  1. We're making some family decisions and possibly changes. I'm heavily involved in the school district and currently involved in a contentious school board battle. The side pushing for social education is louder and shouting out those that are concerned with academics. I'm unsure if this is due to social learning being the main concern of the majority, or if families who are focused on academics just stay in the shadows to avoid the very vocal and contentious debates.

  2. What is it officially? Who knows. What did I mean in my usage? Focus on social issues, particularly gender, systemic racism, culture, etc.

  3. Not necessarily but I will defer to others who might know more. First of all, Lehi's sons married Ishmael's daughters who were of Ephraim, but I don't know if the father's tribe always dictated tribal lineage. Also there are instances now days where a person's tribal designation is different than both parents, presumably because somewhere back in time there where other tribes present in that person's ancestry. It's possible the same could be true with Lehi's family. Then of course there is the argument that tribal designation could be assigned based on one's responsibilities in life rather than inherited.

  4. I think the high focus on social education is truly a sign of breakdown of family and community and hopes of putting all this on someone else. I'll be frank: I've even seen this from conservative families, just not focused on the more "woke" stuff. They're simply under the impression they don't have to handle this and that and their taxes will handle it. It leads to a huge argument of what's okay and what's not and further breakdown

  5. There are several elements in answering this, including the fact that the star was a sign in heaven, apparently a normal "star" that rose and set just like any other star, and that the star must have been to the west (not the east) of the wise men, who as you note were themselves in the East. (That was where they were when they saw the star—in the East.) What the part about the star going before them and standing over Jesus' house means, I have no idea. But in any case, the most relevant part would be that this would have taken place well after Jesus' birth, probably when he was at least a year or two old. By the time the wise men met Jesus, the sign to the Nephites was long past, a fairly recent historical event rather than a current concern.

  6. In Apr 2006 conference Elder Robert D. Hales recounted something President Spencer W. Kimball once told him. “It has always troubled me what the adversary does using the name of our Savior.” He then said, “Robert, the adversary can never have joy unless you and I would sin.” People like this woman are disgusting. She is a bold-faced liar, and trying to do the exact opposite of what she claims this bill does - inject government into these choices. The real meaning of that verse shows the real sanctity of life. This is all about control, and giving evil more of it. Their desires for death, influence, and power will continue to progress. Shame on her and any who blindly follow such twisted ideals. Before the Lord comes again we will all have to choose. Lines will continue to be drawn between good and evil, and one will not be able to remain sitting on the fence.

  7. This question shows that you do not understand the ancient Biblical (and other) meaning of "first born" or "birthright". In all cases when two brothers contended for the birthright it was maintained by the younger of the two - not even once to the oldest. Anciently first born was the most nobel or best - kind of like first class travel. When Isaiah was talking with King Ahaz - Isaiah stressed that loyality to G-d was required of those that serves G-d - not just be be apointed but also to maintain one position before G-d. 8. In addition, I would emphasize that we are called to serve a mission and are assigned our field of service. That assignment might be based on aptitude, nationality, language skills, seminary graduation status, and so forth. But the calling remains the same: To teach the gospel of Jesus Christ. I believe we would do well as a people not to get caught up in the location or initial assignment of where our missionary service will take place, and instead focus on the calling itself and how well we may or may not be prepared to fulfill that calling.

  9. I don't think I can comment on this topic without being rude. So if everyone can just imagine what I said, that we got into a huge argument, and then finally I apologized for coming across rudely and walked away, I'd appreciate it. Seriously though....these sorts of discussions have me gnashing my teeth with frustration! Argh!
