It is a silly what if because you're asking "what if the church stopped following God".

In my opinion, this is just a silly "what if". You can play that with any number of things. "What if" the Church announced there was no such thing as the Christ? "What if" martians inhabited Temple Square and declared themselves Prophets? "What if" MormonGator were the next Apostle? None of these scenarios is going to happen. Prophet, maybe.

I don't believe the absence of Satan would make this life any less challenging or that everyone would just be "automatically good and perfect".

Zil answered your question, but I'd like to add to it. If serving the Lord and exaltation aren't motivators for you, serving your family should be. I testify with absolute assuredness that being active in church isn't just good for you, it benefits your marriage and family. I absolutely believe, from personal experience as a convert, that you can't be the best husband and father you could be without being active in the church and setting that example for them. You also can't give your children all of what they need to stand and face a sinful world on their own.
