Hmm..seems odd to say you can't reply in your own thread...maybe it's an obscure, obsolete rule, lol. I hope your daughter feels better soon, and welcome to the site! :) -
Does anyone else cry at the end of the Results Shows each week? AI is bad for my emotional health, all those kids weeping and the parents perched above waiting to take away the latest victims...

LOL Wanderer..I don't wear my undies on my head :)

LOL PC...I can't argue with you on that one!! I must admit that I didn't look on the website listed, to see how their articles regarding the LDS church were worded. I used the word misunderstood, because I was assuming that some of their comments may have been that way regarding LDS doctrine. Of course it would be beneficial to both groups to meet and discuss their differences in a neutral manner. (Time for PC to promote that LDS meets Evangelist book he likes, lol )

LOL Wanderer!!! My mind is definitely diseased...I have the meds to prove it!!! :)

As a former Roman Catholic I am saddened to see this blatant ploy to make money and spread possibly misunderstood information about the Mormon religion/people. If I was a Catholic now, I would like to see a copy of what I was sending for before laying out any cash, so that I could try to see if it was a balanced document or not. I've noticed similarities between the RC church and the LDS church too, which made my transition from Catholicism to Mormonism easier. I'm just saddened that different religious groups can't take the time to find out the real facts about others' religions before dissing them in any way...

Hi Sister M. Thanks for sharing your concerns with us all here at the board. I look forward to hearing from you again on Monday, and hope that you have a more enjoyable weekend too, in the meantime :) -

Thank You Cgrantreed, that really was a useful post for my situation. The reason I mentioned about my caution on arranging a meeting with the Bishop was because my Home Teacher said that if I had any sort of problems at all, the Home Teachers should be my 1st port of call, and that I should only call on the Bishop if the HT (or other relevant person I assume, depending on the circumstances) could not deal with my enquiry so that I felt satisfied with the advice I was given. I'm not trying to get out of tithing completely, I just was afraid after reading in another thread about the way the Govt. would respond if they found I was donating 10% of my total Soc.Security benefits to the church..I wouldn't like to have my benefits reduced because of this. Your advice regarding using 10% of any increase from my soc.security, after paying necessary bills/shopping needs etc. is really helpful to me, I would gladly try to budget so that I'm using my benefit money wisely and tithe off any spare cash I have after budgeting. Thank you again :)

Since I was baptised last weekend, the issue of Tithing has been at the forefront of my mind. I asked the Missionaries (the Elders from abroad and the local Ward Missionaries) about my situation of being on Income Support, and whether or not I would be eligible for a Temple Recommend if I didn't pay a full Tithe on my income, and I also asked my Home Teachers about it, they all gave vague replies that it wasn't forced, however any income received into the family was an increase on nothing, and therefore a full tithe ought to be paid on it...I mentioned that it had been suggested to me that I should ask the Bishop about it, but nobody seemed to want to tell me to try that or not..I just got an overwhelming feeling from them all that I ought to class my benefit money as a normal income and therefore decide for myself whether or not to pay a full tithe...I do get the feeling that if I waited till the 1st Tithing Settlement meeting before seeking advice from the Bishop, I might find myself being refused a Temple Recommend if I didn't pay tithes for the next 12 months or so...It's difficult for me to decide whether or not to ask for a meeting with the Bishop about the issue because of people telling me that the Bishop should only be consulted when all other options have failed to deal with your inquiries... Please, anybody who's been a Bishop or is one now, what have you told your members if they've asked you about a situation like mine?

Checker, I'm sorry to have got carried away on the grammar, I was just hoping to clarify what Elphie had originally meant in her post regarding the use of capitals when referring to the state of Utah. My example of somebody using the word then instead of than is one that I think has been used in this forum, I may be mistaken, it could have been another just as common word that was written/spelt incorrectly due to pronunciation. As an example, somebody would have written on this forum..'sooner rather then later' instead of 'sooner rather than later', just as somebody said in this thread that they used a word in that 'since' instead of saying they used a word in that 'sense', just one little letter changes the whole word, though nobody usually comments upon it cos everyone knows what the poster meant to say. You asked for a pet peeve, and I suppose this is one of those things that I note happening on a regular basis on this forum, but I wouldn't point it out whenever somebody does it as that would be rude...hope that suffices for this thread. :)

Elphie, I think the example Willow mentioned about stating 'The Bible says..' is correct in itself, if we view the Bible as a current document..a living document so to speak, not to be taken as just in the past, but to be ongoing now..however when referring to that which one person in the Bible stated, the correct thing to say is 'Jesus said..' The_Jason..Elphie was saying that when someone refers to the state of Utah, they should not capitalise the word state but people often do as in..the State of Utah... One thing I've noticed on here, in this thread even, is people replacing one letter of words such as writing since when they meant sense, and then when they meant than. Maybe those mistakes happen as a result of pronunciations of said words in different countries/states?

Congrats on reaching 1000 posts The_Jason!! :)

I'm trying to get myself to follow all the scriptures by reading the Gospel Principles and Preach My Gospel manuals...I must admit that I'm having trouble getting started properly, but my intentions are good, lol :) Edited to add: I know you can follow the Gospel Principles manual online via The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and you may find Preach My Gospel there too.. -
Hi Pammy, welcome to the site..I've just recently started attending the LDS church again after a 26 years break from it (I wasn't Baptised when I used to attend). I was Baptised on Saturday and am enjoying learning all about the religion again and meeting lots of new friends..the hugs and welcomes can be a little mind blowing to begin with, but lots of people agree that 'the Mormons' are really nice people! :)

pushka replied to Heckya's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
About 3 weeks ago, in RS, we were encouraged to read Chapter 5 of the manual Preach My Gospel, which includes a list of questions similar to the one above, not as many questions listed tho, as you're encouraged to find your own questions and answers to them within the BOM. I've found that trying to get thru the chapters of Preach My Gospel and Gospel Principles with the scriptures beside me is a useful way to study. -
That's a lovely idea Carolep. :)
