to solve some of your own problems before you can honestly commit to a relationship to another. I'd give this guy a rest. Three months is not a long time and how well do you really know each other? I'm not sure the Holland speech is applicable, because you are taking drugs for depression. Again, you need to get your personal issues resolved before you should move on in life.
  20. One other thing should be noted in this discussion. Sometimes the parents of these young girls may have pushed them to be married to church "royalty". Reading between the lines on some of Joseph Smith's marraiges to teenagers was the idea that the families wanted this more than the young ladies. But the young women did consent. Not sure whether all those marraiges were consummated. FWIW Wendy Deng and Rupert Murdoch are getting a divorce.
  21. I have a Sub Zero with a Country French style wooden front: no fingerprints!!!!
  22. The Church is a publisher. Try this to start: Magazines
  23. It's the same. The Church is a social organization, and without a comfort level and social interaction most people will gravitate toward other people and activities that they perceive they have more in common with. Note the order in which the three things mentioned are in. That's not accidental.
  24. Absolutely! I never wear my garments when I do sports.
