We lost. Boo hoo.

Exciting game though. I thought it was going to be the usual story of nil-nil right through to the end of extra time, and then England losing on penalties.

I cheer for the USA against anyone except England. And Scotland, Ireland and Wales. And Australia and New Zealand. And possibly Canada.

Ugly truth: I often find myself cheering against US Olympic teams or other teams in international competition. Women's soccer comes to mind. Get some team of true excellence, e.g. the original US basketball "Dream Team", and I'll cheer wholeheartedly for them. But I don't support egomaniacal, politically correct virtue-signallers no matter what flag they fly (or openly disgrace) when they play.

I find watching a bunch of individuals running up and down a field to be rather boring.   I prefer sports of more accomplishment (scoring).   I believe football “socker” would be a lot more interesting and fun to watch with one simple rule change – take away the offsides rule.

I also think a goal should be 3 points and a one-point score for a kick above the goal (similar to a field goal in American football).

It's "soccer" - from "association football".

What???? And take away hours of enjoyable arguing about what was or wasn't "offside" - and whether or not the ref was an idiot???

Oh, I dunno.  First, there are the fancy knee-high socks.  And then there are all the screams and whines when someone gets kicked in the socks, er, shins.  And then there's the fighting where everyone, fans included, is socking each other....

Since terms in the UK often differ in pronunciation and meaning in the USA – I intended to draw a distinction between the normal use of football and socker here and make sure there is no confusion.

Heaven forbid.  If anyone wants to spend hours of enjoyable arguing – that can be done regardless of whatever rules.   My intent was to make the game more offensively fun and strategically more complex offensively rather than defensively.    I personally prefer watching people succeed over watching those that are experts in defense and intent on keeping others from succeeding.

Greef – I do not know what I would dislike more – the game of soccer or the fans?

I know what you meant Traveler - I'm joking. There is nothing more "stereotypically soccer" than a big argument about offside. Kids boo-hooing because the other side was allegedly "offside" and the ref allowed the goal, and the harassed ref telling them to "stop crying and get on with the game".

Or the men getting frustrated trying to explain to women the meaning of "offside", and the women resolutely not understanding.

No worries.  I knew you were joking.  Sometimes even my logic is sarcastic.   However, I would be careful, if I were you, in trying to bring women into a confusing topic.  But then learning is a good thing.

BTW – thanks for the fun of this thread and the differences between the UK and USA.

I think the closest American equivalent might be the infield fly rule.

Haha...I remember those ads! The Indian fella at my local store was totally confused by the "Not for Girls" on the Yorkie label. He could not understand when I told him it was "a joke" and kept asking me why it was funny.

That was twenty years ago. Ten years ago it would have been condemned by feminists. Today feminists are out, and it's the trans rights people you need to be careful of. Where will we go next?
