I'm judgemental of people who seem judgemental. I try... sometimes better than other times.

Last post (or not) Now back on topic....knitting....

I'm just happy that my thoughts on what traveler posted was "I'm not quite sure how I should respond to this" You stepped in and stopped me from looking foolish (Well maybe not so much now that i've outed myself ) I think I follow what he means. In short form, The premise (basic assumptions), logic (reasons), or conclusion of an argument can all have varying degrees of flaw or strength and depending on what people focus on changes how a discussion/argument progresses, whether any agreement or understanding can be found. Right? maybe?

The difference is on whether an activity can or would be distracting, within reason, to yourself and others. I think it largely depends on the individual. doodling to me wouldn't be, phone games certainly would be. Staring would be conductive to day dreaming, which would also be distracting. Same thing can go for notes, if you are so busy taking notes that it distracts from feeling the spirit...don't do it. Is reading scriptures in the middle of a meeting bad if it distracts you or others from the speaker? I don't think it's cut and dry yes or no. Generally as a rule of thumb, if someone can do this and respond in a thoughtful manner to the instructor during a meeting, I personally see no problem with it. (Yes there are potential exceptions to a rule of thumb...like sleeping)

Church makes statement regarding upcoming TLC show

This strikes me as a dangerous thread. A well balanced press release. -
How the manager went about firing. I've only just now read a couple of articles and such about it, but that much is obvious to me.
-
That got a good laugh out of me
-
Not to down play peoples struggles but I find that story amusing

Interesting, I wasn't aware of the kerfluffle. How things happened is absolutely appalling. For a moment while reading the article I was bracing for a conclusion I disagreed with, but it never came. I was pleasantly surprised to find agreement. Largely because it encourages 'facts' and a paradigm, with a healthy amount of critical thinking, while still relying on #1 A different approach might be taken for some students of philosophy who can't trust #1 let alone their own existence. [or maybe not]

Well when it melts away (or better yet is eaten) It's time to get more of course

You Sir are truly a diamond in the rough! (Or maybe the rough in the diamond if that's the type of art you are going for) Certainly a great Poet. ARGH. ;P

There is rhythm, but applied by what I'd consider good speech craft. And if poetry is defined as an art like most the arts now days by if they can evict an emotional response...well you have your answer. I contest emotional responses as the sole factor to good art, it is one potential indicator of good art among many others. (and some emotional responses are harder to obtain than others, should there be a differentiation between?)

It's interesting to see how many tech savy people are here.

I think I just may pick up some Sherber....Sorbet from the store today. This thread made me a bit hungry.

We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly. (Article of faith 1:8) That coupled with cross verifying doctrine with the Book of Mormon, and Revelation. And from what I recall historical writings within 100 years of an event are generally considered fairly reliable. A few documents fall into that time frame.

I think there are several causes that exhibit similar symptoms. From inflammation, genetics, micro seizures and possibly more from what i've read.

My family comparing my father and mother's sides of the family are like this, just not to as strong an extent as you describe. It's actually kind of interesting now that you've brought it up.

My response addressed where you stated "Second", and portions of the rest of what you stated. Exhorting others because you personally find them doing something to be distracting, when it would be helping them would be selfish. It would be disregarding the other person for your own personal gain. Is there limits and exceptions? Absolutely. Exhorting others because you see something as irreverent would be different. https://www.lds.org/topics/reverence?lang=engExhortation, has it's time and place, but considering that when most members exhort they are neither in authority to do so, and often cause contention with such. It would not be reverent nor more conductive to creating a reverent atmosphere. I'm in no position to judge whether exhortation is done properly, so these were just a few general thoughts on the subject.------------- The temple experience as a whole. I disagree with this assessment. :) [if you disagree with me on this we are just going to have to agree to disagree I guess.] I have already agreed that learning through the spirit is a more perfect way of learning. How ever I think the temple is a special house and place of learning, where there are things that will and can be revealed there that will not be else where. I will admit, that God can and will decide when and where to reveal revelation as he see's fit. And I don't think neglecting intellectual learning in either situation is what God has commanded either and as such they strengthen each other. Maybe your mileage varies from mine. I apply this to the whole temple experience. I state that it is a more perfect way of communicating in part because of the inclusion of multiple methods that people learn, We all don't learn the same and so the inclusion of multiple ways of learning make it more accessible to all people, a more perfect way a teaching. That doesn't mean it is a simpler way of communicating. Just because something communicates divine truths more perfectly doesn't mean it will be easier to understand. More perfect in how it is communicated, not in the difficulty to understand. You speak to a child differently than an adult. When describing something in simpler terms often the idea will not communicate in it's whole essence, But it may be easier to understand.

As I stated before using the temple and reverence isn't relevant to the topic of Sunday School lessons. Lets start with a premise that how and what you learn in the temple is a more perfect way of learning. Do you disagree? (Even if it takes more effort to do so) Temple learning, covenants and ritual revolves around 3* methods of communicating Auditory, Visual, and Kinesthetic. It likely wouldn't be necessary for people to knit, or do other obviously irreverent things, since it already takes into account the weakness of man to more perfectly communicate divine truths. A better comparison would be like knitting, when the teacher asks you to draw a simple picture of the plan of salvation say on the chalk board. In that case IT would be disrespectful an irreverent. I disagree with the fact that knitting or sketching is irreverent. I don't disagree that we are moved upon the the spirit to gain learning and understanding, which should be the focus. I disagree with the fact that preparing people physically according to their limitations would be unhelpful to conducting such a spirit. *(actually more, but i'm going to stick with a simple model of learning)

I agree. I am much more interested in the sounds and rhythms that go along with poetry than what I would consider illustrative prose which seems more common to the genre now days. When modern poetry is read, they apply a rhythm more similar to rap than using the natural rhythms and sounds like more traditional stuff (Shakespeare). At least that's what it seems like to me. Not to be misunderstood I can appreciate rap occasionally. (Just not the rap most people seem to like to listen to, and some rap is better than others of which I don't disagree with what Vort said above )

I'm glad things weren't taken poorly. I worry about that continually via text communication [Whew smiley face] :) I've found your posts about respect also worth consideration. And I appreciate this thread much like Folk Prophet.

No offense taken. Well... maybe a little, but not personally (If that makes any sense ) I agree with this completely. Though we still disagree on the topic heh. So there were some comments earlier about autism, and other conditions. I have family with autism and am informed on autism-spectrum disorders. You don't have to have a condition to learn Kinestheticly, though I remember reading a statistic that it is relatively low percentage of the population who are predominately Kinesthetic (5% ). Not that any of you are imply such things, just thought I would point it out. I can see what you are saying, I guess my response is among the lines... Can you see how it would be selfish to insist that people who would do better with knitting and such to not do so? I think it goes both ways a bit. Sorry if I was being a bit contentious.
