Under the banner of heaven, Sins of our mother and now (drumroll) we have "The secret lives of Mormon wives".
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives | Official Trailer | Hulu - YouTube

An uninspiring shows which from the trailer appears to make a mockery of our faith by detailing the ins and outs of some inane sex scandal.

The come follow me reading for this week made me ponder why such people claiming to be members of Church lead such wicked lives - which in turn cause huge media success. Behold - Alma 46

Quote

8 Thus we see how quick the children of men do forget the Lord their God, yea, how quick to do iniquity, and to be led away by the evil one.

9 Yea, and we also see the great wickedness one very wicked man can cause to take place among the children of men.

Evil men can yield great influence, such evil men are especially dangerous when they mask themselves as one of the Church of God. As satan continues to grow in influence I believe more men in the vein will rise, and more shows will be made in a continuing effort to make "Mormons" look mad.

Stay strong in these last days.

I think about all the decades of bad movies and shows featuring the drunken Catholic priest, or the shadowy Catholic illuminati conspiracy, or the evil nuns summoning devils in between beating the young women in their care.   I suppose the never-ending flood of sensational stupid shows about us LDS folks, means we've finally made it to the prime time big leagues.  Might as well embrace such things and always be ready to engage with laughter and good humor, when someone wants to talk to us about it.

“Every time you kick ‘Mormonism’ you kick it upstairs; you never kick it downstairs. The Lord Almighty so orders it.”  Brigham Young said it, we might as well do our part to ensure it's true.

I believe this kind of thing will tend to help missionary efforts.

In today's society, "soliciting" is banned nearly everywhere.  And talking about religion at work is considered "inappropriate" or "impolite."  Some people have been reported to HR over such things.

But when I've "slipped in" casual conversation things like "my son is on a mission for our church" etc. people know I'm LDS.

Then when people see stuff like this, THEY come to ME and ask about it.  Then I just say, "Yeah, I heard about that show.  That is jacked up."

Thing is, we've been mocked in popular media since the 1800s. It's not so much "we've finally made it" as it is "we're one of the few groups that left and right alike feel comfortable in bashing".

I haven't heard of this show.

That looks like the Provo Temple in the Background.  What is the show about though.  Polygamous marriages aren't allowed in the Temple or within our Church....

Is it just about normal LDS women?

No.

Reality shows (and I love Big Brothers, an OG of reality shows) try to find the most drama filled contestants they can find.

Besides, most “normal” people are too busy working, raising kids, etc to dedicate 80 hours a week in filming to a reality show.

To be fair, Jewish people say that too-and due to recent events it has far more credibility.  Virtually every religion and race can play the persecuted victim card. We hate to hear others play it, but we except sympathy when we play it.

I bet it has huge viewership.

Tik Tok influencers, pretty girls and handsome young men, $$, Sex, Drama, Reality TV, Swingers, Taboo, conflict.

Who doesn’t stop to watch a train wreck?

I’m glad they are using the moniker Mormon instead of LDS.

Sensationalist nonsense.

Once the novelty washes away people will just go back to bashing Catholic priests.

On a semi-unrelated note, the show midnight mass (a mini horror series about a catholic priest) was one of the best series I think I've seen in recent memory, highly recommend.

Watched part of the first episode yesterday.

meh.

Its a tell all, not a reality show.

I prefer to watch the train wreck in real time.

The plastic surgery is out of control.  I can’t imagine that men like this look.  They must be doing the botox, lifts, and lips fillers because the group is encouraging them to do so, feelings of inadequacy, or pervasive disturbance of body image.

I totally support free will.  Do your thing girl.  But when you start encouraging others to break their covenants, that’s apostasy.  Which I find abhorrent.

Like you said, it’s a free country, but I also find it disgusting.

Just based on the title of the thread and watching the trailer for it:

The way I see it is: a bunch of women rebel against the church and its teachings and the consequence is that their lives are all ruined.

Doesn't seem "designed to give the church a bad name", per se, even though the women are bad talking the church in the start of the trailer. But the consequence of their views and attitudes doesn't seem to be joy and peace.

Not that I'm going to watch it. I have no interest in that sort of stuff. But I just thought while watching the trailer that it's a pretty primo example of what I see happen when people abandon the church and it's teachings. I've seen it directly with family and friends. They have good, wholesome lives, but complain about the church's restrictions and teachings, then determine they'll be happier if they leave, then within a few years...drinking, drugs, divorce, destruction, misery, pain and ruin.

Which seems to be what happens here. Yep. Sounds about right.

Granted, I don't know how the show will wrap up. In the end they will likely try to spin it like it was all for the good and they're all better off for their rebellion. Probably.

Um... breaking covenants is apostasy whether one encourages others to do so or not. Granted, encouraging others to do so makes it all worse. But still...the implication that if you just quietly go off and "do your thing" in rebellion against God that you're not in apostasy doesn't quite work.

My wife watched the first episode when she was away on a business trip.  She made the excellent point that no one would believe it’s real unless they have an ax to grind against the church.

Even though I think the television show is forgettable and relatively harmless, I feel sorry for the active LDS who might be tarnished by people comparing these women to them.

Having said that, anyone stupid enough to think that mainstream LDS act like the celebs on this show probably should just be ignored or placated.
