  1. Actually, yes --- however there are plenty of study guides available, and as others have said we go through a 4 year rotation on scrpture in the Gospel Doctrine class. Since you been going to the Gospel Principles class for about a year, you've probably been through the entire book. From what you have said about wanting to study scripture, I would say its time for you to go to Gospel Principles. This January we'll be starting a year long study of the New Testament. I'm sure whomever said you were in the wrong class was trying to helpful, there is no rule as to which class you must be in, but it is helpful to go through the Gospel Principles manual as it really does teach you our beliefs. God does expect scripture study to be a life long pursuit of all his children as it says in the BoM "Feast upon the words of Christ" (2 Nephi 32:3) We encourage all members to study scripture daily individually and as a family. Has anyone introduced you to the online Church catalog? You'll find study guides and a whole bunch more there. LDS Online Store - Welcome!_
  2. As far as buffet lines go, instead of having 1 long table with everything on it, have 3 or 4 tables. 1 for anything to do with starters: soups, salads, rolls, etc 1 for main dishes/meats 1 for desserts and don't have them all in 1 spot.
  3. Peope are sick of ham for a once a year event for a free meal? Come on -- too bad! I predict you'll have more complaints about Costco Ravoli.
  4. Which stories? Sweeping generalisms such as this are seldom correct for all or even most Mormons and Are you aware of how many things science gets wrong and later corrects?
  5. Something I didn't connect either for a long time If Joseph Smith was a Prophet (which you say you accept) then what he taught about the resurrection and about tithing is true.
  6. Yeah, but them people talk funny in Utah.
  7. Tithing Settlement Bishop >> "Hello Brother and Sister xxxx, thank you for coming in" Handing you the sheet with the amounts you tithed during the year. Bishop>> "Brother and Sister xxxx are you a full tithe payer?" Brother xxxx >> "Yes Bishop" (or "No Bishop") Bishop >> "Thank You Brother and Sister xxxx" followed by small talk or perhaps a discussion about (non-financial)Ward goals next year or perhaps about your callings. Over in just a few minutes.
  8. I have seen that once, the Bishop got up at the end of the talk, put his arm around the person, thanked them for the talk and then gently corrected the errors. It was really good.
  9. Businesses exist to make money, period. Appearantly no one thinks they can make money, and knowing a little something about real estate costs in CA I can understand that.
  10. Yeah, the name is Samuel. You sound just like the anti's who call Joseph Smith - Joe Just a thought, you have 3 posts here, not enough for people to know you, its time for your best behavior.
  11. I certainly don't want to see 99.99% of the TSA people in thongs and a halter top, they're not really hired for their looks.
  12. Come on Pam, I really am not looking to argue, I just want people to think: Are the current TSA procedures actually making you safer or just making you feel safer?
  13. Again I ask, who has flown planes into buildings? No not all Muslims are extremist, but if you are flying on the plane and worried about security, would you rather I get checked or the 20 something middle eastern person? Be honest now. Political correctness never saved anyones life. It can be a dangerous world, so lets start using some common sense and stop trying to make people feel good.
  14. The sad thing is that what they are doing is not making us any safer. checking every 10th or 20th person with no basis for it other than a random number coming up is purely dumb and has no basis in real security. It may make the masses feel good, but it won't stop anyone determined to bring something they shouldn't. I'm a 54 year old, pudgy, grey haired, white anglo saxon male - who was picked to go through the "special screening" last time I flew -- why? how did that make anyone safe? How about that young middle eastern fellow wearing traditional garb that walked right through before me? Sorry but how many pudgy 54 year olds have blown up planes compared to how many young middle eastern guys? Profiling works - ask Israel. Israel has not had plane downed, yet they don't do the stupid things we do. and no I am not a racist - I am a realist. I have nothing against Muslims or middle eastern people, but they are the only ones that have ever flown our planes into buildings. </rant>
  15. I always thought your were male.
  16. WHy should there be a problem? you're friends, you invited, they declined, why should that affect a friendship? The atheist should not take the invitation as a personal attack on their beliefs. The Mormon should take the rejection as a personal attack on their beliefs. Sounds like someone got upset when there was no reason to and it escalated.
  17. Wasn't talking about disbursements, was talking about routes and logistics -- like matching up a M.P. holder driver with a youth. That would require the YM Pres, EQ Pres, and HP group Leader and presumably the Bishop -- sounds like PEC to me.
  18. We have a house cleaner that comes in every 2 weeks. But then we don't have kids either.
  19. Why? its a Ward Council issue as of last Saturday
  20. We discussed this in the Bishopric meeting last Sunday -- really it would only need to be for things directly related to the Priesthood: ordinations, advancements, fast offerering, etc and really shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes once a month at most. I am pushing to get rid of the song and spiritual thought in Ward Council -- it wasn't modeled and there is nothing in the handbook about it.
  21. I have to agree with this, gambling the rent money repeatedly is out of control.
  22. To me there should not be a difference. I would ask your Stake President since he is the one that made the statement. My only thought as to what the difference could be, would be if it is your child are you helping to support it?
  23. The BoM doesn't have to speak to it, the D&C covers it quite nicely.
  24. No he used the 1769 edition of the KJV, which was itself updated from the 1611 version.
  25. Tithing amounts are always between the Lord and the Payer, but one thing to remember, it is possible to get help with groceries and basic living expenses from the Bishop if you can not meet your expenses. This is what Fast Offerings are used for. Also the Church has Employment Centers for those looking for jobs- (either out of work or looking to upgrade) that are offered free of charge, they can help with; resumes', interview training, job searches, etc. When you are struggling to make ends meet, you can either cut expenses or get more income -- sounds like you've already cut expenses, may be time to find a better paying job - the Employment Center can help you.
