Christians: tip 20%

I'm starting a new campaign--Christians tip their servers 20%. It's so disheartening to hear restaurant workers grimace anytime a religious convention is in town. Oh no, here they come--the Christians. They eat, they pick, they demand, then they live little or no tip--other than the cheesy tracts promoting their particular brand of faith.

So, what say ye? Who knows, maybe that server is an angel, you are entertaining unaware. I'd even suggest that if the server does not deserve, they may need it even more.

I rarely eat out these days. But when we do, we go 'big'. Not only do we tip 20%, but we order quite well too. The last time I was at Claim Jumper, I ordered a dinner plate during lunch hour. (They're around $20+/plate + a salad, compared to $9-$11 for lunch menu items.) My Dad and I order big and tip well... as long as the service is good.

We're not that hard to please... but if we're not happy, the manager learns how to teach the server a little better. :)

There are many ways to show gratitude. I personally think that money is one of the poorest means to say thank you. My father, always a good example to me, in restaurants he would sit and draw a ink portrait of his server - usually on 8 1/2 by 11 stock paper. At the end of his service he would show them their portrait and give his server a choice of a $100 tip or their portrait. I have never seen anyone take the $100. On occasion when I was with my father at one of his favorite restaurants I would catch the servers arguing over who would get to serve him. It was always fun to be with him because he was remembered by everyone - often when just walking down a street he would be treated as a celebrity with many people wanting to say hi and thanks about something.

PS. Just thought I would add that many times I have seen a server reduced to tears in receiving their portrait and try to hug my father - who was not a hugging person but he did enjoy thanks.

I have a little less sympathy for waiters/waitresses; mostly because I've been a busboy/dishwasher/food preparer and know from first-hand experience that there are other people in that restaurant working just as hard as the wait staff, for the same minimum wage and no tips at all. And even now, a waiter who handles ten tables in an hour and gets a $5 tip from each of them is making nearly twice as much per hour as I am--and, very probably, low-balling those figures to the IRS.

Unless I know the restaurant requires the servers to split their tips with the behind-the-counter staff, I generally don't tip above 15%--and that's if the service is spectacular.

I suppose different restaurants handle this in varying ways, but my understanding was that kitchen staff, cooks etc., make wages that are minimum and higher, while the servers get far less than minimum, and rely primarily on their tips. In some high-end restaurants servers actually pay the restaurant for their spot, and often have to give a cut of their tips as "payment" for venue the restaurant is providing, so they can ply their trade.

I have a little less sympathy for waiters/waitresses; mostly because I've been a busboy/dishwasher/food preparer and know from first-hand experience that there are other people in that restaurant working just as hard as the wait staff, for the same minimum wage and no tips at all.

I can't understand why I need to tip hair stylists and others who are paid for their work. Waitressing, I get--they get something like $2.00/hr so tips is how they make money. But hair stylists? Aren't they paid more along the lines of minimum wage or more?

Minimum wage is awfully low for a profession. Some stylists actually pay for their chair in a salon. I think tipping is pretty customary--especially for those doing service in such a personal way.

I hear this a lot, but I don't think it makes as much a difference as it may seem at first glance. A server making--say--$2.13/hour plus (speaking very conservatively) $30/hour in tips would clear well over $250 in an eight-hour shift, while his busboy, dishwasher, and/or kitchen staff makes less than $60 for that same period of time.

Circumstances will, of course, vary by restaurant; but as a general rule I just don't believe that servers work four times harder than the rest of the restaurant staff. Therefore, I'm not personally inclined to increase my tipping from 10-15% to 20-25% due to some "poor, underpaid waiters" line of argument.

If I could confront the disgusting messes that come back in the bus trays, stand over a steaming dishwasher, schlep piping hot dishes back out into the kitchen, intervene with whatever revolting catastrophe just occurred in the bathroom, and listen to the wait staff cuss me out about the empty glass freezer at $7.25/hour, then the wait staff can take orders, carry trays and pitchers, and schmooze with the customers for $32/hour. And as a customer I won't shed one. single. tear that the waiter only cleared $250 tonight instead of the $300-odd that he'd have cleared if we'd all just tipped 5% higher.

My view may be skewed by my humble eating habits. My wife worked for a couple of years as a waitress while going to school. Her venues were an ethnic restaurant (small) and Golden Corral. Those semi-buffet semi-service restaurants can be dicey, because some guests will assume that if there is any buffet service in the building, they have no obligation to tip. Roughly 1/3rd of her patrons left nothing, despite beverage service, and the fact that most tables had meat entrees served. Most shifts were 4-6 hours, and if she did not report tips, they would assume 8% of the meal tickets. She said most nights that was a wash, and she'd likely earn about $10 an hour.

Servers at mid-to-high end restaurants probably do make more per hour than the kitchen staff. BUT, many kitchen workers are full time, or at least have more choice. Servers know that their prime earning hours are going to be the fun hours--Friday and Saturday evenings. Those $30/hour wages do not hold true 40/hours a week, Monday through Friday, 9-5.

Frankly, I'd rather work in a jail--less stress.

Australians only tip for exceptional service. Our minimum wages are quite a bit higher then the US and it has just never been part of our culture.

But if I'm ever in the US I'll tip 20% service staff but to be honest the whole tipping system leaves me very confused.

The person I go to sets her own prices. But she still has to pay for the chair/sink/space rental in the salon. And she has to purchase all of the supplies that she uses on me. She still is reasonably priced compared to many others. So I don't mind tipping her at all. And with a small child she is supporting, minimum wage just doesn't cut it (no pun intended) if that is all she is making.

Huh. I occasionally roll in some fairly non-christian circles, but this is the first "they tip crappy" complaint I've heard.

Seriously? A tip-tract instead of a tip? That's an offense against basic human decency (in America and places that tip at least).

I'm a stingy 10+% tipper. I stinge, so we can afford the occasional critical-need case my wife comes across. My wife can spot someone having a hard day from a mile away. The other day she almost bought someone's loaded shopping cart because they had lost their wallet and had a house full of hungry teenagers and hubby was in another state.

I posted a similar string to this about 15 years ago. The difference is it was a local board in Springfield, MO. To my dismay, there was a hardline contingent that insisted tipping was optional, and only for exceptional service. Whatever wages employees got was strictly between them and their employer--not the guests. His contract was with the restaurant, and the prices were listed on the menu. I appealed to decency, morality, culture, expectations--all fell on deaf ears. Some folks are so right they're wrong.

Having managed and owned restaurants and done every job in restaurants. You're wrong.

A server is a very hard job AND you have to be pleasant to customers no matter what -- whens the last time you saw a pleasant dishwasher that was able to work with the public.

My easiest job was doing dishes - because you can do it on auto pilot, that can not be said for servers. Did you ever have to put up with a table of screaming kids whose parents tune them out? while handling your other 8 tables too, getting everything out on time and in proper order, correct the cooks mistakes before it gets to the table, make sure the used dishes get bussed (I rarely had bussers), get your tables ready for the next party and be pleasant all at the same time while you're on display to everyone that walks into the place.

The cooks do not make "mistakes". We make exactly what's written on the tag.

As for the rest: While acknowledging the subjectivity of such a measurement, I stand by my previous post--it is, perhaps, more work, but I disagree that it's four times as much work. I would have gladly traded with any of the wait staff (and offered, a couple of times). Not one of 'em took me up on the offer, which leads me to believe that they considered themselves more than fairly compensated even if they did get stiffed once in a while.
