  1. It's like me saying that in your posts I see a lack of concern for how preventable diseases are killing people. And invariably the discussion will be on how we need to teach people to wash their hands better, and others disagreeing saying we need to hand out face masks.
  2. Programs similar to what Regent Park, in downtown Toronto have had done. You would have to have a variation depending on where in the world you tried to implement educational programs. http://www.pathwaystoeducation.ca/ Discussion on the program can be read about here: http://freakonomics.com/2014/12/04/how-to-fix-a-broken-high-schooler-in-four-easy-steps-full-transcript/ (In theory I've been told this is similar to the Avid program, just with good funding) Research has been done on education showing it has a large impact on reducing poverty. Having a good teacher can make a huge difference, having no teacher, or no education will likewise have a large impact. The problem of poverty world wide most certainly needs a multi-tiered approach, including charity and handouts. A long term solution also needs development in access to clean food, water, housing, infrastructure, and education. ============================================================================================== The disagreement I see is where the charity/handouts etc should be organized from: individuals, government, organizations; who it should be coming from: the rich, the volunteer, the community etc; and whether it should be mandated or not, the ethics of a method (where in other threads much has been stated about freedom...(tax is theft, individual choice )versus security (the collective good, tax is not theft). Which is an entirely different discussion than how people think such a problem should be addressed, and whether they care that there is a problem or not. Which is also different than how earnings brackets among people are different and the ethics of it.(which I think is what you are most concerned about) Which as has been stated before, Is probably not the optimal method for finding a religion. Which you also need to keep in mind may not be as high a priority to some individuals than some other good cause such as disease, or stopping oppression, reduction of violence....and that not all people are equally at the same moral development level, which is in part is what our religion is about helping people develop (most religions try to teach a system of morals). We certainly aren't perfect. I don't exactly feel like quote mining the various threads that you have participated in to demonstrate the evidence of a perceived social injustice, but it can be done, if that is what it takes to convince you. I don't know if I can state it more simply than this.
  3. If you feel you personally need to accept the LinkedIn connection to move past the resentment then just do it.
  4. Have you also considered reading PoGP, and OT? ;P Kidding aside, I can't think of any books off the top of my head. Interesting topic though.
  5. hmm, I'll consider what you say, but this isn't quite how I understand it. I'm not quite convinced. It's basically similar ideas with a different understanding. I'll keep an eye out while reading scripture for enlightenment.
  6. Actually I don't think it really matters too much whether it is done organizationally, or individually. I do think that individual responsibility is given to the individual regardless of which method is used.
  7. Strawman of peoples positions, and False Dichotomy. This is not my perception. [tu quoque from me] The same argument could be stated towards your views since you have admitted that they would potentially benefit you. Ad hominem, particular peoples self interest (attacking the character, or stating it's prudence, supporting the character) doesn't make any argument of theirs or your's stronger nor weaker. Regardless this doesn't get the discussion anywhere. (when discussing social/political issues) Another Strawman, and False Dichotomy. The conclusions can't be substantiated based on a flawed/inductively weak argument. Even if I agreed with your reasoning: Composition/Division, what is true of individuals can't be equally assumed to apply to the whole. This is also a strawman, several have commented that there is a social injustice. It is also an appeal to emotion, since people will feel sorry for the poor which would reflect poorly on those you indicate are in support of the straw man "If you can't see the social injustice" Another False Dichotomy. To be fair everyone participates in these fallacies. This is why people are getting a bit frustrated.
  8. Seeing as gifts aren't my top language, for me personally other things speak closer to my heart. But when I get gifts from family I prefer 1 gift (that I would like) invested in than many many smaller ones.
  9. They way that I read this, is the planet over "even the night" would refer to the moon above the earth. So in terms of time, what is it that we are counting? Revolutions around the axis, revolutions around the earth? Sun? The effect of gravity on it's relative space time? (The effect on gravity from what, the sun? The earth? The galactic center? The place nearest unto God? Is the model based on current understanding of astronomy, or not? It is allegory instead? These things would make a difference to how I would understand the verse, but I don't think there are many answers. Looking forward to what others say.
  10. I feel for you, sounds quite frustrating. This is why so many companies are virtualizing. Clone the needed setup, and simply maintain your virtual infrastructure. (vmware ftw?)
  11. FYI I was just introduced to this lol Good timing
  12. Are you getting enough sunlight? Less direct sunlight means less Vitamin D. You could always try to take a vitamin D supplement, and a general multivitamin with vitamin B can sometimes help. Remember to take a break and some time for yourself to relax?
  13. I will strive not to destroy all humans... At least one particular one!

Um, yes, but the mechanisms of action aren't forthright and generally passive aggressive. Things such as social shunning, not extending callings or home teaching families, not being asked to give prayers or talks, gossip, snide comments etc. Maybe not always lots and lots and lots, but I've seen it happen to a few. I could go into examples of horror stories, but that would discount the majority of good people who don't do these things. It happens enough though to occasionally be a problem. Also, lets not drift too far from the threads intent? Your comments about who should and shouldn't go are still relavent, but could quickly spiral away.
  15. You will also find in Number 22:9-13 a man called Balaam, who speaks with God and is forbidden to curse the Israelites as they follow Moses. He wasn't an Israelite, and seems to be acting in a priestly, prophetic role.
  16. Something must be amiss in my ward...I don't think i've ever actually had Green Jello Or Funeral potatoes at a ward function
  17. There was at least one study done on the associations people of different ages prescribe to [a?] various type of music. One of the interesting findings is that often times the older generation interpret what is being said lyrical wise as being vastly different (completely opposite in some cases) than what the younger generation will interpret it as. The values of the older generation and younger generation actually aligned for the most part, but the generational lingo and world view caused communication misinterpretation.
  18. It's probably not North Korea doing the hacking. And even if it was, with the way modern hackers operate it would be very difficult to pin down exactly where they are operating from. Unless they were pretty clumsy in what they were doing, which would make a hack of this extent even less likely. Not to mention how the media and government like to use these events to polarize the public.

I've gotten that feeling from your past posts :)

Maybe terrified was a poor choice in words, unappealing might be better. Stemming from introversion more than anything else? They seem fine, no physical, mental, or social troubles. They aren't being forced or guilted as far as I can tell, and they would be older than the average missionary (so most of the ward members already seem to have given up trying to guilt them into doing it, which is a good thing imo).

How would you help someone become more excited to go on a mission, especially when it sounds more terrifying to a prospective missionary than exciting? How excited or sure that they should go on a mission, should they be before they go out? What about faith and belief? How much faith or belief should they have? Willing to say "I believe" but not "I know"? Let's assume for a moment, that they plan on going on a mission, and would willingly go regardless, but need to prepare a little before hand. This is not a hypothetical question, any advice? Edit:They have shown an interest in possibly going
  22. And now we know the real reason for inflation
  23. heh, like most kids, they are going to try and be nothing like their old, dusty, Parents. Probably like this LOL
  24. Ragtime existed far before the "40s", and back then it was scandalous lol. I'd propose rather than society getting more scandalous, it's simply disagreement with generational difference, regardless of what that change is.
  25. I like how older generations generally like to say the younger generation is a scandal. Don't even THINK about listening to that distasteful ragtime!!! Oh wait, I think I went a little too far back in history for my example! There are a lot of things they get right, and a few like most generations they struggle with. (Any discussion about millennials needs to have lots of pictures videos and memes )
