  1. Just because something isn't common and is over-hyped and false stories are debunked, doesn't mean it hasn't happened or couldn't happen. Also notice, I wasn't talking about poisoned candy nor did I say it was common. http://www.snopes.com/horrors/mayhem/needles.asp (Randomly gathered quickly from a web search) http://www.fox8live.com/story/26602602/mother-terrified-after-needle-found-in-candy http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/news/local/community/holt/2014/11/04/police-investigate-needle-found-halloween-candy/18499647/
  2. There are cases of needles, razors, or drugs being put into candy to harm children, but overall it is not that common. There is no need for parents and people to freak out, it also doesn't take too long to sort through candy for anything suspicious. I had an elderly lady in the most serious of tones warn me about this, who probably trusts a little too much what she sees on the internet.
  3. My perspective is probably because I keep seeming to interact with religious people who contrary to their religious beliefs don't support Israel. Even if the pro-Palestinian narrative is the opposite, it's not what i've experienced. Overall it may not be the case, but at least in my limited perspective, it's what i've experienced.
  4. It might be easier to define orthodoxy first. One approach that one particular group that would likely be considered heterodox uses, for a baseline is the temple recommend questions. Or an alternative might be the Articles of Faith. Though the activity of defining orthodox versus not seems to be part of the problem that caused the Great Apostasy, which is why we as latter day saints should probably avoid going down the path of judgement of orthodoxy/heterodoxy too far.
  5. If we are going down this rabbit hole, is there a difference between cultural heterodoxy, and doctrinal heterodoxy? Because sometimes it seems like there is a little bit of both when talking about Latter Day Saints, especially the certain groups that claim to be LDS online, but don't seem to align with the majority in various different aspects. Some align better culturally, some doctrinally, some a little of either or depending on issue.
  6. Pretty sure you also have a very good reason to be carrying, and are exempted from the ban as well. oh just a little off topic... I'm surprised I'm not seeing a countdown from you this month for a particular day.
  7. Mine says something along similar lines, though different.
  8. The Jewish perspective for Israel seemed pretty straight forward. The Christian one i'm going to have to re-read, probably didn't help it was late at night and I was falling asleep xD Sometimes I think peoples opinions on Israel have less to do with their religious beliefs and more of their political. Which in some cases (where as a natural extension of what someone professes to believe they should support or not support Israel) goes to show a worrying trend of valuing political beliefs before belief of God.
  9. Our church is pretty Heterodox to begin with, not just compared to other christian churches, but also the range of belief that is allowed among the members. There are certainly limits to how heterodox people can be before not being in alignment with the Church, but overall I'm not so sure that statement holds up. If anyone here, who loves the church, has at any time complained about another member, or types of behavior that has irritated them, that seems like the same boat as "claims to love Mormonism but speaks contemptuously of Mormons." There are also plenty of anti-mormons who don't make the distinction between mormonism and mormons. While maybe not true for all of them, there are enough that that statement has it's own problems. (I could look for some quotes if need be, but I think i'd prefer to refrain.)
  10. These are pretty cool, I appreciated reading them! :-)
  11. Listen to what the sister missionaries are trying to teach you, and give it a try for awhile. Repent, fast and sincerely pray, explain the situation to God through prayer and tell him what you have told us here. You aren't alone in feeling that many members become highly emotional, and feeling odd about it. The Good News is that the promptings of the spirit don't have to be strong emotions. They can be though, and for many this is how they relate to the spirit, often described as a "burning in the bosom". Even more often you will hear it described as "a still small voice". Which might be a thought, or prompting. Or a feeling of peace. Each person is a little different and they may be lead in their own unique way. You may not realize it, but you have already shown interest in God. Why did you become interested in apologetic's and begin reading it? Why have you been approached by missionaries at this time? You even talked with them, and from your own description are listening and trying to approach God through prayer. Something seems to indeed be driving you towards him. I am not in need of my mother or father anymore, I can even live comfortably without them, and yet I find goodness in being with them and spending time together. Do you see any value in the way of life that is prescribed by Christ? Turning towards God because of that goodness is good enough reason itself. Sometimes we make small sacrifices of comfort for something greater. [i'd just like to add that it's pretty dang comfortable to lay in bed all day, but it's even better to get up and do things every once in awhile. Like eating xD ]
  12. There always was something, eternal. The abstract idea of nothingness, is literally empty, doesn't exist, something exists therefore at least as far as is observable a single thing of something in a sea of mostly nothing, makes nothingness not anything at all.

    Bummed...

Idk, if it's a good idea for me to state this, but Is OCD like preferences the only issue that would cause your mother to want this? It strikes me as more is going on beneath the surface. Or maybe not. :/ I'm sorry about this happening.
  14. What about turning the other cheek being a sign of non-violent resistance? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turning_the_other_cheek (Okay, i'm not really up to argue this ...just stirring the pot a little . Feel free to refute it though )
  15. Salutations Salutations Salutations! :-)
  16. Not that I celebrate communism, but they should put it in a museum. We learn through our history, it's important, sometimes all that is left is the scattered artifacts. [haven't read the article yet] [i've read it now] Oh cool, actually I find it incredible symbolic how the Lenin statue (Lenin, who likely has good intentions at heart at least,....at least compared to Stalin...) Transforms into Darth Vader. Much like Anakin turned to the Dark side of force. Good idea, I like it. LOTS. Should include a plaque stating what it was before, and maybe why they changed it too.
  17. I prayed for trials when I was in high school. I wouldn't recommend doing it, they will come, time from them may diminish the struggle, but such a trial they were. (excuse the mismatch grammar, proper grammar didn't seem to catch the intent. Though rephrasing might have.) Though I can say that it is through our trials that we go through the refiners fire. (Or at least one way that we can) I am thankful for all that I have learned and grown in ways I don't know if I would have known otherwise....can't say I was thankful for the trials though. Rather than ask for trials I suggest asking for his guidance for growth, and plenty of help to make sure you get through them trials!
  18. http://janariess.religionnews.com/2015/10/14/are-mormon-missionaries-being-denied-health-care-how-slate-dropped-the-ball/ Denied medical care is certainly not the norm. I'm not going to view the slate article, but from what i've heard others describe it as is basically a mishmash of antimormon complaints.
  19. Yeah...I don't like being called a sheep[le]. I'm a human not a sheep(le). I could also work on that pride issue I have
  20. May I be bold enough to state that I find quite often i'm one of those 'stupid people' If frequency matters, maybe less so than the general population at least.
  21. I agree, the "because I can" reasoning is a weak one, one with which many parents (no relation to political party) justify any decision they make to their children. I urge people to realize that "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree". As a child sees, learns, and grows so will it do one day.
  22. Vort explains this fairly comprehensively a few posts back, shortly after the one I made. To simplify: Pigment, or paint absorbs all colors but the one it reflects. When you mix paints it begins to absorb most all wavelengths of light, which our eye will perceive as dark or black.
  23. First of all, you are here on earth because you chose to follow God's plan here on earth. You are blessed to be here. Any ideas to the contrary is nonsense. Secondly, I like DevtheWind above, strongly encourage you to seek out medical aid. Your normal doctor can refer you to the proper places, and your bishop will also likely be able to help. If you have previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia, it is extremely important to remember to take your medication and not skip doses or stop taking the medication. Recontinue any medication on your normal schedule, or as directed by your doctor.
